Would anybody be interested in sharing my free Linveo AMD Ryzen 9 9950X NetBSD VPS in Arizona? It's open to friends who want to help me learn.

• Goals

Tonight I decided to (1) try some method of rolling release updates of NetBSD pkgsrc. For example, please see pkg_rolling-replace (mailing list, 2008 introduction), please see also the man page. I could use help figuring out the best method of rolling updates with pkgsrc.

Also, I think it might be fun to (2) see whether I can get 9vx working. I could use help with the code and the compiling on 64 bit NetBSD of the vx32 sandboxing library used by 9vx.

Maybe I could (3) try the X Windows installation from pkgsrc instead of the xsrc version, but I haven't looked into pkgsrc X, very much as yet.

• Procedure

I'm beginning by wiping and reinstalling my NetBSD-current VPS at Linveo. The reinstall is from Linveo vmcontrol, which offers @cmeerw's NetBSD 10.1 image.

The process is installing NetBSD 10.1, then, with changes appropriate for 10.1, following the simple NetBSD 10 to NetBSD-current steps in Quick Recipe For Self-Compiled NetBSD-current On A Linveo VPS.

Whilst we certainly made an impression with those large-capacity KVM storage plan, that's not really what we're all about. We've been providing virtualised servers for a long time now but mostly only on a one-to-one basis with our clients (we've been doing software dev for the last 15+ years). We really don't know if we can continue selling VPSes on at least a new dedicated server (other than the two that serve this offer) at this price, in the near future. We're building a new server (Delta.2), for the Delta server series - and DDR4 RAM and disk costs have more than doubled since the last time we've built Delta.1, which was last year.

We're doing some adjustments and we're really attempting hard not to increase the package pricing to existing or new users by leveraging other categories to compensate (e.g. we'll introduce Managed VPS services and Managed Web Hosting this weekend), for example, but... it all depends on how successful it is. Project updates

• Lots of bugs are coming to the surface now that the user numbers are going up, we have gone past 2000 active users now on our way to 2500, so the last 10 days or so has been spent realising mistakes were made and fixing said mistakes, every day has been a new drama to be honest.

• IPv6, I got greedy, ambitious, and pushed this a bit to hard, we were not really ready for it, its now about 7 days overdue, I suspect we will be lucky to have it in place by the end of the month, but it is coming, maybe not in its final form, but so many people keep asking about it, we will do it, even if that means calling it a future legacy system I will publish numbers on Ipv6 use when it's in, if the loud 1% has changed much from last time I was in this game (only 4 years ago) I will hat my eat.

• The minimal alpine and debian (any day now) articles you have seen from me recently were not just for fun, we have come to the conclusion that the official distro images which is what we use now are a blaoted mess, so we will probably still use them but make more effort up front and run them through a template stripper first, work in progress.

• Real-world non-requested or hinted reviews have started appearing in the wild, which makes us very happy

• We spoke again about the idea of running free.tierhive.com with a tiny set of minimal templates, maybe a bsd variant, alpine and debian only with a lot of the fluff cut out, a single resource level, maybe 128/256mb 3gb disk and 10 mbit, instead of getting a /24 users would get a /29 we would be inviting sponsored nodes into that, a node can be a VPS, and the location details will be your host name or whatever you want it to be, dont worry they would be pretty spam, torrent, tor, portscan. mining proof as standard. Would love to hear some thoughts on this.

MAJOR UPDATE

We essentially replaced the NAT logic in the back end after many complaints about only getting 1 extra port, now all VPSs are provisioned with ONLY 1 port for SSH (you get the matching UDP port anyway) then you can self-allocate up to 3 more ports, and you can set which internal port it forwards too.

This also means those who never needed or want the extra port forwarding to their VPS can remove it, you can add and remove ports at will now. Currently, we have set it to 4 ports (1 for ssh + 3 extra). Depending on use over the next month or so, we may hike that up to 5 or 10, we will see.

We are currently working on finally rolling out the HAProxy stats for end users, few little bits of fine-tuning to do still on that.

We may have also come up with a way to add IPv6 in a way that won't hurt the final IPv6 plan for TierHive, so IPv6 may be coming in Alpha sooner rather than later. I have some research to do on NS Delegation for end users who might want to manage their own zone/PTR

We figured out how to get a bit more speed networking-wise for end users with more efficient limiting, rule sets and dynamic balancing, which has been well recieved, there were some complaints from the nodeseek people early on about this (Anyone that uses nodeseek please let people know, I will very much appreciate that)

We are still looking to add Singapore as the next location once the stars align. I thought it would have been ready by now, but we had to back out while we focused on other, more important things with the NAT system, we realised we boxed ourselves in with that so we wanted to fix it before going any further.

Most other changes have been admin or hypervisor side to make our lives easier.

One of which is our own abuse monitoring system that checks for torrent, tor, mining, spam, port scanning abuse in real time, which we are looking to release as a separate product, it currently supports email, or webhook alerts (slack, zulip etc)
