Hi,

I got a cheap storages boxes like 1TB NAT for 10$/y and I had to put it into use.
However not fully trusting them with raw vm images, so PGP will do.

The backups are pgp encrypted before they are getting pulled by the storage server.
The proxmox host has never any access to the backup server and the backup server never has any access to the vm images since they are encrypted.

Whatever gets compromised, your should still be safe, that's the idea.
Downside is obviously, disk usage, for every backup we do in Proxmox, we have to do another encrypted copy and wait for the backup server to pull it before we can clear the disk space.

This can easily be done by using the Proxmox hooks, so you can configure your backup schedule like you normaly would do, only the STOREID has to match.
The only thing you have to tweak is, the backup server when it has to pull the backups.

1. Install the hook.

I do daily/weekly offside backups and keep them for 4 weeks.
Example for weekly, script can be modded though.

https://pastebin.com/raw/31jMWKTz
Wouldn't format properly...

Put the script to /usr/local/bin/vzdump-hook.sh and make it executable.
Don't forget to create the user "weekly" and the folder structure (/mnt/weekly/dump/ or whatever folder you want to use)
You also should install and ssh key for the backup server to be able to login into the user "weekly".

In my case, Proxmox creates usuable backups to /mnt/weekly/dump and the encrypted ones are put to /home/weekly/backups for pulling.

2. Edit /etc/vzdump.conf

Replace

#script: FILENAME

with

script: /usr/local/bin/vzdump-hook.sh

3. Either generate or import a existing pgp key

gpg --gen-key

or

gpg --import mahkey

Make SURE you backup this key.

4. Make a test backup and check if the encrypted backup is there.
There should be zero errors in the proxmox backup log.

If you do, you might have to trust that pgp key.

gpg --edit-key mahkey

and type "trust"

5. Setup a cronjob on the remote storage server

5 5 * * * /home/weekly/backups.sh

You might have to adjust the time.
rsync will do.

#!/bin/bash
set -e
if pgrep -fl backup.sh &>/dev/null; then
        rsync -Pav -e "ssh -i weekly" weekly@mahserverip:/home/weekly/backups/* /home/weekly/backups/
        find /home/weekly/backups/* -mtime +30 -exec rm {} +
fi

Don't forgot to make it executable and do a testrun.

6. Profit.

Thanks for reading my TED TALK.

I couldn't find a built-in option to create regular (daily) backups of my DirectAdmin shared hosting account (regular user, no admin/reseller) and upload them to a remote server using SFTP (for example).

There's something in the docs here but that method seems to be unavailable for regular users: https://docs.directadmin.com/directadmin/backup-restore-migration/backup-to-remote.html

Am I missing something?

Otherwise, my idea is to try to create a script which triggers a manual backup over the DirectAdmin API, waits for a while and then downloads the backup. But maybe anyone already has such script and would be willing to share it?

About Us

We've had offers going all the way back to 2012 under our previous brand. We have rebranded into Layer (a registered company in Dubai, with trade license number 900809, and real offices) 3 years ago, and have been working really hard in Dubai with local businesses - where we are offering all in one service contracts for social media management, infrastructure management, web design services, hosting, and more. With a major focus on B2B.

We currently host our customers out of Dubai, Germany, New York, and we have just expanded into Spokane, WA!

This expansion will help us improve our service offerings, and provide additional services to the wider public, by shifting from our traditional B2B approach to B2B as well as B2C. Services for all!

And yes, we still do have many happy clients with active services from even before Layer! So, let's get to the offers!

Why Layer?

A real registered LLC in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with an office and employees

Operating as Layer for 3 years now with many happy clients

Premium Hardware & Support

FREE Backups Included

Free DDOS Protection Included

F.A.Q

Q. What is allowed? What isn't?
A. TLDR; All legal services are welcome at Layer. We do NOT allow adult content, spam, phishing, hacking, DDoS, public proxies, mining, port scanning, TOR, IRC, and public tracker torrents on our network.

Q. What kind of support is provided?
A. Our products and services are completely unmanaged. Support will be limited to network and access related queries.

Q. Are these services activated immediately?
A. If this is your first order with us, the order will require passing our fraud checks. If you already have an active service with us, your new order will be provisioned automatically.

Q. Some IPs are geolocated to Dubai? What is this all about?!
A. We are waiting for some geo IP DB service providers to update the information on their side. You can verify your service location by a trace route if required.

Q. Do you limit any ports? Is mailing allowed?
A. By default port 25 is blocked. We can make exceptions if necessary.

Q. My order was rejected! Help!
A. The only time we will reject your order is when/if you used fake information or a VPN. Make sure all the details are correct, and you are using an IP matching your signup details. If you are still facing issues, please contact us.

Q. Are the resources dedicated to me?
A. No, they are provided to you on a fair share concept.

Q. Can you help me upload an ISO?
A. Certainly! Please open a ticket and provide us with the details.

Q. Are Windows Servers allowed?
A. Currently, we do not support Windows on our platform.

Q. Can I set my own rDNS?
A. Yes, rDNS can be set automatically in our VirtFusion control panel.

Q. Can you announce my IPs?
A. Certainly! Please open a ticket and provide us with the details.

Q. Your website lists services for social media management, creative content, photography, and web design. Are you a hosting provider or a creative agency?
A. Long gone are the days where you focus on one service, especially when our customers are expecting us to manage their social media, create their websites, manage the servers and infrastructure, and so on. This is why, we, as Layer decided to provide all our services publicly on our website for both our B2B and our B2C customers.

Q. My question is not listed here .. what can I do?
A. Please contact us.

Hi,

Are there any cheap alternatives to IDrive?

I have been using IDrive Backup for years. It's really cheap with 10TB for $5 if you create a new account every year.
I have added IDrive e2 within the last year for two separate offsite locations, and it's coming up for renewal soon. I expect I will also be able to get 1TB for $4 again if I sign up for a new account under a different email.

I mainly backup from a Synology NAS so Degoo and Prism etc. will not be an option.

Hi all, I am looking for a good storage VPS for personal backups. I am mainly interested in storage VPSes, but if a regular backup provider would work, I am open to those. So far, the best offer that I've found is the Lobster Unlimited Expanding Storage Plan from Servarica, which is $10/month for 2 TB plus 3 GB/day (= 1 TB/year). I also found Jottacloud, but their upload speeds are quite slow from here (US east coast). Any of the other backup providers that I've found either don't support backing up data stored on a NAS or don't support encryption/rclone.

I am looking for offers around $10/month but can go a little bit higher if necessary. Currently I am estimating my backup size at 1.8 TB, so I would prefer 3 TB+ unless the storage is increased periodically like the Servarica VPS.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm looking for some backup space to backup files from my homelab. The main data in my lab is hosted on a 1TB nvme, I dont even use 10% of this at the moment but as I do more with the lab I expect to use more space.

Ideally I'd like the server to be in the UK but Europe is fine, I'd prefer it to be a KVM server. It won't be running any services like http or mysql, the only traffic it will see is me syncing files to the server or pulling down a backup.

So anything from 250GB to 1TB space is needed paid monthly or annually for a bigger saving 😁

New products on the horizon!

In the coming weeks, we'll be launching two new exciting products: NVMe VPS and Block Storage as a service. BSaaS?

Our new RAID-10 NVMe virtual servers will be perfect for those I/O intensive applications, such as SQL, Redis, etc. We plan on launching this service by the end of this week, or the beginning to middle of next week.

The new block storage will be sold as an add-on to any of our dedicated servers, VPS or colocation services. The block storage is powered by HGST HelioSeal SAS drives in a mirrored ZFS configuration. (RAID-10 equivalent) It will be a perfect way to add some inexpensive extra storage to your servers. This service is planned to be launched as soon as our developers have completed our billing module. We're hoping to have this service launched within the next 3-4 weeks.

Keep your eyes open for announcements and product launch sales!

*Please note, initially these products will only be available in Phoenix, AZ.

Why is backup storage so expensive?

I've been browsing around for a small cheap vps, and something odd caught my attention.

For example:
A VPS at Contabo with 2 cores, 4 GB RAM and 300GB SSD is 3.99€ a month. Fair enough, not a bad price at all.
While ordering above mentioned VPS, you can add backup space. That is a separate storage accessible via ftp/sftp where you can store backups. For 100GB of backup storage, the monthly fee increases with 3.99€.
Now this doesn't make sense to me. Instead of paying for 100GB of storage only, I could buy a complete second VPS and get 3 times the storage for the same price!

I have seen similar pricing on a lot of other providers, and I just cant figure out why backup storage costs equal to or often a lot more then a complete VPS.
Why is backup space/secondary storage so damn expensive?

Curious to see how everyone does their backups, this is how we do ours ;

Currently we automate all of our backups using an Ansible role that manages our borgbackup server along with all of the borg clients. It adds/modifies scripts and crons on the clients (hypervisors) based on the variables we set and makes sure the clients can SSH into an unprivileged user and only access a specific directory as specified in
.ssh/authorized_keys
so it can push all of the data into a borg repo. Before it runs the borg portion of the script though, another tool on Proxmox (vzdump) backups up all of the VMs daily to the local disk and compresses them with pigz (multi-threaded gzip). Borg will then send all of the specified directories & files to our remote borg server for safe keeping.

I just added support for rclone so that after the all of the clients finish their backups for the day, it will do a weekly
rclone sync
on the borg server to our bucket on Wasabi object storage. I picked Wasabi, because they don't charge for egress (outgoing bandwidth). So in the event of a major disaster and we've lost our borg server, we could retrieve our borg repos from Wasabi.
