Hey guys,

Long time lurker, and used to be active on the other green forum - great to see familiar usernames, hope everyone's well.

In a pickle - I support a charity in the UK and we're moving some bits and bobs around. Current webhost isn't quite cutting it (not their fault), and I kinda want something I can set and forget, and not be bothered with. Also, as it's a charity it's the case that cheap is very much good.

Website is a WordPress based monstrosity held together by hope, sellotape, and a Frankenstein Elementor/ACP that has zero documentation and too many plugins. Currently with NameCrane and we're whacking the CPU limits, despite really minimal traffic - it breaks Elementor's back end, and requires me to swear at it for the people who 'manage the website' to be able to use it again. Things are as cached as they can be on the frontend without things breaking.

I could move it over to a VPS, sure, but then there's the issue of nobody being able to manage that if/when I'm no longer supporting - so shared hosting is realistically the option.
So, looking for something that's silly cheap, and would be alright with a badly optimised wordpress site to hit the CPU a couple times a day when someone's in wp-admin.

We're currently on NameCrane's 25GB $3.75/qr plan for reference on how cheapskate this needs to be - thought that'd sort things 6 months ago or so, apparently not.

If anyone has any ideas on hosts, I'd really appreciate it. I'd also welcome creative ways to say 'you need to fix this monstrosity' and/or 'increase the budget on things - I'm completely aware of the deep sighs people will have reading this.

Thoughts and prayers.

Hello everyone,

I manage the website for a number of clubs, local pharmacies and doctors' surgeries. I also do the accounts for some of them. I noticed that they were spending a lot of money on web hosting. Then I looked up how much money one club was spending per month on web hosting for a static website that was not even 100MB in size, and I was almost blindsided: this club was paying €99 per month for a dedicated root server. I investigated further and found out that the customers are all on one server, but the whole server is charged for each one. I can also prove that the same IP address but supposedly different servers. More interestingly, the server is only purchased as a reseller and costs less than €49 per month. According to my documentation, my admin customers alone transfer around €1000 per month to the reseller company.

Now comes the dilemma I find myself in. The hosting company that runs the servers used to be a good friend and colleague of mine.

The question is what should I do with the information, should I inform the customers or should I make it public by naming names or should I just stay out of it? I spoke to the host, my ex-colleague, yesterday and he said you have to exploit people's stupidity to maximise your profit. He pointed to his Porsche. He also subtly threatened me that my hosting company could get into trouble if I said anything.

Maybe you can help me or give me some advice? Thank you so much!

Hello everyone.

I don't know if this is the right place, but I'm looking for a hosting buddy (m/f/x), it would be an advantage if he/she could speak German.

Brief background: I run a web hosting company since 2015. I currently have a total of 27 server locations worldwide. These include reseller accounts, vServers (VPS), root servers and dedicated servers. The web control panels currently used are DirectAdmin, plesk and FASTPANEL.

Unfortunately, somehow it's not working, I've only made losses in the last few years.

I would be very happy if someone could help me to achieve some success. Unfortunately I can't pay a salary, but I would offer a profit share of up to 50%.

If you are interested, please send me a private message to discuss the details.

I would be delighted if someone could help me.

Greetings Andy

Hi everyone, I spent a few months working on this storage project which is still in alpha but I really need basic testing just to ensure I'm not the only one that thinks it's stable (and then I can at least call it beta).

I'm looking for at least 3 reputable persons on the forum (but preferrably not providers for obvious reasons of competition at this point) who would test the service. Reputable should be people with at least 1 year of existence here or on OGF. At least 50 non-spammy comments would be nice.

This service will be "free" for AT LEAST A MONTH OR MORE (but obviously I need feedback as to whether it's stable or one experiences any quirks - so that's the catch). As a great thank you if issues are found, I'd really try to extend that time as a thank you to the testers. There might be times where the panel could go down when I do updates but that does not affect the SFTP access in any way.

If all goes well, I want to develop a second phase which will add some super cool features (since right now it's just SFTP access).

Anyways, enough talking, here's what you get:

100 GB SFTP Storage (how boring) but...
1. This 100 GB of SFTP is on RAID 1 and is located in Canada (250 mbit unlimited: OVH).
2. The storage is NEVER OVERSOLD (which hopefully means access times should rarely if ever be affected by oversold storage). At this point, looking at a max of 20 users if it's 100 GB blocks, less if it's portioned in bigger blocks.
3. The 100 GB is replicated to another dedicated server (which also is on RAID 1) in a different geographical region (in this case London - OVH) periodically (more details can be provided once you're selected to test) and will be adjusted based on feedback and testing.
4. A custom built "technical" storage panel that doesn't just show you just disk space. I'm nearly sure you've never seen ANYTHING like this (even though it's not necessarily aesthetically pleasing) but when I say ANYTHING - let's just say you literally know what's going on with the server and storage details. Hint: IO WAIT, TEMP, UPTIME AND DEEPER DETAILS. This is a super important part that I hope makes the service worth the planned price (if it ever reaches public release).
5. And most importantly, "you can sleep good at night" since you don't have to guess what's going on about your storage, it's stored in 2 different geographical reasons and you in theory have access to both servers in the rare event one of the servers go down (both accessible via SFTP with the same login details).

This package when I did the numbers would be around $4.50 a month (assuming 50 cents out of this goes to the payment gateway) if I ever reach the point of releasing to the public.

I understand this is totally expensive but you'll get more details as I said other than "cloud" storage where you just totally rely on the word of the company. I hope the value of having to not worry while sleeping would be worth it?

I have personal interest in this project since I plan to also be my own "customer" - I really want to sleep better at night knowing my data is safe from loss (to a higher degree). This in theory is still not considered a backup but I think it's more robust than guessing and hoping people are doing your storage right for you.

So please PM if you're interested (it's a manual set up and would require you to register an account at ONDDNS.com since the panel uses my own SSO technology).

Thanks again at least for reading even if you don't decide to PM in.

Additional rules: You agree to not screenshot, share further details with others at this point until launch IF all goes well - launch would be delayed by a few months well IF I get to 2nd phase of development.

Hi, I'm considering renting a VPS in Asia Pacific region and am looking for recommendations.

Here are a list of target specs:
4-8 GB RAM
50 GB SSD (NVMe not required)
1-3 CPU threads @ 2.4 GHz
200 Mbps up/down
100 GB/mo bandwidth
IPv4 access
KVM preferred

It looks like GreenCloudVPS has a plan that fits this. What's everyone's experience with their service?

Is it worth waiting for Black Friday deals? It seems that most deals are EU/US...

Thank you everyone for your time!

I'm about to do some tests with a dedicated and the Firstheberg atom with double disks would be perfect for my tests.

However, never been a firstheberg customer (and their FAQ page is not working), I would like to know if it's possible to mount a sysrescuecd from their panel and reboot without needing to open a ticket.

Anyone here that is a firstheberg customer who can confirm that this is possible?

Hi folks, how are you?
First, let me say, great site, and great guides. I know there is a dummy proxmox setup guide, but, since im truly new (first time I bought and use Linux), its kinda hard getting all to work ok, but, im getting used to.
Im following this guide: https://lowendspirit.com/postinstall-configuration-of-proxmox-ve-6-2 god bless not_oles ^^

Problems I currently have:
Cant link a domain to my server. I use a freenom domain, already pointed domain to server, but, don't know in wich part of the server sould I asign the domain.
I have it assign in "Host", don't know if its right or not, but when I try to enter, I get empty response on port 8006.

On both domains its the same.

Thx for the help, and sorry for the n00b question.
