I was about to post a new offer, really more to provide some updates, it's probably not good, @msatt was probably right

I decided to just post a single TierHive thread instead. I might still post some offers and specials from time to time, but for now, I will keep it contained to a single thread for updates etc, as most offer threads seem to turn in to that anyway.

So what's been going on recently?

Updates in live bullet points to keep it simple

IPv6 was added, its free, you get 1 x /64 per location and can then add individual addresses from that /64 to any VPS in that location, elastic IPv6 coming based on user take-up over 6 months, Current user take-up on IPv6 is 1.5% This is measured by the number of users that have allocated at least 1 IPv6 address to a VPS.

Users can now allocate 5 additional NAT ports in addition to the SSH port.

Users can now manage the internal forwarding of ports, so for example, if you are allocated 2345 you can have that forward to 8080 internal if you want.

You can now download your SSL certificate from the HAProxy directly. I don't fully understand why anyone wants this, but it's a very popular request.

We have introduced burst buckets on IOPS and Network as of today for network and disk, you now can now double your tier limit for 5 seconds continuously, any VPS that existed before today will need to change their network and disk tier down and up again to gain access to this (Sorry, it's a pain in the ass to do restrospectivley) so if medium tier is on 300mbit for example you will be able to do 600mbit for 5 seconds sustained, then when you idle again below 300mbit your bucket empties and you can burst up again on demand. (Hope I explained that ok)

You can now copy the IP, Port or whole ssh string separately in the UI, aparently that was annoying for Windows users.

Crypto mining detectors are now deployed on all nodes, load dropped globally by 50% in the first hour haha.. just wow.

We decided to remove the network disk options and the sql service, and the mail relay, even fewer people use this than use IPv6 so it's not really worth the code maintenance and complexity. It might come back one day, for now its not worth it, you will still be able to attack backups as network disks.

We plan to decouple the backups from the VPS so that you can put a VPS disk image on cold storage.

Added an FAQ which is being built following support tickets to provide real answers without needing to open a ticket, but you can if you want anyway.

Things we are playing with now that may make it out of the sand pit version.

A static hosting layer, which will likely just be free to any user with a positive balance, details still in progress.

We want to start charging less for shut down VPS, obviously we still maintain the mesh elements, the disk/data, and the firewall and port reservations and have to account for the fact that you can boot it at any time, but initially I am thinking 50% discount for powered off servers, it helps us keep it cheap if you make the effort to shut down when not using it.

unikernels - not me playing with this, I think its an interesting idea but lets see where it goes

Bring your own image automation, this will have 2 modes, give us the key or password for another running VPS somewhere else and we will try to import it, obviously its best if thats in rescue mode but not absolutely needed, and just give us the url to a qcow2 or raw image and we will do the rest.

long long long term, personal project I am working on multiplexing VNC for audio into a custom html5 client using a single WebSocket, but this is actually sort of for another project but would be cool in TierHive.

It makes me very sad how few people have enabled DHCP or mess with the DHCP options for your scopes, it took me bloody ages to get it working over the whole /24 regardless of location, so I will probably end up being free, if people still don't use it, ah well, its done, nothing new to add.

network page for network tests and mesh status.

And thats it, thats my update, probably missed 100 minor things but at least I have a thread to do it in now.

You can self-migrate your own server in most instances. Big HDD storage is only available in London right now.

MAJOR UPDATE

We essentially replaced the NAT logic in the back end after many complaints about only getting 1 extra port, now all VPSs are provisioned with ONLY 1 port for SSH (you get the matching UDP port anyway) then you can self-allocate up to 3 more ports, and you can set which internal port it forwards too.

This also means those who never needed or want the extra port forwarding to their VPS can remove it, you can add and remove ports at will now. Currently, we have set it to 4 ports (1 for ssh + 3 extra). Depending on use over the next month or so, we may hike that up to 5 or 10, we will see.

We are currently working on finally rolling out the HAProxy stats for end users, few little bits of fine-tuning to do still on that.

We may have also come up with a way to add IPv6 in a way that won't hurt the final IPv6 plan for TierHive, so IPv6 may be coming in Alpha sooner rather than later. I have some research to do on NS Delegation for end users who might want to manage their own zone/PTR

We figured out how to get a bit more speed networking-wise for end users with more efficient limiting, rule sets and dynamic balancing, which has been well recieved, there were some complaints from the nodeseek people early on about this (Anyone that uses nodeseek please let people know, I will very much appreciate that)

We are still looking to add Singapore as the next location once the stars align. I thought it would have been ready by now, but we had to back out while we focused on other, more important things with the NAT system, we realised we boxed ourselves in with that so we wanted to fix it before going any further.

Most other changes have been admin or hypervisor side to make our lives easier.

One of which is our own abuse monitoring system that checks for torrent, tor, mining, spam, port scanning abuse in real time, which we are looking to release as a separate product, it currently supports email, or webhook alerts (slack, zulip etc)

As a side note, we have discovered a lot of people are using this service for Discord bots, as most of them will run just fine on a micro instance, which is around $0.10/month equivalent, if anyone runs any commercial projects that need resources on demand in small amounts like this and wants to do some sort of post provisioning billing system we can arrange that, i.e. you can run a certain amount in advance and then you only pay if you get paid, we would love to hear from you.

Additionally, if anyone just has any cool or interesting projects and wants them to be sponsored, if it fits with the spirit of the project, we may consider providing free resources within reason. we recently sponsored the kansas location for https://check-host.cc/ for example, what have you got?

^Check out the pricing calculator on our website!

** The Basics **

This is just a regular NAT VPS platform with a lot of added optional extras to make it more functional as a service.

You get 2 TCP/UDP ports per VPS

You can manage your own /24 from 10.0.0.0/8 so you might get 10.5.251.0/24 (10.5.251.2 - 10.5.251.254)

Your servers, no matter where they are, can talk on your private LAN without port limits, so you can have multiple entry points, consider the external IP's like edge routers.

You get to manage your own DHCP scope if you want for your /24, including pxe/ipxe/dns etc

We are privacy-focused to the extent we can be, we don't need your personal details, we use an MOR model for payments so we don't need your data, we don't collect it, just an email address and username/password. Accounts that are not active are set to purge after 90 days, we dont store your IP info beyond that.

You cannot run up debt; the billing is hourly, if you dont have enough on account to cover the current hour, we just take the partial payment as full for that hour like if that hour should cost 0.02 and you only have 0.01 we just take the 0.01 for that hour and that triggers your 6 hour warning to top up, we just leave your servers live for free during those 6 hours and eat that, after 6 hours we do suspend, then you have a few days to top up before services are removed, after they are removed, you can still top up and start over, no debt, no problem.

limited to 2GB Ram for now per VPS, but we plan to raise that to 4GB this month and finally 8GB, which will probably always be the maximum.

What you get:

NAT VPS in DE, UK, and CA (UK being restocked soon)

Your own /24 - spin up to 253 VPS instances

Private network segment that works across ALL locations

Self-migrate and self-install - you're in control

All Linux/BSD templates available

Optional DHCP with full options.

ipxe/pxe boot available, run your own network installs.

netboot.xyz compatible

1 click deployments of laravel, WireGuard, OpenVPN, Wordpress, Docker, GRAVcms, LAMP, LibreNMS, Nextcloud, Vaultwarden, Beszel, Docker and more coming soon.

A recipe system e.g. deploy 6 VM's in xyz locations, run script1.sh on the first 3 and script2.sh on the next 3, sql offload, automatically pass database info to scripts, and auto configure haproxy for VPS 2 using domain example.xyz

Optional network attached storage.

Optional scheduled or 1 time backups.

What we handle for free:

SSL termination

Reverse proxy

Email

Database offloading

Build recipes (automate your deployments or deploy community recipes)

Earn free credit by promoting us with backlinks or posts on X

Want to kick the tyres first? It's free to try.

Ever wanted to learn how to network boot or deploy/install an OS? this is like a homelab in the cloud!

Perfect for homelabbers, developers or just tinkering and learning, its for anyone who needs cheap test environments, or anyone who wants flexibility without the price tag.

What it is NOT
- Pretending to be an enterprise solution
- Trying to win benchmark competitions
- As fast as most VPS hosts
- Where you use for your precious data without backups.

General project update

Not as many this time, I have not been well again and was forced to slow down again.

But key things:

Kansas City is live thanks to @Advin and whenever he has capacity elsewhere, we will spread to his all his locations, so if you like the service in Kansas, and want to fully unlock it, Advin Servers is the natural next step and pushing your TierHive disk image into one of their VPS will work fine (via rescue).

DHCP Price has been drastically lowered, honestly, I don't know why it was so high, it is now 0.000005 to activate (generates the full config for your subnet and gets offloaded to us to run in all locations) and then is 0.000001 per hour to remain active. to be honest, only a handful of people use it, and it makes me say, I thought it was a killer feature maybe I need to make a video, maybe I am just a nerd.

Reddit referrals were a disaster, far to much manual work, that won't come back until I figure out a better way, but please join us on Reddit anyway, if you contribute, you will probably get some sneaky tokens. https://www.reddit.com/r/TierHive/ even if you dont want too participate it really helps if you join.

Pleased to see some of the SEO/LLMO is paying off, getting quite a lot of referrals via LLM now and on the 1st and 2nd page of Google for a few phrases now, not huge traffic but increasing week by week.

We lowered the entry point to $3 for February (You can still get free tokens on sign up).

We solved a big scaling bug that was SERIOUSLY slowing things down for people network-wise, so we literally made that 10x faster while reducing latency (classic case of you don't know what you don't know until you do)

It's becoming apparent to me based on comments and tickets that people don't really get it still, beyond a NAT VPS and that's fair enough, so for the rest of this month, my main focus is going to be on simplifying the message/info, making some tutorials, videos and diagrams etc.

We know London is crawling, sorry, we need more compute there, we will get to it asap.

It's not impossible you will also see France or Poland or both towards the end of the month, but its not a priority.

We are looking at adding a static hosting option, considering if things go to plan, we will have edge SSL termination in 50 locations eventually with CDN and meshed routing for faster TTFP entry points for your local traffic base its just a no brainer, probably a free tier and a pad tier the only difference will be CDN priority group and space, its actually not that hard to add.

I am feeling the IPv6 pressure, I am not leading on that, I would just like to say, I get it, but it wont be rushed, we want you to be able to allocate your own /64's make sure they work over the mesh from any location, and allow you to home a /64 to what ever location you want, not just a basic short term fix that then becomes hard to untie. also to add to that, in over a dacade of offering IPv6 and actually seeing what people actually use, its just a fact that 90% of people take it because its free and available, probably 1% of them actually use it, so its important, because its a NAT service, but its not a priority.

We fixed a mail relay bug that was allowing you to send without dkim validation... naughty spammers!

We fixed a suspension on payment bug i.e. if you ran out of credit on free tokens and THEN topped up after you were already suspended it did not auto unsuspend.

Coming soon / general project update

We have been looking more closely at what we already have in place and what the project use looks like.

Big takeaways so far this is just my stream of consciousness spilling out on the keyboard really:

No one wants a mail relay, but is exists so its not going anywhere.

You can say no thank you to China all you want, China does not care.

Vietnam is removed from the block list.

We allow ordering from DC IP's, proxies and VPNs now, we just dont always give free credit (You get warned first during sign up if that's likely to happen)

Alpine is WAY more popular in general than I thought, to the point I have started to love it myself.

Coming up to 1500 live users, we are now considering if we want to add new locations, we are thinking NYC Metro area or boring but safe France/Poland/Netherlands

No one really wants sql offloading

HAProxy is proving VERY popular, we enabled http/2 (was missing)

We are looking to implement the CDN elements, caching, etc at the HAProxy edges.

Haproxy Global distribution for your domain is available now, so every edge will accept and route the traffic over your meshed subnet and hold your SSL for faster TTFP, the myth of having many IPs pointing to your domain also is available as standard here too, my jury is out on that one for SEO.

Support requirements have been supprisingly minimal, so thats a good sign.

We are looking to add traffic stats to the dashboard from the HAProxy servers for your hosted domains and may implement opt in honey pot and WAF features so we can start eating the shit before it hits your VPS.

recipe market place is hit and miss, more people are using it than expected for their own scripted server and stack deployments but keeping them private, almost no one is making anything public, so we are considering seperating this out in to optional quick deployments directly into the VPS creation process to replace recipes and having your own automation section for your own stacks, say "Throw out 5 VPS in each location and run these scraipts/commands in this order on VPS 1,2,3 and these commands and scripts on vps 4 and 5.

I am sad that almost no is playing with the ipxe/pxe options in the network/dhcp section, maybe that should just be free.

Considering moving to BETA end of Feb, earlier than expected, but we have had fewer issues than expected.

I need to do more work on the templates, we use the defaults for the most part from the official distros but they are more bloated than then need to be.

What We Offer and Why It's Different.

NAT Hourly VPS service with a network first principal, upon sign-up (free tokens) or first payment, your network is setup, you get a whole /24 e.g. 10.55.44.0/24, this is meshed across all locations for you, so you can create a vps in Germany and a vps in the UK and a VPS in Canada and they can all talk to each other directly on your own isolated network as if they were on the same LAN.

You can self-migrate your own servers between regions.

You can change your own Ram/Disk and priority tier resources for your VPS

You get 2 TCP/UDP ports forwarded to every VPS you create so it becomes reachable from outside.

We offer HAProxy + SSL termination at no extra cost, and provide starter webserver configs for compatibility.

Email relay services, we also allow email through most major relays as standard.

Database offloading, let us do that compute work for you.

Recipe system, want to deploy WireGuard to 200 VPS at once? , want to deploy 100 VPS at once?, want to deploy a LibreNMS cluster with nodes? , Want your known dev environment set up automatically for you?
