I have always used keys because it's more convenient but I was just wondering how keys are more secure as compared to an extremely strong password (say, 24 characters long comprising of multiple symbols, uppercase+lowercase alphabets and numbers all mixed up randomly)?

Some VPS admin interfaces offer to insert an SSH key on the deployment page.

I figured I'd paste my public key here, to be able to log in afterwards.

So far, I have never been able to do so. Switching to password login and uploading my key manually, it does work.

I don't know the names of the different admin options; today I ran into the problem on Abdullah's Webhorizon in NL. After deployment, there is an entry for SSH keys, but I can't log in with keys:

Besides, there is a 'sharing' option, with an acces--token box.

Other than asking around, is there a generic way to figure out which admin interface a VPS provider is running?

Even if it is too late when someone else logs in as root on your server, it is good to know that NOW is the time to get working on your security.

To setup email notification, login to your server as root.
Edit .bashrc

editor .bashrc

add the following line at the end, changing “ServerName” to the hostname of your server and “email@thisaddress.com” to your own email address.

Next time someone, hopefully you, logs on as root, you will get an email about this.

This can be done for any user, you only have to make sure that the user can email out from your server.

TL;DR I want to reverse ssh tunnel port on an IPv4 assigned port.
But all local internal IP port is closed ( except SSH port).
i forwarded PC FTP port to any port.
On localhost (127.0.0.1:any-port) can connect, port scanning shows opened.
On Internal IP (172.1ww.xx.yy:any-port). connection refused, port scanning shows closed.

I port forward to my assign ports. still no dice.

any ideas what i need to do?
