I watch your dynamic offers including some RAM and SSD but then it gets much more expensive.
Currently i only use ~10 TB of HDD storage + backup and only ~5 mbit average.

Harddrives are mostly only for backups and log data, while for sorting & refining data, of course one needs SSD & RAM sometimes (and some always, for caching and ZFS). - Yet I still work only on 64GB DDR4 (as avaiable for $5 from OVH at times. No SSD. And 100ms latency to my storage...)
QUESTION OF THE DAY:
WHY IS THERE NO COMPETITIVE SSD HOST?
The SSD hosting prices are crazy by now, when actually buying SSD servers starts around $20/TB. (a 2020 Server with 24 x 8 TB NVMe, might costs $4000 and power consumption of SSDs is minimal. So despite the performance the prices are similar to HDD now. SSD can be even cheaper considering wear down, electricity and no hardware failures. (The 95th quantile of load or write speed could be limited therefore for low budget plans (almost nobody will constantly use the crazy high speed) - Yet as of now, my non-profit projects still can't afford hosted SSDs (like commerce can usually) (but my project are held back to HDD speeds, as if it was 20 or 30 years ago.
So of course i wonder to buy an SSD server, but why would i really have to? isn't that strange? Why does Nobodies offers such machine for an acceptable rent?

Contabo gives 2400GB storage VPS "SSD" starting at 12,6€ ("-10% sales"), but they have 1 star on google and reviews and terms that these can be lost anytime with no backup (no raid even?) .

I am searching for a storage vps for around $20/yr. From what I can find, Alpha vps and servarica seem to be recommended for storage vps. Also crunchbits, but they seem to be out of stock, always.
I'm leaning towards Alpha vps at the moment, as they have plans around my price point, but am waiting for the black friday before making a decision.
I was previously eyeing c1v but, well, that ship is better left abandoned.
So, what providers do you guys recommend for a small storage vps for around $20/yr? I don't have much in terms of requirements. Around 100GB if SSD, and around 256GB if HDD. Would prefer SSD.
I want to host immich and move away from Google Photos.

Hello everyone,

We are thinking of deploying a new storage service under our Focus lineup (non-core services).

This would be a somewhat limited run (limited capacity, some TB) for now, but it would be a run at a great price.

However, the uptime record of the possible upstream provider is not C-Servers brilliant, and falls very much short of our 99.95% uptime guarantee that we have for the VPSes, with an estimate of 87-95% so far.

The price would be very low nonetheless, much lower than usual, and Internet speed would be fast.

Would you consider purchasing such a service? Vote, and we'll hear you.

After analyzing the traffic of the last few months, we found that we pay hundreds of EURs for the guaranteed 1150Mbps connection (2000Mbps best-effort) despite the fact that we have a monthly consumption that does not even reach 25%.

What is acceptable use?
Acceptable use means not abusing the received resources by using them at maximum capacity for more than a few consecutive hours.
Since the definition is quite vague, you can see that you have a problem if for 3 EUR per month you consume 300 EUR of traffic.
To limit the consequences of a possible abuse, you can contact us through the ticket system before the purchase or pay only for one month so that you can migrate to another provider if your services will be limited to a lower speed in the event of the discovery of any abuse. Hi everyone, I spent a few months working on this storage project which is still in alpha but I really need basic testing just to ensure I'm not the only one that thinks it's stable (and then I can at least call it beta).

I'm looking for at least 3 reputable persons on the forum (but preferrably not providers for obvious reasons of competition at this point) who would test the service. Reputable should be people with at least 1 year of existence here or on OGF. At least 50 non-spammy comments would be nice.

This service will be "free" for AT LEAST A MONTH OR MORE (but obviously I need feedback as to whether it's stable or one experiences any quirks - so that's the catch). As a great thank you if issues are found, I'd really try to extend that time as a thank you to the testers. There might be times where the panel could go down when I do updates but that does not affect the SFTP access in any way.

If all goes well, I want to develop a second phase which will add some super cool features (since right now it's just SFTP access).

Anyways, enough talking, here's what you get:

100 GB SFTP Storage (how boring) but...
1. This 100 GB of SFTP is on RAID 1 and is located in Canada (250 mbit unlimited: OVH).
2. The storage is NEVER OVERSOLD (which hopefully means access times should rarely if ever be affected by oversold storage). At this point, looking at a max of 20 users if it's 100 GB blocks, less if it's portioned in bigger blocks.
3. The 100 GB is replicated to another dedicated server (which also is on RAID 1) in a different geographical region (in this case London - OVH) periodically (more details can be provided once you're selected to test) and will be adjusted based on feedback and testing.
4. A custom built "technical" storage panel that doesn't just show you just disk space. I'm nearly sure you've never seen ANYTHING like this (even though it's not necessarily aesthetically pleasing) but when I say ANYTHING - let's just say you literally know what's going on with the server and storage details. Hint: IO WAIT, TEMP, UPTIME AND DEEPER DETAILS. This is a super important part that I hope makes the service worth the planned price (if it ever reaches public release).
5. And most importantly, "you can sleep good at night" since you don't have to guess what's going on about your storage, it's stored in 2 different geographical reasons and you in theory have access to both servers in the rare event one of the servers go down (both accessible via SFTP with the same login details).

This package when I did the numbers would be around $4.50 a month (assuming 50 cents out of this goes to the payment gateway) if I ever reach the point of releasing to the public.

I understand this is totally expensive but you'll get more details as I said other than "cloud" storage where you just totally rely on the word of the company. I hope the value of having to not worry while sleeping would be worth it?

I have personal interest in this project since I plan to also be my own "customer" - I really want to sleep better at night knowing my data is safe from loss (to a higher degree). This in theory is still not considered a backup but I think it's more robust than guessing and hoping people are doing your storage right for you.

Hi, I've got storage servers with HostHatch ($1/TB/mo) and Servarica ($2/TB/mo). Anyone know of deals going inside this price range with other providers?

No hard location/RAM/CPU requirements, just have to be able to use borg & scp, and has to have reasonable resilience (not single drive or RAID0). Doesn't have to be a VPS, but needs to have reasonable retrieval BW included (not like AWS & co). Thanks.

Hi all, I am looking for a good storage VPS for personal backups. I am mainly interested in storage VPSes, but if a regular backup provider would work, I am open to those. So far, the best offer that I've found is the Lobster Unlimited Expanding Storage Plan from Servarica, which is $10/month for 2 TB plus 3 GB/day (= 1 TB/year). I also found Jottacloud, but their upload speeds are quite slow from here (US east coast). Any of the other backup providers that I've found either don't support backing up data stored on a NAS or don't support encryption/rclone.

I am looking for offers around $10/month but can go a little bit higher if necessary. Currently I am estimating my backup size at 1.8 TB, so I would prefer 3 TB+ unless the storage is increased periodically like the Servarica VPS.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Now that I grabbed more VPSs than I actually was supposed to (thanks, Black Friday!), I'll have to configure a bunch of them at different providers and different locations. Basically just a bunch of the same operations (user creation, apt, secure ssh, ssh keys, install docker, ufw, etc..)

Question: What would be the best way to automatize this process with heterogeneous providers and locations?

Also, I am migrating away from my Hetzner Storage Box, which is pretty neat in its configuration. With some switches, it enables/disables access and transfer protocols

And it creates sub-accounts with related folders and access rights (each row is an account here), all with switches.

Question: does a similar solution (preferably free/opensource) exist that I could install on my upcoming HostHatch and LetBox storage servers?

I've been browsing around for a small cheap vps, and something odd caught my attention.

For example:
A VPS at Contabo with 2 cores, 4 GB RAM and 300GB SSD is 3.99€ a month. Fair enough, not a bad price at all.
While ordering above mentioned VPS, you can add backup space. That is a separate storage accessible via ftp/sftp where you can store backups. For 100GB of backup storage, the monthly fee increases with 3.99€.
Now this doesn't make sense to me. Instead of paying for 100GB of storage only, I could buy a complete second VPS and get 3 times the storage for the same price!

I have seen similar pricing on a lot of other providers, and I just cant figure out why backup storage costs equal to or often a lot more then a complete VPS.
Why is backup space/secondary storage so damn expensive?
