Hey everyone! 👋

I wanted to share a piece of my private collection of custom ansible roles that I've created for configuring and managing various VPSs, lowends included. I've recently decided to make one of these roles, Boringguard, public to see if it might be useful to the community.

Features:

• Compatibility: It works with deb/apt-based distros like Debian 11+ (might work with 9+, haven't tested), Ubuntu 20.04+, Armbian, and RPM-based RHEL8+ distros (CentOS, Rocky, Alma, Oracle, etc).
• Boringtun Installation: This role can install Boringtun, a userspace Wireguard daemon implementation by CloudFlare, which doesn't require a kernel module. It's great for container-based VPSs (OpenVZ, LXC, Virtuozo, etc), especially if you have TUN/TAP capability. It even works on NAT VPSs with UDP port-forwarding.

• Binary Packages Included (.deb and .rpm): Since there's no official repo for Boringguard and no distro packages available, I've built binaries from sources for various architectures (x86_64, aarch64, ARMv7). This includes builds with MUSL lib as well as Glibc, to better suit resource-constrained devices. Should work on a variety of small/embedded devices, like SBCs, ARM routers, etc. Tested on Hetzner CAX ARM64 plans and ARMv7 Orange Pi One SBC.
  Don't trust my binaries? I'm absolutely with you here You can build and add your own. The packages to install are configurable in a yaml vars file. Let me know if you need a guide for building those packages. Just a ~couple of requests and I'll write recipe to automate building those packages I have there.

• Configurations and QR Codes: Configure the server with as many peers as you want and generate client config files and QR-codes.

• Idempotent with Persistent Config: The primary reason I created my own 'Wireguard installer' is probably its idempotency and persistent configuration. It's mostly inspired by the "Nyr wireguard-install script", but I found it lacking in the ability to restore VPN settings on VPS reinstall/migration/etc. (like almost every Wireguard install script), not to mention the absence of ARM support. This is where Ansible comes in as a more suitable tool for such tasks - you simply define your configuration with variables for each host (or even host group), tweak some settings or start with the defaults, and set up your VPN. Once generated, items like private keys and other settings will be stored on the host used for configuration (the "ansible host").
  I don't want to configure clients from scratch every time I need to rebuild a VPS. Or manually fix configs on VPS migration, for example. Can be a serious hassle if you have many VPSs or clients. Managed configuration approach solves a few things at once here:
  • a) generates a populated VPN config file which you can edit. When you run the playbook again, the new settings will be applied;
  • b) ensures that if you reinstall/migrate/change your VPS, running the playbook again will install and restore the same settings as before (assuming the hostname remains the same). Peers can connect with the same keys/certs as before.

This might not be a huge deal, but it's incredibly useful for me. As a part of a much larger "VPS toolkit" I have, which I'm not planning to make fully public (it's tailored to my specific environment). However, if Boringguard is useful to others, I might consider migrating more features from my private collection.

Shrimp was built since the great Squid was > 100,000 lines of code which made it difficult for us to audit. Further, we needed a forward proxy that worked in a very specific way:

Regular Mode

• Traffic goes over IPv4 or IPv6, whichever your stack decides

Lockdown Mode

• Traffic goes over IPv6 and uses NAT64 for IPv4, locked to a specific network interface

Shrimp will be very convenient for VPN providers who use Squid to provide forward HTTPS proxy services. Besides being lighter, Shrimp hashes passwords with bcrypt which is more secure at rest than the typical hashing used in other forward proxies.

For us, we built it so that we could provide a proxy appliance to our end users on Cloud Seeder which allows them to both run their own double hop proxy where they control one of the hops and also gain plausible deniability.

Personally I have two right now, one from @crunchbits in WA and one from @Hostaris in Frankfurt, so I can cover two continents broadly, but I feel like I might need an East coast US one, another EU location that's not too close to Germany, and perhaps one in Asia. I was first looking at the big providers like Mullvad for a VPN deal but a lot of these services are 5+ Euro per month and also come with strict device limits, sometimes as little as 5 connections. A friend on Discord said I should consider looking at getting a VPS and making my own VPN, which has now lead me here. I have enough previous knowledge that I can configure a WireGuard daemon and the configuration files, but I guess my main question is, can I accomplish what I am looking to do with a simple budget VPS?

Some of these Black Friday deals appear to be under $20 a year, and advertise 2TB bandwidth a month which I don’t think would be exceeded - people are typically streaming non high bitrate live TV with the odd torrent video here or there. And surely not 24/7…

Is there any pitfalls or problems I need to be aware of, or is this a sound and much more frugal solution than paying big VPN providers? Is there some TOS against media streaming or anything I should know, or running a VPN for up to 5+ people?

WireGuard is an exciting, new, extremely simple VPN system that uses state-of-the-art cryptography. Its Linux implementation runs in the kernel, which provides a significant performance boost compared to traditional userspace VPN implementations

The WireGuard kernel module is great, but sometimes you might not be able to install new kernel modules. One example scenario is on a VPS that uses OpenVZ or LXC. For these cases, we can use wireguard-go, a userspace implementation of WireGuard. This is the same implementation used on MacOS, Windows, and the WireGuard mobile apps. This implementation is slower than the kernel module, but still plenty fast.

This post focuses on Debian, however the instructions should mostly work on other Linux distros too.

Install WireGuard Tools

We need to install the WireGuard tools (wg-quick). On Debian, you can run this as root:

Install Go

Unfortunately, since wireguard-go is not packaged for Debian, we need to compile it ourselves. To compile it, we first need to install the latest version of the Go programming language (currently version 1.13.4).

Compile wireguard-go

Now that we've got Go, we can download and compile wireguard-go. Download the latest release version:

If you are on a system with limited RAM (256 MB or lower), which you probably are if you're on this forum, you will need to do a small tweak to the wireguard-go code to make it use less RAM. Open device/queueconstants_default.go and replace this:

MaxSegmentSize             = (1 << 16) - 1 // largest possible UDP datagram
PreallocatedBuffersPerPool = 0 // Disable and allow for infinite memory growth

With these values (taken from device/queueconstants_ios.go):

MaxSegmentSize             = 1700
PreallocatedBuffersPerPool = 1024

This will make it use a fixed amount of RAM (~20 MB max), rather than allowing memory usage to grow infinitely.

Now we can compile it:

Running wireguard-go --version should work and show the version number.

If you have multiple VPSes that use the same OS version and architecture (eg. Debian 10, 64-bit), you can compile it on one of them and then just copy the wireguard-go binary to all the others.

Configuration

wg0.conf

You'll need to configure /etc/wireguard/wg0.conf to contain the configuration for your peer. This post won't go into significant detail about this; please refer to another general WireGuard guide (like this one) for more details. The basic jist is that you need to run:

wg genkey | tee privatekey | wg pubkey > publickey

to generate a public/private key pair for each peer, then configure the [Interface] with the private key for the peer, and a [Peer] section for each peer that can connect to it.

Your wg0.conf should end up looking something like:

systemd

We need to modify the systemd unit to pass the WG_I_PREFER_BUGGY_USERSPACE_TO_POLISHED_KMOD flag to wireguard-go, to allow it to run on Linux. Open /lib/systemd/system/wg-quick@.service, find:

Environment=WG_ENDPOINT_RESOLUTION_RETRIES=infinity

and add this line directly below:

Environment=WG_I_PREFER_BUGGY_USERSPACE_TO_POLISHED_KMOD=1

Finally, enable and start the systemd service:

systemctl enable wg-quick@wg0
systemctl start wg-quick@wg0

Enabling the systemd service will connect the VPN on boot, and starting the systemd service will connect it right now.

You're Done

Now, everything should be working! You can check the status of wg-quick by running systemctl status wg-quick@wg0, which should return something like:

3. config Adguardhome's Adguardhome.yaml (127.0.0.1 -> your internal IP address), Like that

4. set up proxy from mrvm clients panel. (That domain forwarding bottom),this action give you a Adguard Home control panel

5. install openvpn or any other vpns then point the dns to your internal IP

my suggestion is bash a script

Now, you get a ad-free VPN and a DNS over https.

Is it too short?

From what I can tell, VPN providers seem to be evading the blocks by getting access to new IPv6 blocks from nondescript ASNs. Could I simply just register a new IPv6 block and RIPE/APNIC ASN and BGP peer with it - then run a VPN or Tunnelbroker of sorts and successfully access these Netflix libraries?
