AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU + Asus Motherboard = FIRE!!!!

I'm sure most of you already know this, but just wanted to share for those who have yet to see this.

Summary:

  • AMD f**ked up. CPUs are unstable and are slowly cooking themselves over regular use.
  • Asus f**ked up. Did not provide proper over-current protection on their motherboards, so when AMD cpu shorts out, the motherboard provides more and more current to cook the CPU.
  • Not everyone is affected, but many are.
  • Issue not limited to only Asus motherboards but test results are still up in the air.
  • Issue fixed to only AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPUs for now.
Will you buy a AMD CPU or Asus motherboard after this?

If it’s not broken, keep fixing it until it is. Blink twice if you agree.

    I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.

    Where Fire?

CPU die smokes out and it cracks the silicon die...

Estimated CPU internal temperature reaches around 1400 C (melted silicon found on die). IHS temp reaches 217 C

  • I thought it was over-volting the CPU that was the problem. If so, Asus is to blame for shipping the motherboard with a BIOS that let people increase the voltage beyond the supported limit.

Asus motherboards over-volts the CPU without user intervention. If the voltage is set to 1.2 volts in bios, Asus motherboards puts out 1.4 or 1.5 volts to the CPU.

As for the CPUs, they are also unstable much faster compared to all other CPUs. So both are to blame...

Still no fire, however smoke, will do too.

That's gonna be expensive for them. If the CPU burns down, they are supposed to replace it FOC for the user, right?

  • I won't buy AMD because low end Intel CPUs + Mainboard are cheaper in Vietnam.

Same. I usually buy intel as there is more support for it in Singapore, but I was planning to give AMD a try for the next gaming PC. I mean my daily use laptop uses AMD and it is pretty fast.

Intel without efficiency cores would be killer for AMD right now. I FEEL THE DRAMA IN THE AIR!

But AMD will be coming out with efficiency cores too. That seems to be the way for the future with higher demands for laptops and rising electricity costs...
