As the title asks, do you have a dedicated server for personal usage?

What are it specs? Which software do you run? Have you more IP blocks attached to it? Pricing?

So you just connect via RDP to this server and play for example cs2/gta or some other game?
Isn't latency for rdp is issue?

I use parsec and latency is actually not much of an issue. I'm actually surprised how well everything is going. (wired)
though mobile hotspot does kill it but games like minecraft or gta v where competitive settings isn't a thing it's alright.

Yup. 615.92€ onetime. (https://zap-hosting.com/en/shop/product/lifetime-dedicated-server/), but you have to login to the panel every 3 months. They seem to a) hope that most will forget sometime/don't actually need them for years and b) finance the lifetime dedis with normal monthly VPS/dedis. The lifetime cost is equal to 12 * monthly cost.
Edit: and they exist since 2015, and sometimes there even is an up to 25% coupon.

My workstation has an E3-1245 v3, which should be similar. At 150W it costs 350 €/year in electricity alone. The power plants in NY must run on holy spirit.

Another owner of ZAP Lifetime Dedi. How has your experience been overall with that one? You are saying good, but what exactly are you running on there. Got 2x lifetime ZAP VPS/Rootserver, but Dedi also sounds nice. I also remember someone else who got a lifetime dedi from ZAP. It's pretty cool that ZAP said they will even replace the Dedi if it dies, so it's not even limited to the lifetime of the hw, only lifetime of the company/buyer.

Unfortunately only 5 TB / month traffic even for the dedis, and no IPv6, but if you assume that the company exists for at least a few years, it's pretty cheap.
And have you somewhen made a YABS of a lifetime rootserver?

Yeah, but personally I wouldn't use as much traffic anyway. Plus you can pay for extra traffic on demand iirc.
So, there's that option, I guess. I posted a YABS somewhere in the ZAP thread. Pretty sure you'll find it if you look that one up.

I'm running 4 vm nodes which only 1 vm running a website and other 3 are idling.
So far I'm happy with it. been having issues with the remote management panel as i can't use it once i get disconnected and i need to forcefully reboot my dedicated server to make it work again and repeat if i get disconnected again sadly support was not able to find a solution but luckily i have not been presented an emergency to have that fixed. for the server experience it's been smooth so far.

they even replace it if it dies? oh perfect!

Good to hear! Yeah, check out the ZAP thread I created a while ago, someone who bought a lifetime dedi asked them via ticket and they said the dedi would get replaced.

Briefly had a pretty spicy hetzner (~70 pm).

...but got rid of it since I've got a fair amount of hw at home and static ipv4 on fibre so makes little sense

@Amadex I am using an i9-13900 in Helsinki. I like it cuz it's very fast when I compile stuff.

I hope everyone gets the servers they want!

nice! But have you used the processors Intel UHD Graphics 770 iGPU for anything tho?

  • No, I tend to stick to VPS, because every time I think of spending the money on a dedi, I come to the conclusion that I would be better off spending that money on upgrades to my Unraid box at home. But if the price was right, I probably would get one!

I have this in Arezzo, Italy for 23.99€ and /29 IPv4

    Xeon E3 1231v3 4 Core 3.30 Ghz
    32GB RAM
    2x480GB SSD
    1Gbps Uplink

New Hetzner cloud line is tempting as replacement, https://www.hetzner.com/cloud/

But real mens are using dedicated servers, I guess?

Thanks for being a loyal Xeon customer!
We've gone ahead and just doubled halved your bandwidth electricity spending - from now on your E3's TDP is 84 W.
