Seems like a very sophisticated heater!
it must be expensive
I can help with covering the cost.
A little. Like 7$ a year little.
^.-
Heater works, confirmed. It took about 40 of them looping through initial 60-stage Lenovo/IBM booting sequence to warm me up for a solid 15 minutes. The hot aisle was actually almost a hot aisle, so pretty similar to the cold aisle of a datacenter I visited in the New York region during a snowstorm.
I was really excited about the sale because of some of the prices I got worked out but it’s been so long I have no idea what they were or how I calculated them.

you got me really excited for the first 2 seconds then it peaked and now back to nought.

Storage server is ready. I'll likely deploy our lone beta tester to it tomorrow as I'm getting tired and still want to try to maybe ... oh wait it's 5:53PM, I was going to add in a few more things before heading out at 4PM. Hmm how'd that happen
Of all the storage VPS I have, Virmach still has the best Price/Performance out of all storage providers I've used. Looking forward to the sale.

Still down.
We cannot load the controls for your service at this time.
This could either mean:
A) It took too long to load. The server controls have been automatically disabled due to an anomaly.
C) The server could be offline, in which case we have already been notified.
@localhost said: @VirMach it is possible to reduce port speed to 1kbps if vps has hit the bandwidth limit instead of suspending it?
I wanted to ask you guys about this. The way it's currently set up is it just lets you go over and then bills you overages. That's probably not ideal if your service is compromised.
Alternative is immediate suspension.
Anything else would have to be worked in as a custom change but the module is ioncubed so it means we can't do any direct edits and will instead have to work around it, maybe letting it do the default where it lets you go over and bills overages, but then have our custom code come in and suspend it past a certain threshold, or perhaps let you set your own settings.
Reducing port speed, I feel less comfortable doing that since there's no API for the switch end of things.
The other thing I wanted to ask you guys is if you prefer (a) immediately on termination, the system attempts to wipe disks, or (b) it keeps it and only wipes on next setup. Either way, I have a feeling that disk wipes may not be very reliable so I'll try to put in some disclaimer/reminder to wipe disks on invoice generation emails and cancellation page.
I'm thinking for this one it might also be worth it to do our own script so we can also kind of have an overview of disk wipes, whether they succeeded or failed, and to be able to do our own delay/check on them in a more optimal way.
Waiting on Cox. I've said this a few times but basically someone at their company convinced them it's not secure to just pull our subnets from RADb, they require a form be filled out and signed every time and then an engineer going through manually and makes sure the subnet is registered under our company, to allow it through their filtering. And apparently they really like taking their time on it.
Later on we might just set things up in a way where we can have it bypass Cox any time there's a pending subnet change.

Waiting on DC hands, although I only checked a few hours ago. Maybe now it's waiting on me.

I do have beefier controllers available but for Oklahoma, I want to just go with the onboard Supermicro one as it'll help keep the theoretical total price down and everything simple. I ran some basic benchmarks and it peaked at somewhere around 3.8GB/s which seems to be as expected. I should probably swap out the CPUs though, I'll look into ordering those today.
I still think it'll beat the "price/performance" ratio versus other locations. Maybe I should let you get one early so you can give your stamp of approval before we start putting everyone on there.

Fair point. Let's not over engineer things. I can live probably till the vm comes alive after unsuspension

Not sure how often someone comes back past termination and warnings and asks gimme my data.

Immediately on termination. But send 10 reminders before termination 😅

Send 10 reminders 5 minutes before the termination and all is gold.

That's a shame, because I'd also prefer to see port speed reduction vs immediate suspension / overages. But, such is life. I think billing overages and using your own code to suspend over a certain amount would be the best option out of these, but I know that's more work that either default option. I think immediate suspension is probably better for most users than billing overages, in the meantime.

I'm indifferent here, but it's just because I assume it's always my responsibility to wipe my data, I don't trust any host to wipe it for me. Why not both?

Oh I should have probably mentioned it but the benefit of the no wipe on termination would be cases where someone forgot to renew. Not that our backups have been working great for virtual servers, but theoretically for those at some point we do have the ability to recover them. For dedicated servers, not so much.

If that's your vote then it's settled. I was mostly thinking of you for some reason when I considered not doing immediate wipe on termination.

I like these new ethernet cables. I'll probably 3D print some clips but for now I'm just using the twist ties they came with… behold, a small portion of the E5’s
I’ve decided to just do one power cable each and let you pay a setup or monthly fee if you want a second. Then depending on how well IPMI works over LAN, we’ll either do a dedicated IPMI or 2x1G LAN. Maybe both. Later. Soon. Maybe.
But what happend to PSU cable?
Why different slots?
Why different colours?!
It makes even less sense if I explain it. We do have plenty of cables of the same color and length. I could have just done them the same.
This doesn't answer your question, but I spent a good amount of time figuring out where to buy bulk power cables. I finally found the best deal, bought them, then maybe a day later I accidentally found a random website that was selling them for like $0.30 to $0.70 each, with free shipping. They kept mentioning how customs is covered so I figured it would at the very least take a month to get here. I was mostly expecting to just get scammed, but we now have like I don't know ... 300 power cables, and they shipped them in like 8 different packages for some reason, there's no way what we paid even covered shipping costs.

Being said that, I always wipe my disks before termination.
Edit: Wait… did I leave my previous dedis with data? Oh well, I'm pretty sure there was nothing important in there. There wasn't… right?

For some reason I remember something else, maybe it was a VPS but I remember there being a lack of data.
By the way let me know when I can perform power maintenance on your server. It has a long power cable and it's been bothering me. Actually I'll just schedule it and tag everyone, I think most of the servers in the first cabinet need to be tidied up.

I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.
