  • Looks like it's time to create a free migration plugin!

So who's going to do it?

On a more serious note, I guess it makes sense that plugin developers are asking for money. If you are making money of your WP site, they want a slice of it; and if you are not, well, then you dont matter to them.

Too bad I kinda never got around to making any WP plugins, even when I was working with PHP scripts...

    Thanked by (1)bikegremlin

Never make the same mistake twice. There are so many new ones to make.
It’s OK if you disagree with me. I can’t force you to be right.

I dislike the shadiness of it.
The "free" plugins that hamper core functionality until you pay.
The plugin search and promotion on WP.org that pushes those who've paid the bribes, basically.

Zeitgeist I guess - that's how it is now.
And I thought my guarantee was scammy! LOL :)

Well, wordpress "used" to be a free and opensource blog alternative to sites like Blogger, LiveJournal and Xanga. Before wordpress got popular, Moveable Type used to be the most popular blogging platform, but it had very restrictive licensing changes. So people loved wordpress.

Now wordpress is the only real one left and without proper competition, they are free to switch their model to mostly commercial. I mean the first site i got while searching for wordpress on google was wordpress.com... The "real" one is wordpress.org, which doesn't even show up until the 6th result on my search engine... So ya, money won over.

Also, take a look at this:

24 results, does not match search:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/backup/?plugin_business_model=community

    72 results, matches search:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/backup/?plugin_business_model=commercial

Moreover, the "community" plugins dont even show up on a regular search at all, so it's not worth the time spent to create the plugin. I see most people make their wordpress plugins available on github instead of listing it on WP, so maybe give that a try?
