AWS Down

Hurrah! That's about 20% of the World's hackers/crackers/scanners/spammers out of action.
To the legit businesses that use AWS, it serves them right for effectively sponsoring the nefarious activities that abound on AWS. It hammers home that providers don't enforce terms and conditions, when it comes to network activity.
Long may it last!

Now, can the same happen for Hetzner et al - one can only hope?

I'm noticing spam from firebaseapp, so looks like these guys (Google Cloud?) need to be nuked too. Grr.
(MXRoute doesn't automatically flag 'em as spam but does with my cron task notifications - go figure.)

I'm glad I'm still old school and no IOT devices, I don't need AI watching me even though I swear the wifes alexa in the kitchen is keeping an eye on me, I just say "alexa shut up" when it randomly starts talking...

So you keep a AWS IoT device that records all you conversations and sends it to third party vendors for quality audit and still call yourself "old school"? And calling it "wife's" isn't gonna help your case here.

I don’t really have an issue with IoT devices as long as they work fully locally and have a failsafe mode to run completely offline.

Both my LG dishwasher and Samsung washing machine do exactly that. They’re "smart" enough to let me set washing profiles, get notifications when a cycle’s done, or when something needs attention (like high load, empty detergent, or drum cleaning reminders). But if the internet goes down, everything still works perfectly. The profiles are stored locally, the dials still let you choose them, and the messages show right on the display. That’s the kind of IoT I actually like. Smart, but not needy.

Now, if a device stops working just because some random server on the other side of the planet goes offline or the company decides it’s "end-of-life"? That’s not smart tech — that’s tech made for dumb people.

If they have an offline mode its IOT anymore. They are made for people that think that craps cool until it breaks and believe me they WILL break.

If it’s a fully online device, it’s only as good as the server it depends on. The moment the company goes bankrupt or decides it’s “no longer supported,” your fancy smart gadget becomes a very expensive paperweight.

Most of these companies love throwing everything onto AWS because, you know, “CLOUD!” Management loves the buzzword. You know what they don’t love? The bill. And when that bill gets too high, guess what goes first? Yep, the server your device relies on. If it’s not making money, it’s getting shut down.

And since many IoT companies don’t bother adding a proper subscription model, the whole thing is basically guaranteed to die in a few years (if not the first year).

That’s why I avoid any "cloud-connected" or "always-online" junk. If it can’t function without the internet, it’s not smart. It’s just waiting for its funeral.

    My robotic mop a a la roomba…
Has an app apparently to map out my apartment/ then run in auto mode. But the app sends data to Chinese servers. I haven’t used it in the past ~3 years of using the robotic cleaner…

Don’t understand logic of relying on Internet for mopping. Where the data goes is secondary

Alexa never "thinks". AI do not "think", they take input, processes it through their neural network and outputs whatever makes logical sense to it based on it's training data. And just like programs, if it encounters a case it cant make sense of, it'll output garbage...

They use their servers to process and optimize the routing. Cheaper then doing it locally as they can shove cheapest controllers in the robotic vacuum/mop. It works fine unoptimized so ignore it.

  • There's a difference between someone who is a technology enthusiast, and someone who realizes just how hokey the entire damn thing is since it's farmed out to the cheapest (and often worst) coders.

I wouldn't have Internet at home anymore, but you can only watch so many DVDs when snowed in. I broke down and got Based AI Raped Will Stancil service because it was offered at roughly what I was paying for 4G service.

Weird to be able to stream high quality videos- since the last time I actually cared, everything has ads- Prime, Hulu, etc. So I can do without. At least my system updates don't take hours aymore.

Agreed if I did not do things online or could get more channels other than news ones I would not even have internet either. None of what they are doing is "new" it is all rehashed from things we did as kids. I call the new "AI" a glorified AIM chatbot and it is not far off.
