Email being sent to everyone opted in to platform updates, I thought I would post it here for maximum coverage.

Important: Service changes in 7 days

With around 5,000 active users on the platform, usage of our Network Disk, Email Relay, and SQL Offload services has remained in single figures across all three. Given the maintenance overhead these carry into future major releases of TierHive, we have decided to retire them so we can focus more on the core product.

In 7 days the following will be removed:

  • All Network Disks will be detached and deleted

  • All Email Relay accounts, domains, and addresses will be removed

  • All SQL Offload databases will be deleted

Please back up any data and make alternative arrangements before the deadline. After 7 days all data associated with these services will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

The resources freed up by retiring these services are being reinvested into improvements for all users:

  • The port ranges previously reserved for network disks will be reallocated, giving all users up to 5 additional NAT IPv4 ports (6 in total including your fixed SSH port)

  • VPS backups will become independent of the VPS itself. If you delete a VPS your backups will be retained and can be restored to any VPS at any time, essentially moving your disk to cold storage

  • We are introducing a discount for powered-off VPS instances. We are still finalising the exact amount and will share the details before it goes live

  • We will continue to whitelist all major outbound email relay services and are considering a process for requesting whitelisting of less common personal relay servers in future

    I think it would be cool to write recipes for setting up email relay VPS, some sort of easy NAS server, offloaded SQL VPS. Any user who actually needs those services, can then just roll their own. :smile:

    We probably need bigger incentives for that, there are tons of them but most are private.

    Since you already have a reverse proxy, how about a pre-configured user content domain for lazy people/testing/temporary use?

    For example: $USERNAME.userhive.com

    Those that want to use their own domain can still do so, those that just want to spin something up real quick don't need to futz with DNS.

    yeah I have a few stupid domains, I probably wont use the main one, i have had pop2.me for an age, maybe I finally put it to use.

    Excellent. Auto-assigned user domain will have the added benefit of never having to look up any IP addresses, even for temporary VMs.
