Ah, finally someone using the original cinnamon. I always see people use the "thicker" bark cassia cinnamon (Chinese cinnamon) and not the original thin bark ceylon cinnamon...

    Hy there folks

I wish to announce that, as of today here on LES, @HOST_C_Padawan is joining the team and will be handling promotions and keeping in touch with you guys whenever I'm unavailable. ( yeah I know, I am kinda absent....... :3 )

Lately we managed to get some pretty nice implementation projects, and they require a lot of my attention. Unfortunately a day has only 24 hours and it turns out I don't have enough hours to do everything myself, so I decided to expand the team.

I'm confident he will take good care of all of you. I just ask that you have a little patience with him at the beginning. His English skills are still fairly basic, so there will be a healthy amount of translation software involved in your conversations for a while. That probably means a few funny mistakes here and there. ( I will underline "few" here =) =) =) )

Please don't beat the crap out of him during the first week... the second week is a different story. B)

To kick things off, @HOST_C_Padawan will be posting his first promotion announcement tomorrow (if I remember correctly). Let's see how it goes! ;) =)

THX fellas, and see you soon.

    Cheers!

    Hey everyone,

    Thanks for the introduction. :)

Yes, I am the new Padawan around here and I will try to help with Host-C promotions, updates and community questions when the main account is busy fighting real-life implementation monsters.

My English is not perfect yet, so I may use translation tools from time to time. If something sounds strange, funny or too robotic, feel free to point it out. I will not take it personally. I am here to learn, improve and keep things clear.

I will do my best to keep our offers transparent:

    clear specs
    clear prices
    clear renewal terms
    no hidden conditions
    no comment required for coupons
    no weird marketing tricks
Today I'm posting our first LES-focused promotion. It's a small weekly campaign where LES members can help guide which Host-C products enter the next discount rotation.

Please be kind during the first week. :-)
Starting from week two, I accept reasonable abuse. :D

Thanks for having me here, and I'm looking forward to talking with you all.

    Cheers,

    Ha, fair questions! :)

My English: writing is "google translate carefully double-checked", reading is actually fine — I can read tickets, docs, and roast threads without much trouble. Writing under pressure is where I sometimes sound like a Yoda who studied marketing.

Despicable Me without subtitles? Easy mode. The Minions speak their own language anyway, so technically nobody understands 30% of that movie, English or not. We're all equally lost together. :D

Anime/manga — yes, absolutely. I was going to say I'm still "training arc" level, but let's be honest, with my English I'm more "comic relief side character" than "main protagonist." Give me a few more episodes (weeks) and maybe I level up to fluent.

Thanks for the warm welcome, this community roasts nicer than my code reviews. 😄

Great. So, you're just not fluent at converting your thought to English. So, I hope you enjoy the jokes & meta.
Btw, I forgot to ask your boss about the components pricing. Has there been any meaningful drop to RAM/NVME/HDD since our last conversation? I think I could help if he's fine with cheap used ddr4. Please convey the last part immediately.

Ha, exactly — my brain writes perfectly good Romanian-shaped English and my fingers just YOLO it into the keyboard. Glad the jokes land anyway. 😄

On the serious part — good question, I don't have pricing numbers on me (Padawans don't get server room access yet), but I'll pass it straight to the boss today and come back with an actual answer instead of guessing.

It's understandable to make grammatical mistakes, especially when you're unable to think in English. My suggestion is to watch more English TV or Netflix shows.

No worries. There's the baseline. After many conversations later, I arrived to the conclusion that RO vendor is charging hefty premium.

No meaningful drop, yet that totally depends on what time-frame you use for that statistic.

Personally I tend to look at a 3-year window, because that's what a healthy market should allow you to do.

From where I'm sitting 2023 to 2026 I honestly don't see the "hardware got cheap" story people keep repeating.

    • energy prices x~2
    • gas price x1.4
    • hdd prices x2, yet back in 2023 a 14TB or 18TB drive was "wow", today it should be :mundane" capacity wise, yet, the 18TB drives cost almost double what they were 3 years ago, hmm, nice. And for a storage provider, well, that is a big hit.
    • nvme prices x2-4
    • memory prices depending on make and model can be as high as x4-x6

But when I'm buying enterprise hardware in volume from suppliers and not picking the occasional eBay deal, the overall total is nowhere near what it was a few years ago.

So sincerely, @rpqu, how does it look from your side? As to me it looks like an overall x2 expense wise. Not to mention the day to day living costs got higher, so that means more expensive day to day operations with staff, contractors, shipping companies and so on.

You can cut corners if you wish to do so:

    • Raid5 in 12-24 Storage units - that would be no where dumb, but whatever works =)
    • Stick to old generation cpu's like the E5V3/4 platform - yet that will just eat KW for breakfast while you pay the premium on DDR4 ECC that can be used on XSG 2 or 3
    • Oversell 1vCore x3-x4

Now none of the above are for us, and i will really not comment o what others do, that is not my place.

I hardly see how you can deliver a good product at the price of 2023 or 2024 today.

Well, compared to the last time we have had long conversations. So, that'd be around March- April this year.
    1. Today: New 1X- low 2X TB HDD went down from peak $30/TB to around $26-27/TB. The new RAM doesn't budge much, but used market does.
    2. Next 6-12 months: Likely to go lower, but that depends on whether hyperscaler could raised debt or not.
    3. 3 years from now: Used AI-inference gears will flood the market. AMD likely to use DDR6. NVME price reduction depends on overall memory demand.

My expenses also gone up. Compared to earlier this year, my grocery bill went up by at least 20%. Energy and gas bill went up drastically. I don't think there's any country that isn't struggling with living cost crisis.

As for capacity addition, I don't think there's other way than embracing DDR4, at least until 3 years from now. Even when it means putting heat radiator

Fair worry, noted. 😅 Quick reassurance though: renewal is the normal listed price, not some inflated "gotcha" number — so worst case you're exactly where you'd be without the promo.

I'll come back with real numbers in a month or so. If it's just a revolving door, I'd rather admit it than pretend.

@Jab said: Can you please report after a month or so how the weekly promo goes as I personally think non-recurring deals is like a suicide in LE* lands :D

I do agree with you on that, but I'd rather promise uptime and continuity than put a service on the market only to withdraw them 6–12 months later because everyone's "hunch" that prices would return to normal never backfired.

You can also cancel anytime by the way, hence the offer is for monthly based payments/subscription.

I've never liked making business decisions based on "it should happen." I'd rather work with the reality I have today, and right now, these are the prices we can sustainably offer.

Until the market changes, I think we all need to adjust to the reality around us. Continuing to run 20%,- 40% recurring promotions simply because "things might hopefully go back to normal" doesn't strike me as the wisest long-term strategy. - yet I might be wrong here. =)

Don't get me wrong, guys, at the end of the day, either I make enough on a service to cover my costs, invest back into the infrastructure, and earn some profit, or there's very little point in offering it.

If it only creates work, support tickets, and operational headache while barely breaking even I rather then chose option B: just power them off and wait it out, as of today, it saves me more then I earn on a 40% recurring discount sold services.

    EDIT:

Don't take what I wrote above as me being skeptical or trying to be an ass. I'm simply being as honest as I can.

The reason is that I keep seeing comments across different forums from people who genuinely believe this situation will pass quickly. Yet when I look at actual sales numbers and current market pricing, they tell a very different story. ( we are also ~10 moths in a general x2-x3 price hike, that is not something normal )

If you zoom out a little, this entire pricing game is being played by companies with very deep pockets. As long as they're willing to outspend/fight each other, manufacturers have very little incentive ( none I would say ) to lower prices in any meaningful way.

That leaves the smaller players like us and many others to rely more heavily on the used market. And if everyone starts chasing the same DDR4 servers, enterprise SSDs, and other second-hand hardware, demand will rise... and so will prices.

So again, I'm not trying to spread doom or end of the world here, I am simply sharing how I see the market today, based on what I'm buying, what I'm paying, and what I'm seeing firsthand.

I just don't want people to get fooled by the smoke and mirrors you sometimes see in online discussions.

    Cheers!
