Things happened, life, CVE's, work, and time and resources were diverted, so it's been a bit slow but a big push was made over the last week to get almost everything finsihed up.

There are still a few things to do that really need to be fully tested on a live VPS for optimisation and a few tiny but important plugins to finish that would also benefit from being live.

I was just about to spin up another VPS on hetzner to probably end up taking over as the main LES server, then I see that the prices went up +300% they are charging around $20 now for a fairly basic 2GB VPS, its a bit silly, sorry hetzner... you are not LE* anymore, so we need to move.

Looking for recommendations, currently LES lives in Germany, yet looking at traffic patterns, about 70% is north america based, so I am thinking the best option is to look for East Side USA, part of me kind of likes the idea of Ashburn... feels like a good home for old internet things

Does not have to be Ashburn but that would be a bonus, I probably would not want to get any further west than Dallas, though.

Looking for strong recommendations, I was going to put it on quickpacket, but they only do dedicated servers and it feels like LES should really be running on a VPS.

Updates.

Lots of other Ui fixes and theme fixes and also some standardisation, side bar has been updated, more for trending and offers, and a lot of irrelevant or duplicated UI stuff has been removed.

Theme toggles on the top bar now, no password needed, as well as a slider, if you want none of the animations or anything related to karma that has a visual impact, you can have it.

The support system and blog system is built directly into vanilla now also.

It's not really THAT different to how it is now, at the core, it is the foundation and groundwork for a much more self-moderating community; not everything connected to that is in, yet, but the foundation for that to happen is, once live it will become easier to do these updates and have a better test environment.

Once V2 is live, I will start to drop some of the old resources and drop the price, google adverts are still enabled for none logged in users, so far that gave a total of £5.20 over 24 days, so probably about £6.50 by the end of the month.

On that basis, I will be looking for ways to better monetise, probably either in the promoted listings or buy a square type of things, prices will be low, and karma can be used, and it will be open to everyone, but I will try to keep it tasteful and non-flashy as much as possible.

Before any of that, though, I need to work on the numbers, or why would anyone be here

Also as a heads up, part of this rejig is going to make a little bit of a conflicting mess with the old tag system and the new karma system, they can both exist together but it looks a bit funny, I will be starting to remove tags that are not really in use much like the senpi and content creator / writer tags, and reduce the old tag system to functional only.

@yoursunny troll will be turned into a 1 of 1 karma badge, only he will have, unless he decides to pass it on (That will be possible)

We will also have host-specific decorations if you want to show support for specific hosts.

So at some point, without much warning, this place will go into maintenance mode or just offline while I panic and realise what I forgot to consider when migrating everything, hopefully not more than a couple of hours.

That's all for now.

Welcome to OCD Benchmarking Thread

Only in here, benchmark walks. The rest is talk.

When sharing/posting YABS results, please use the proper code tag/formatting (``) just so that the results are displayed neatly.

In addition to the above, it would be very much appreciated if you were to include details such as the Provider, Plan, Location and Price. Other details like date of purchase can be included as well, or just indicate if it's a deal bought on a special occasion, i.e., Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Independence Day etc.

If you're posting results of a custom built machine, or something locally of your own, it would be nice if you could share details of your build and/or hardware - just to serve as an "FYI" for the community members.

Here's an example of the format you can use to share your YABS results:

Hi!
I'm looking for 3 (or 4) servers in Dallas, US.

For each one:

Different node.

RAM 4gb

CPU: 2+ cores. Something more powerful than an E5v4.

Storage: 80gb - 100gb SSD or NVMe.

Network: 1gbps minimun

Private network would be nice.

$5/m per server is fine?

I'm trying to build a database cluster because I like to suffer.

My compute resources are in Dallas so I can't use another location. Unless I move my dedicated servers... but where? and it would more expensive these days... can we kill AI?

I was about to post a new offer, really more to provide some updates, it's probably not good, @msatt was probably right

I decided to just post a single TierHive thread instead. I might still post some offers and specials from time to time, but for now, I will keep it contained to a single thread for updates etc, as most offer threads seem to turn in to that anyway.

So what's been going on recently?

Updates in live bullet points to keep it simple

IPv6 was added, its free, you get 1 x /64 per location and can then add individual addresses from that /64 to any VPS in that location, elastic IPv6 coming based on user take-up over 6 months, Current user take-up on IPv6 is 1.5% This is measured by the number of users that have allocated at least 1 IPv6 address to a VPS.

Users can now allocate 5 additional NAT ports in addition to the SSH port.

Users can now manage the internal forwarding of ports, so for example, if you are allocated 2345 you can have that forward to 8080 internal if you want.

You can now download your SSL certificate from the HAProxy directly. I don't fully understand why anyone wants this, but it's a very popular request.

We have introduced burst buckets on IOPS and Network as of today for network and disk, you now can now double your tier limit for 5 seconds continuously, any VPS that existed before today will need to change their network and disk tier down and up again to gain access to this (Sorry, it's a pain in the ass to do restrospectivley) so if medium tier is on 300mbit for example you will be able to do 600mbit for 5 seconds sustained, then when you idle again below 300mbit your bucket empties and you can burst up again on demand. (Hope I explained that ok)

You can now copy the IP, Port or whole ssh string separately in the UI, aparently that was annoying for Windows users.

Crypto mining detectors are now deployed on all nodes, load dropped globally by 50% in the first hour haha.. just wow.

We decided to remove the network disk options and the sql service, and the mail relay, even fewer people use this than use IPv6 so it's not really worth the code maintenance and complexity. It might come back one day, for now its not worth it, you will still be able to attack backups as network disks.

We plan to decouple the backups from the VPS so that you can put a VPS disk image on cold storage.

Added an FAQ which is being built following support tickets to provide real answers without needing to open a ticket, but you can if you want anyway.

Things we are playing with now that may make it out of the sand pit version.

A static hosting layer, which will likely just be free to any user with a positive balance, details still in progress.

We want to start charging less for shut down VPS, obviously we still maintain the mesh elements, the disk/data, and the firewall and port reservations and have to account for the fact that you can boot it at any time, but initially I am thinking 50% discount for powered off servers, it helps us keep it cheap if you make the effort to shut down when not using it.

unikernels - not me playing with this, I think its an interesting idea but lets see where it goes

Bring your own image automation, this will have 2 modes, give us the key or password for another running VPS somewhere else and we will try to import it, obviously its best if thats in rescue mode but not absolutely needed, and just give us the url to a qcow2 or raw image and we will do the rest.

long long long term, personal project I am working on multiplexing VNC for audio into a custom html5 client using a single WebSocket, but this is actually sort of for another project but would be cool in TierHive.

It makes me very sad how few people have enabled DHCP or mess with the DHCP options for your scopes, it took me bloody ages to get it working over the whole /24 regardless of location, so I will probably end up being free, if people still don't use it, ah well, its done, nothing new to add.

network page for network tests and mesh status.

And thats it, thats my update, probably missed 100 minor things but at least I have a thread to do it in now.

FAQ:
Q: Do you allow gameservers?
Because most gameservers generally attract (D)DoS attacks, we currently do not allow them on our network.
This also applies to voiceservers such as Teamspeak and Mumble.
Q: Can I run a VPN?
Private VPN servers are perfectly fine with us. Public ones, however, are not.
Q: What’s your refund policy?
We do have a 30-day refund policy for your first service with us.
Q: What payment methods are accepted?
We accept payments via PayPal.
Q: Do you have a test IP/file?
Yes.
Q: Do you offer instant setup?
Servers on this offer are instantly provisioned, subject to stock availability.
Q: Why my order was marked as fraud?
The usual reason for an order, being marked as fraud is if you place it from a VPN/Server IP. We do not allow such kind of orders, so if you intend to order with a VPN, it will be marked as fraud. If you are on vacation/holiday and live in a different country, please contact us prior to ordering.

🎉 5 years in business & 5000 active VPS! Double celebration, double coupons!

To celebrate 5 years of servers.guru and our 5000th VPS, we are running two coupons at the same time — pick the one that suits you:

2026_5_5000_50_LES → 50% OFF your first invoice (one time)

2026_5_5000_LES → 30% OFF recurring : the discount stays for the lifetime of your service

On top of that, every yearly payment gets 2 months free : 12 months for the price of 10, and it stacks with the coupons!

Both coupons work on our 🇳🇱 Netherlands (1 Gbps, unmetered 1 Gbps & 10 Gbps), 🇺🇲 USA - West / Salt Lake City (10 Gbps), 🇸🇬 Singapore (1 Gbps) and 🇨🇦 Montreal (1 Gbps & unmetered 1 Gbps) plans.

In this thread we request that you tell us your experience with VirMach.

I made this thread so that people can say what they want about VirMach's service. That includes the good, the bad, and the ugly. You want to say the same thing ten times, knock your socks off. I don't know how much good it will do, but go right ahead.

Where I am drawing the line, for both sides, is personal attacks. The people who think VirMach is the worst host in the world can voice that, but let us try to reasonable in how we express that. If you attack a subject that is fine. If you attack on a personal level I am getting less comfortable with that as time goes on. This also goes for the people that think VirMach is ok as well. Let's stop attacking the people that don't, no matter how wrong you may think they are. We are all members of the same community let's figure out a way to act civil to each other even if we don't agree on this particular subject.

If you make an personal attack on another member that in my opinion crosses the don't be a dick line, your comment will be removed.

The current state of things VirMach

The below is not to be taken as official VirMach policy and is just provided as a way to assist members that do not want to try and find the related information in a long thread. I will try to keep this up to date. If you find obvious errors, please DM me.
For official VirMach policy please see the VirMach website.

PayPay Charge Backs

Under no circumstances should you initiate a charge back, or dispute a payment, through PayPal unless you understand that this action will cause your account with VirMach, and all the services in it, to be suspended permanently. You will also no longer be able to purchase any new services with VirMach in the future. IMO Just don't do it.

Flash sale provisioning

If you have purchased a VirMach flash sale VPS, it has not been provisioned, and still shows "Pending" in your billing panel screen. You should wait for your VPS to be provisioned. Opening a ticket regarding a pending VPS and/or posting your ticket number in this thread will probably lead to your VPS purchase being canceled and the purchase amount being refunded to account credit.

UPDATE

@VirMach said on Jan 25th, 2023:
Thank you everyone who was patient and sorry for the last bit of these flash specials taking so long to activate. I finally got some functional code to be able to activate these efficiently so that's why they were done quickly today. It's not that we were ignoring it, or had any bad intentions, it was just several failed iterations of solutions being worked on in the background.

Anyway, all* flash specials are provisioned now. There's still vserverid issue for most of the recent activated ones, which just means you won't be able to access the full SolusVM control panel yet, everything else should work. And some activated today are still waiting on due date to be adjusted. So please do not make tickets for these two issues.

*A little exception to this, the following have not been provisioned:

12 quantity for DALZ010 offer, 4GB RAM / 4 Core / 130GB Disk

1 12 quantity for NYCB041 offer (node is having problems still)

However, at this point in time, if you already haven't, feel free to contact us if:

There's any missing orders, make sure to provide all details such as invoice ID and transaction ID, so we can refund you

Yours is paid and still pending or in a weird halfway state like cancelled but paid, etc.

Incorrect specifications provisioned (these are super rare, maybe 1 or 2 out of each 1,000 so please make 100% sure first.)

For #3 if we get dozens of tickets claiming this, they'll all just be closed because it means people are reporting it improperly in which case you'll have to use LES support instead.

Regarding $0.25 3 Month VPS

VirMach said on Jan 15th: The $0.25 orders, there's still hundreds left. So far we got one $0.25 chargeback and maybe a hundred tickets from people asking for updates. Already covered but we didn't expect nearly 1,000 orders all in Tokyo with like half of them multiple accounts. I mean I guess I could say we did expect that as a possibility and it happened, so these are just being mass refunded. It's taking longer because I'm actually double flagging down a lot of people for their behavior here, like signing up for multiple accounts specifically to order a bunch of the $0.25 specials is obviously not okay and creating 3-4 tickets screaming about it is also something we're going to make sure sticks with your account in the form of a note.

Migrations

Currently paid migrations, with and without data, are not available between VirMach locations using the migration button in the billing panel. Although there has been no official statement by VirMach regarding this, I expect that after recent sales have been provisioned, and/or new nodes are brought on line this option may return for some locations. VirMach has stated that migrations to Tokyo will not be available until after more nodes arrive at the DC and are setup. There has not been any date given for when this should be expected.

rDNS aka PTR DNS records

Currently rDNS is not available in any location. There has been no date given by VirMach as to when rDNS would be available in the future. Consequentially members should not expect rDNS to be available from VirMach.

TOS Guide Lines

@VirMach said on January 23rd, 2023:
Easiest answer is if you have 1% or the node's dedicated disk amount, you get 1% of all I/O operations over like a day. That's not what it is, but the easiest rule of thumb to communicate. So 20GB on 2TB drive = 1%

2TB NVMe drive Gen3/Gen4, look up what it's capable of for the type of operations you do.

So if it can do like 500,000 IOPS for your operation type/size, then that's 5,000 IOPS in the example of having 1% share of the disk, there are 86,400 seconds in a day so 432,000,000 operations a day for that example of that specific type of operation. Anything more, we may decide to be lenient to some level where possible automatically.

Most cases if you get that message you're doing a lot more.

And of course over a shorter period of time, let's say 10 minutes out of 24 hours, there are 144x 10 minute chunks in 24 hours so let's say you do 10x more than that, it's fine as long as it's not more than 14x 10 minute chunks that do 10x more since any more and you'd average out more for the day. However, if you do 2 x 10 minute consecutive chunks where you're doing like 50x more that could still be problematic since at that point you're most likely also breaking the load and CPU fair use policies. Basically if any of that is confusing just refer to my first sentence and do your own math/conceptualization of it.

FAQ About VirMach Issues

Q. Is there a workaround for 'Invalid vserverid or username' when trying to access the SolusVM panel ?
A. Currently there is no workaround for this issue. It must be resolved by VirMach. Previous workarounds no longer work due to changes made by VirMach.

Q. 2FA is not working and I keep needing to use the backup code to get in to the billing panel. Why is your 2FA broken ?
A. Unsubscribe from 2FA and then logout. Log back in to the billing panel and setup 2FA again. Make sure to make a note of your new backup code.

If you are bored and wanna play around with a LXC container: https://microlxc.net/
Currently AU, JP, LA and CH are available, you can pick between 128 and 256MB packages.

As usual some requirements apply:

Your account needs to be 6 months old

You need to have at least 50 Posts

You need to have at least 50 Likes

If you meet these, you can go on the website, and to verify that you are you, you need to post the token that will be given to you in this thread. The Bot will do the rest.

If stuff goes well, it will be publicly soon.
Please report bugs and suggestions.

PS: IPv6 is DHCP based in AU & CH but JP & LA needs Static config, which is automatically configured on Debian & Devuan but not on CentOS/Ubuntu needs to be done by hand yet. You can find your IPv6 in the Panel just substract -1 for the Gateway.

There are rumblings on Reddit that the free tier has been and is being limited to less than half the allowance.

Also that it's a soft limit so AWS in crack style you start getting billed for overages.

https://docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/FreeTier/freetier_topic-Always_Free_Resources.htm

Documentation has been updated and a few chat screen it's on Reddit show that the terms and calculator will follow.

So just a heads up, oracle are not known for playing nice, this could be nothing but just in case, manage your usage or you could end up with a nasty bill.

Thought I would post this so it can be updated as we go.

Could still be nothing.

Edit: now confirmed

You will start being billed from the 15th if you are over the NEW free tier ... enjoy your 4 days notice.

DragonWebHost is introducing two new permanent discount codes: 50% off for students and 50% off for UK registered charities, available across our web hosting and email hosting plans.

Students get 50% off with code STUDENT50 - just verify with your
.ac.uk
or
.edu
email address.

UK Charities get 50% off with code CHARITY50 - confirm your charity number via a support ticket and we'll get it applied.

Both codes apply to full priced plans and are permanent, not a limited-time thing. They don't stack with LES15 or any other code, so if you're eligible for one of these, use it instead as it works out cheaper on most plans.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

Hey LES community,

Some of you saw the original Hypervisor V2 thread when we launched it as a lightweight KVM control panel. Big update: it grew up. Hypervisor.io is now a full self-hosted KVM cloud, the kind of stack you would reach for OpenStack or CloudStack to build, minus the multi-server control plane and the ops headache. One master, as many slave nodes as you like. Provisioning, the cloud-services layer, and billing all in the same box.

The bit we are most proud of: The AI assistant. Not a docs chatbot, it actually provisions. You type "spin up 3 VMs behind a load balancer with SSL" or "resize my Postgres and add a replica" and it reads your real infra and executes through the same API the UI uses. No one else in this category ships that.

Stuff competitors just do not ship (full sheet: https://hypervisor.io/compare/):

The rest of the kit:

Compute: full KVM lifecycle, live migration, HA monitoring, VNC + browser SSH, GPU passthrough, cloud-init, IPv4 + IPv6

Networking: VPC (VXLAN overlay), NAT gateways, VPN gateways, security groups, IP sets, HAProxy load balancers with SSL

Data services: managed databases (MySQL / MariaDB / Postgres + replicas + PITR), tenant S3 object storage, managed Kubernetes + autoscaler

Backups: streaming backups (S3 / SFTP / FTP / rclone) + volume snapshots with point-in-time rollback

Billing: built in (Stripe / PayPal / Razorpay) with metering, multi-currency + tax invoicing, or run WHMCS / Blesta / HostBill / Paymenter

Automation: full REST API (OpenAPI docs) plus the AI assistant, so anything the UI does, you script or just ask for

30-day free trial, full platform, no card.

Not here to bash anyone, Virtualizor and Solus are solid and OpenStack/CloudStack scale huge. The difference is we ship the cloud-services layer plus billing plus an AI that runs it as one product. If you just need VM provisioning, the classics do fine. If you want the AWS-style stack on your own metal with invoicing and an AI assistant already wired, that is us, running the same day.

Hey LES,

I'm Michael, I run DragonWebHost and OnePoundEmail, been doing hosting stuff for 12+ years now. I've got some time available for whitelabel support slots for other hosting companies who want their tickets handled without hiring someone in-house.

What I do:

Whitelabel support - I answer tickets as your company, customers never know it's outsourced

Management services - one-off or monthly, cPanel/DirectAdmin/Plesk

Website migrations

Blesta setup and support

Software installs

Everything in-between

Whitelabel pricing:

£50/mo - Up to 50 tickets - Buy Now

£99/mo - Up to 100 tickets - Buy Now

Whitelabel pricing hasn't changed since 2022 - I am planning to revise it in 2027. Lock in now at the current rate and it's grandfathered for as long as you stay subscribed.

Also available (one-off or ongoing):

Website Migration - £20 one-time (HTML/WordPress, includes files, databases, and email)

Software Installation - £20 one-time (Blesta/WHMCS/cPanel/Plesk/DirectAdmin/WordPress/Softaculous)

Website Management - £25/mo (single site, backups, plugin updates, general upkeep)

Server Management - £50/mo (cPanel/DirectAdmin/Plesk/custom panels, routine maintenance and support)

Why me: been running my own hosting brands for years so I actually get how support should work, not just doing it from the outside. 5.0 rating across Fiverr and direct clients, 2000+ clients served between everything I've worked on.

Site's here if you want to poke around: https://michaelcee.com

Happy to answer questions here or just drop me a ticket. Cheers!

Important sidenote: I operate written communication only. No teams meetings, no video calls, voice calls, etc.

Thundermail is an email service (with calendars and contacts as well). We want to provide email accounts to those who love Thunderbird, and we believe that we are capable of providing a better service than the other providers out there. Email that aligns with our values of privacy, freedom and respect of our users. No ads, no selling or training AI on your data – just your email and it is your email.

With Thundermail, it is our goal to create a next generation email experience that is completely, 100% open source and built by all of us, our contributors and users. Unlike the other services, there will not be a single repository where this work is done. But we will try and share relevant places to contribute in future posts like this.

The email domain for Thundermail will be Thundermail.com or tb.pro. Additionally, you will be able to bring your own domain on day 1 of the service.

TierHive in a nutshell is a NAT VPS, its KVM based, and a little bit different, every customer is assigned a /24 from 10.0.0.0/8 and your /24 works across all 12 locations, you can assign an IP to your VPS, and you get up to 10 NAT ports per VPS that forward from the external IP to any port you want on your VPS. If you want to use 80/443 externally, we have HAProxy, which can also handle SSL for you.

We only charge for what you use 1 hour in advance, if you shut down, you are only billed for the storage not the compute.

Sign up, add $3 (minimum) or use a voucher code, and then start creating VPS.

We also offer lifetime free tier static hosting for anyone who makes a single payment ever, and you get to use the credit from your payment on the VPS side of things anyway.

We now have around 30 public recipes for deploying everything automatically from WireGuard to Flarum to Laravel. You can see more on https://tierhive.com/ on the recipe marketplace scroller.

Read more here if you want to know about how it works in terms of allocations and limits https://tierhive.com/about.php

Still in Alpha, but fairly stable, late Alpha is probably the best description.

I run VM6 Networks. Got fed up watching my cPanel bill climb every time I won a customer, then being told I needed CloudLinux on top just to stop tenants reading each other's files. So I built my own panel.

It's called WebDeck. The free tier is a proper panel, not a demo.

Free tier

2 hosting accounts, 4 websites, and every single feature:

Account isolation and resource limits

All 48 one click apps

Free SSL, plus a free hostname with a trusted cert out of the box

DNS, mail, backups

WordPress manager

cPanel importer

Self healing

Updates and security patches

Nothing is crippled or held back. If 2 accounts and 4 sites suits you and no reseller features, keep it free forever and I'm happy.

Pro - £12/mo per server

Unlimited accounts, unlimited websites, resellers, white labelling, WHMCS module.

Flat fee. Host 10 accounts or 10,000, it's still £12.

Free for VM6 clients, licensed by IP, nothing to enter.

What's actually different

Isolation, built in and free. Every account is confined to its own site's files. Can't see other customers, can't hog the box. No CloudLinux licence needed.

I'll be straight though: this isn't CageFS. CloudLinux goes further and has years more hardening. Big host with hostile tenants, they earn their money. But for the tenant separation that matters day to day, WebDeck does it, and it's in the box rather than a second monthly bill.

Pick your own stack. LAMP, LNMP or LOMP. Apache, nginx or OpenLiteSpeed, same panel and same features either way. And you can switch a running server between them without rebuilding it. Most panels decide that for you.

It fixes itself. If a vhost goes missing, a cert's about to expire, a service dies or a config drifts, the panel notices, repairs it, and tells you what it fixed. You don't find out from a customer at 2am.

What's in it

Your choice of stack - LAMP, LNMP or LOMP. Apache, nginx or OpenLiteSpeed, same panel, same features either way. And you can switch a running server between them without rebuilding it. Most panels lock you to whatever they were built around.

Self healing - if a vhost goes missing, a cert's about to expire, a service dies or a config drifts, the panel notices, fixes it, and tells you what it fixed. You don't find out from a customer.

Isolation - every SFTP/SSH account confined to its own site's files. Can't see other customers, can't hog the box. Resource limits per account, optional process cage. No CloudLinux needed.

Websites - unlimited domains, subdomains and parked domains. Per site PHP version. Redirects, directory privacy, custom error pages.

One click apps - 48 of them. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Ghost, phpBB, Flarum, Moodle, Nextcloud, Matomo, Mautic, EspoCRM, PrestaShop, Magento, WHMCS, LimeSurvey and the rest.

WordPress manager - install, update core, plugins and themes, manage users, search and replace. Without touching wp-admin.

Email that lands - Postfix and Dovecot with SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up properly, reverse DNS sorted, autodiscover and autoconfig published. Mail relay support if you'd rather send through someone else.

DNS - authoritative PowerDNS with your own nameservers, full record editing. Or point a domain at external DNS if you'd rather.

SSL - Let's Encrypt with auto renewal, and a free hostname with a trusted cert the moment you install. No browser warning on your panel from minute one.

Databases - MariaDB with phpMyAdmin, single sign on.

Backups - local and remote, restic and rclone, scheduled. With a test restore button that actually proves they work.

PHP - multiple versions side by side, 65 modules toggled per site, ionCube, per site FPM pools.

Resellers - four roles, real quotas with overselling protection, and branding that cascades so your reseller's customers see your reseller's brand, not yours.

White label - your name, your logo, your colours, throughout the whole panel. Not a paid extra.

WHMCS module - sell hosting and resellers with automatic provisioning.

Migration - point the cPanel importer at a cpmove archive and it recreates the account properly. Sites, databases, email, DNS, cron.

Logs in the panel - live Apache, MariaDB, PHP, mail, DNS and FTP. No SSH needed.

Security - 2FA, fail2ban, firewall management, API keys, audit log.

Runs on

Debian, Ubuntu, Rocky, AlmaLinux. One command, six step wizard, running in minutes.

What I want from you

2.0 is new. Tested across all four distros and stable on my boxes, but it hasn't got a year of production behind it and I'd rather you knew that than found out.

Give it a go on a spare box and tell me what you think:

Bugs. Anything, however small. I fix fast, usually in the next release.

What's missing. I'd rather build what people actually want.

What's annoying. Six clicks where there should be two, bad wording, anything that made you sigh.

The pricing. Is £12 right? Are the free limits sensible? Tell me if I've got it wrong.

Slow Servers hosted on Secondhand Systems in Spokane, Washington, with (hopefully) Satisfactory Service.

Host servers are designed to be efficient and use less energy than they otherwise could. Datacenter building was built in the late 1800s and is locally owned. Very non-corporate, small scale operation that doesn't fund megacorps + AI expansion. Slow Servers is deliberately not the latest-and-greatest by any means.

Hosts run OpenBSD and VPSs are hosted under VMM. Unfortunately, this limits all plans to one vCPU. ECC DDR3 memory is utilized.

Plans are generally billed annually.

Routed /64 IPv6 allocations are included. IPv4 is $1.00/month extra.

$3/month: 768MiB of memory, 24GiB of disk, 384GB/month transfer

$4/month: 1GiB of memory, 32GiB of disk, 512GB/month transfer

$6/month: 1.5GiB of memory, 48GiB of disk, 768GB/month transfer

$8/month: 2GiB of memory, 64GiB of disk, 1TB/month transfer

$12/month: 3GiB of memory, 96GiB of disk, 1.5TB/month transfer

$16/month: 4GiB of memory, 128GiB of disk, 2TB/month transfer

$24/month: 6GiB of memory, 192GiB of disk, 3TB/month transfer

$32/month: 8GiB of memory, 256GiB of disk, 4TB/month transfer

$48/month: 12GiB of memory, 384GiB of disk, 6TB/month transfer

$64/month: 16GiB of memory, 512GiB of disk, 8TB/month transfer

Despite the low performance, I'm able to successfully run Bitcoin and Monero nodes. Even the SporeStack website and API is hosted on Slow Servers.

Guest OS Options:

OpenBSD

Debian

Alpine

All servers are currently served by a 100Mbit/sec uplink that is not yet very utilized. Once Slow Servers grows enough and start to see notable traffic on that connection, I'll upgrade to gigabit. The infrastructure is not yet fully redundant as far as network routing goes. RAID 1 is not utilized and backups are recommended for any important data (as they still would be with RAID 1.)

You can see pictures of most of the hosts and of the 1/3 cabinet on the website.

If you use Gemini, you can access the Gemini-native site: gemini://slowservers.net

Also available as a Tor Hidden Service: gemini://slowsvr7rgnkzuoma5byw34n2mkkg6v7g5q6qxqaihh7zikp5wn26fid.onion/

Of course, HTTPS is also available: https://slowservers.net/ (This is the link that most of you will probably use.)

And on the same Tor Hidden Service: http://slowsvr7rgnkzuoma5byw34n2mkkg6v7g5q6qxqaihh7zikp5wn26fid.onion/

For test IPs, you can use slowservers.net's AAAA/A records.

Provisioning is currently not automated. Expect orders to typically be fulfilled within 48 hours.

You can sign up via SSH and be given cryptocurrency payment instructions. You can even use the Tor Hidden Service for that process. Hosts also have Tor Hidden Service endpoints to connect via SSH for serial, start, and stop.

Some additional features:

SNIProxy, SOCKS, and IPv4 SSH port forwarding for IPv6-only servers.

Slave DNS.

Reverse DNS.

Free subdomains on ssvr.net.

Local, partial OpenBSD mirror.

This is certainly not a service for everyone, but I believe it fills a niche for some. Lots of other good providers out there.

If you have any questions, please ask!

Yes I am once again following the herd and doing what everybody else does by making a brand discussion thread I want to use this thread to post about the progress of OnePoundEmail (Now using this thread also for DragonWebHost and MakeMyKB as of 16th April 2026), any announcements or changes that happen and to get feedback along the way.

To catch you up to speed...

OnePoundEmail launched in 2022 as an MXroute reseller, offering SmallEmail for One Pound per month.

We slowly grew since then as understandably, I worked on regaining trust in the community having left the industry before.

We now have close to 300 registered users and would be happy to take on many many more.

In July 2023 I posted about some personal circumstances that led to a lack of attention to the brand. Extra help was contracted for the rest of that year, bills were settled in advance, subscriptions created where applicable, things looked a lot better.

In September 2023 I followed up and posted about plans to re-do the website, make the affiliate program better, possibly rebrand, make bigger packages, acquire more customers/brands and add some additional services.

I did manage to get most of that done. The website was updated, affiliate program enhanced and a couple extra packages added. On top of that, I reduced annual pricing, added discord and live chat, fixed some pesky issues, simplified the control panel navigation and added Crypto, EUR and USD payments.

We're now over a year after that post and have had a very successful Black Friday campaign, acquiring a stupid number of new customers, and it's time to use the higher number of users to our advantage and improve the service where possible.

Here are some base plans for 2025:

Completely fill the entire knowledgebase. I've taken some inspiration and asked for feedback about how to approach this, and have started to section it out. We have categories for starter information, DNS setup, transferring guides and troubleshooting. As well as the usual sales, billing, etc. The plan is to reformat every single article and add images. I've already started the formatting process on a few dozen.

On the topic of knowledgebase, each article will have a video equivalent. I do have a OnePoundEmail YouTube channel - it has a few guides on there. It gets 100s of views every month and I haven't touched it in almost 2 years. Time to change that.

Again sticking with the theme of documentation, I plan on publishing a full contingency plan. Everything from the potential of MXroute kicking me to the curb to me being fisted with a christmas tree (maybe not). The plan is to be 100% transparent with what would realistically happen in certain scenarios.

UK domain management. I started the application process with Nominet, only to realise I am not budgeting for the one-time and maintenance fees associated with that. It won't be worth it, so an alternative option for managing UK domains in the client portal will be implemented.

Launching a blog. I had a blog, somewhere. I will be making a new one for more general topics.

Rely less on promotional pricing. Black Friday has increased the client numbers by a lot. Discounts will be less frequent and hard hitting going forward to focus on stability and healthy growth.

There's lots more. But it's 2AM. I want to go to bed. Have this for now.

This week will mark the 4 year anniversary of OnePoundEmail.

I really appreciate the hundreds of you that signed up and tried the service, whether you stuck around or you moved on. This brand enabled me to get back into the hosting industry after the burnout of my past brand(s) and I'm now at a point where I've been running this brand longer than any of the ones before it. I'd like to keep going.

As many of you might know, I am kind of crazy with how many discounts I hand out. You also may know, I've been actively working on that behaviour to build something a bit healthier (and it's going pretty well). I would love nothing more than to offer a million TB of email storage for £1 per year, but alas we live in this reality.

So, here's the deal. The 3 Year Anniversary was 10GB for £9 per 3 years.

This time, for an extra £1, you get an extra year. Pretty convenient for a brand called OnePoundEmail, amirite?

The OnePoundEmail 4 Year Anniversary Package

10GB Email Storage

Unlimited Domains

Unlimited Accounts

Catch-All Enabled

Custom Control Panel (Or you can use DirectAdmin)

Crossbox Webmail

Roundcube Webmail

IMAPSync Migration Tool

400 Outbound/Hour

Order here: https://billing.dragonwebhost.com/order/config/index/special-offers/?group_id=14&pricing_id=9837

There are only 4 of these available.

OnePound.Email is a subsidiary of the DragonWebHost brand. All billing and support is handled via the all-in-one DragonWebHost portal. You can find the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy below.

Hello!

VPS Share

Would anybody be interested in sharing my free Linveo AMD Ryzen 9 9950X NetBSD VPS in Arizona? It's open to friends who want to help me learn.

Goals

Tonight I decided to (1) try some method of rolling release updates of NetBSD pkgsrc. For example, please see pkg_rolling-replace (mailing list, 2008 introduction), please see also the man page. I could use help figuring out the best method of rolling updates with pkgsrc.

Also, I think it might be fun to (2) see whether I can get 9vx working. I could use help with the code and the compiling on 64 bit NetBSD of the vx32 sandboxing library used by 9vx.

Maybe I could (3) try the X Windows installation from pkgsrc instead of the xsrc version, but I haven't looked into pkgsrc X, very much as yet.

Procedure

I'm beginning by wiping and reinstalling my NetBSD-current VPS at Linveo. The reinstall is from Linveo vmcontrol, which offers @cmeerw's NetBSD 10.1 image.

The process is installing NetBSD 10.1, then, with changes appropriate for 10.1, following the simple NetBSD 10 to NetBSD-current steps in Quick Recipe For Self-Compiled NetBSD-current On A Linveo VPS.

linveo# ftp -o - https://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-10.1/amd64/binary/sets/comp.tar.xz | progress -z tar xpf - -C /
linveo# which gcc
/usr/bin/gcc
linveo# cd /usr
linveo# mkdir obj src tools
linveo# mkdir /home
linveo# useradd -m -G wheel tom
linveo# passwd tom
Changing password for tom.
New Password:
Retype New Password:
linveo# chown tom obj src tools
linveo# su tom
linveo#

linveo$ pwd
/usr
linveo$ export CVSROOT="anoncvs@anoncvs.NetBSD.org:/cvsroot"
linveo$ export CVS_RSH="ssh"
linveo$ cvs checkout -A -P src
linveo$ cd src
linveo$ nohup ./build.sh -j 2 -O ../obj -T ../tools -U distribution && \
> nohup ./build.sh -j 2 -O ../obj -T ../tools -U kernel=GENERIC

I like
nohup
because it gives me a full transcript of all the terminal output and because I don't have to stay connected. Back in the old days I used to start a NetBSD-current build and then sleep. I don't remember a build which failed to complete, but there might have been one.

I will post again, later, or maybe tomorrow, about whether this build completes.

Happy patching day everyone.

https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-53359

Bit of a scary sounding one, my impression is that this is probably (for now) one of those ones where the effort is massive to exploit and to actually get root from a guest you have to calculate the displaced atoms from a gravitational wave while standing on 1 leg eating lemons.... But as with the batch of local privilege escalation exploits, it has existed for 10 years undetected.

So let's hope this does not bring a wave of similar findings and daily patching.

Basically if you have nested KVM enabled for guests, your hypervisors are vulnerable.

No exploit in the wild yet I think, but I am sure that will change.

I am exploring live patching for TierHive because frankly I don't want to reboot everything, but if I must, I will.

Please... Don't become a trend.
