Sad to see you go, thanks for the time it lasted. I had fun with the somewhat experimental way of idling my money, before actually spinning up a container and have fun with that in its own right. It is a pity to see that low cost just does not pay …

(Quote) ... and (Quote) is also very considerate. (Quote) ... and never had a problem with any of them. The (closed by now) NAT "mini" VPS in Japan was the first VPS I could afford, back then. Thanks for all the fish, it has been a ple…

Congrats, and thanks for taking on a thankless job ;-)

I'd recommend Peertube as well. Run it self hosted and let it sync your Youtube channel; you can replicate over multiple instances or have others federate your videos.

The verdict is out, it seems! Thanks all :-)

Fun concept! I was involved in a mobile provider (Limesco) that actively encouraged experimental usage like this. We didn't make it though, it's a though market catering to niche usage. In your case you wouldn't be the provider though, only the ho…

Just to be sure, as it's only implied, you're looking for IPv4, aren't you? Word has it that IP's in v6 are much easier to come by :-P

(Quote) What do you mean by "secret chats"? And "cloud chats"? As mentioned above, server side Matrix is distributed, federated and can be self hosted. Your clients exchange keys so they can decrypt the shared "room" i…

I use both XMPP and Matrix. The Matrix server is a lot heavier than an XMPP server, but the ecosystem is much wider with various clients for most platforms. If your goal is to have your family and friends in the same system later on, Matrix allows …

... ehh... Network routing? Misconfigured hostname/DNS? Shots in the dark; I (still) have no hands on NixOS experience, but once had a Linux box with time-out like behaviour on first try for numerous commands, and swift responses after that. I had …

That is a downtime reason to look forward to. Congratulations and good luck with the migration!

I like the pun on the name. Did you realize babywhales may eat squid, but squid has shrimp for breakfast?

(Quote) Somewhat off-topic, did you mention that because of this VPN-for-privacy attack, that circumvents VPN-interfaces by creating rogue higher-priority routes? I read about that on Arstechnica. What's your impression?

(Quote) I run the CrowdSec-plugin on OPNsense. I am under the impression that it comes with a (daily updated) blocklist, and that it adds source IPs from attacks to my firewall to their list. I don't pay for it, but I'm not sure (read: no idea) whe…

(Quote) Does it need to be an official Raspberry Pi, or is a cheaper alternative allowed as anecdotal "yes, it works"? For a couple of years I had my children give their friends an Orange Pi Zero for their birthdays (the 512 meg version, …

Before, I could log into the client area to see that my VPS is offline. Now I get placed in a waiting queue before even being able to view the service being unavailable. Once I'm in, how do I find out on which node my VPS is (not) running?

(Quote) I think he means to say: "Like it or not, but IPv6 is healthier for you!"

Beware, the first "option" when creating the poll is a trap!

Wow, it may not be enough for a movie script, but it sure is an interesting read! If the Internet had better enforcement of the "don't be a dick"-rule, the maintainer may not have gotten pressured into sharing maintainership after abusive…

Thanks a lot guys! (Quote) I'm glad to see that my script-based approach is not totally outdated. Thanks for the array tip :-) (Quote) I heard good things about NixOS over the years, so it definitely is on the list to try out once. (Quote) Ansibl…

Thanks for taking the time to elaborate! (Quote) Yes, you did! I wondered in which case it would increase security or usability. (Quote) I now have a bunch of scripts that ssh into $1 with a maintenance user, some of which execute $2. In that dire…
