Not a bad idea. But as a comparison, Hetzner has a 5TB storage box with unlimited BW for 10.90 per month, or 2.19 per TB.

Interesting. Using this approach you could clone a vanilla OS and dd it in the rescue system, giving you any OS you'd like (if BSD ain't your thang). I'll have to give this a whirl.
