CraneMail vs. MXRoute
Can anyone give me the lowdown on CraneMail versus MXRoute? I seem to recall once reading that CraneMail is a reseller account of MXRoute. (Correct me if I'm mistaken.) But that being said, what are the practical differences, if any, between choosing one over the other? Other than cost, obviously, which you can easily compare. Any technical, reliability, security, performance or other differences between them?
And getting back to pricing, assuming one is simply reselling the other, what accounts for the great discrepancy in the comparative pricing between them for, essentially, the same services? For 100GB CM is $10/year vs. $100/year at MX; for 250GB CM is $60/year vs. $150/year at MX (and only receiving 200GB at the latter); and for 1TB CM is $120/year vs. $550 at MX.
As an aside, I noticed inconsistent pricing for the CM 100GB plan on the Email Hosting page vs. the Email Hosting Deals page.

No, those are two independent companies.
As an email service, MXroute is noticeably older. At the same time Francisco (CM owner) isn't a noob for sure (BuyVM + BuyShared), rather the opposite.
MXroute is more of a "pure email and just email", CM is kind of closer to the "fancy cloud stuff / suite / etc." with corresponding bells and whistles.
I strongly prefer the former, so I've been a customer of @jarland since 2017.
Anyway, regardless of which one you choose, ditch big tech, support small businesses.

I also recommend MXRoute!

Both are cheap and good, just buy them both and you will have backup option all the time. BF is near so probably there will be 3 years for 10-20$. Atm i have both + zoho as i like them and continue to support them. But if i must choose for 1 i would go with mxroute, its simpler for me and easier to setup and use..

mxroute usually has BF deals that renew so tend to prefer them
Some important things to note:
None of them allows spam or marketing emails. This is why I recommend MXRoute if one has a company which sends lots of messages and there is huge communication involved.
CraneMail is good for bells and whistles, but I guess in the end it comes down to what a customer needs. Both are reliable.
Another thing to note: MXRoute will likely arrive with some offers on Black Friday. There are just a couple of weeks left.

CM worked good for me. That said, I'm sure jar's MXRoute will just work as well. Can't go wrong with either, I'd reckon.

They’re both great! Also both owners are no BS and actually give a shit!
One small benefit I prefer in CraneMail is ActiveSync on iOS. Apple recently removed imap push support that MXRoute leveraged.

What bells and whistles, specifically, that are unique?
You wouldn't anticipate recurring BF deals from both?
CraneMail has a different panel - it takes some time to get used to, but it's great. It looks different than what people are used to in general, but this is what I mean by bells and whistles.
MXRoute uses the good old-fashioned DirectAdmin interface which is extremely popular and everybody knows and loves.

I have both give awesome value for the monue involved having them owned by Sys Admins is a huge advantage when custom configs come up.
Also there is @Francisco's sexy ass in a towel from years ago.
I use both services, but MXRoute is easier to set up.

Very happy with my Cranemail account. Just wanted someone to handle mail delivery with SMTP & IMAP support. In the end I'm using a fair few of the bundle extras it comes with.
This thread got me to look into CraneMail - and I decided to "risk it" with the BF lifetime promotion (grabbed the smallest plan), mainly as a backup/alternative to MXroute.
I haven't added any domains to Namecrane or tested sending/deliverability yet - no time, and all my existing domains are currently set up with MXroute.
Still, I wrote down what I've noticed before and right after purchase:

I've used both. Both are solid.
Been using Cranemail recently. EmClient licenses are a nice touch -- great email client for both PC (Windows) and mobile (Android) that I've been using daily for 6+ months now.

Main difference seems to be the larger mailbox sizes with CraneMail.
Where is their Black Friday promotional pricing listed? Haven't seen it yet.
For BF they added more domains in lifetime offers - no price discounts.
So, the standard pricing page shows it with the added domain count:

Just watch out for the payment info = account info peculiarity:

Small bumps at the start, but so far quite good - hopefully Namecrane will become a good Mxroute alternative/backup.
Testing intensively while planning to move a client to Namecrane thanks to enough storage to allow webmail and IMAP use for ~40 email accounts that can grow over 10 GB each (some went near the 30 GB limit).
@Francisco - feel free to copy/paste and edit this, to help your knowledgebase grow with the basic how-tos (I made step-by-step setup tutorial and explained forwarding configuration):

Wonder if cron emails are handled better, rather than mxroute blocking them. :-/
Mxroute still allows obvious spam through though and my recent ones are somewhat interesting.
Allegedly from [email protected]..

I should really allow mxroute use on Tierhive, @jarland is good people.

After a few weeks of testing it does seem that for the spam that I'm getting, Cranemail does a bit better filtering (with no false positives yet).
But I think that also depends on the configuration. I set Mxroute's email filter to let more stuff in and I can filter it via Betterbird. With Cranemail I am yet to touch the filter - if I don't get (m)any false positives, I may not touch it ever.
Fair to note that Mxroute has been rock solid in terms of uptime and deliverability (both ways) for now getting closer and closer to ten years (since 2018). I'll be delighted if Cranemail service also stays nearly as good - time will tell (I am an optimist in this case).

TOS section 1.2:
https://namecrane.com/legal/terms-of-service
"1,2 - NameCrane may cancel or suspend your access to NameCrane services at any time and for any reason without notice. Upon cancellation or suspension, your right to use the service will stop immediately. You may not have access to data that you stored on the service after we suspend or terminate the service. "
Is this usual?
Edit: bolding was done by me.

Yes, clauses like this are fairly common in tech and hosting Terms of Service. Most providers reserve broad rights to suspend or terminate accounts without notice, though the exact wording and customer protections vary.
The answer I was hoping for. Namecrane has been in the business for well over five years and have a decent reputation. This just got me thinking.
Edit - for context:
I'm "risking" a 2 TB lifetime deal to sort a client out (hope they'll be in good hands with a working IMAP at Cranemail).
Mxroute's large storage plans were out of their acceptable budget - that was my first recommendation.
Will finish it all by Monday (the migration and all). So far so good.
🔧 BikeGremlin guides & resources
Sounds like a plan my man. just rebuilding OS templates to get deployment from button click to ssh in to the container from the outside in less than 1 min for YetiNode
Client migrated.
Monday work open.
Cranemail all services effectively down (timing out and not sending emails) - for 2 hours now.
I did recommend MXroute first, but that was out of budget for larger storage plans, but I did recommend Cranemail then, after having been happy with a few weeks of testing.
Will see how this ends.
It isn't boring.
Email should be boring.
Boring is good.
Edit:
At times like these, it's highly impractical that my contact email with the provider is hosted with the very provider whose service is down - Namecrane might consider changing that strict policy.
🔧 BikeGremlin guides & resources
I'm not sure what policy that is; my contact details at NC are hosted elsewhere for that very reason (and the account has a secondary contact on gmail, with the same logic)
edit: unless you mean Namecrane's support email being hosted on NC, I suppose...!
Policy is that my payment email (pay pal in this case) must be my contact email with my account.
No exceptions, apparently (I opened a ticket to explain and ask).
Edit: so I use my domain email on Paypal- and I am hosting the same domain on NC now.
🔧 BikeGremlin guides & resources
Ahh! Yes, I'd forgotten that - I think that was why i put the secondary contact on there, but then ended up pulling that domain elsewhere (partly, but not exclusively, for this reason).
