Do we have some Archers?

Having the idea to try something different, I installed Arch Linux, which I never used before. I have seen some very nice articles on the Arch wiki. Now I have to go and read some more about Arch. At least, it boots successfully! :)

    I'm more of a McDowell's Linux guy

    But on a more serious note, I think I made it to reading how to install it and I figured I already get frustrated enough with things having a good handle on debian flavors but Arch seems specifically made for people who are a glutton for punishment. Have things changed in that department?

  • jqrjqr OG

    Yup. I've been running it on my personal laptop for a few years now. I don't recall it ever breaking, except when I've made bonehead mistakes. 😅

    I used to run Debian stable, but I got tired having to give up on newer packages. I tried sid for a while, but I figured at that point I should switch to something that was a rolling release by design.

    I think the Arch wiki is the best resource for anyone using Linux, regardless of distribution. I often go there first when researching/troubleshooting.

    It's pronounced hacker.

    Is there a way in the Arch package system to

    • run bleeding edge software;

    • self-compile everything like Gentoo, BSD, and apt-build; and

    • change init programs among systemd, system v, runit, others;

    all in an already installed and running system (with a reboot)?

    I hope everyone gets the servers they want!

    I used to have a compound bow, so yes.

    pacman -Syyuu goes brr

    • self-compile everything like Gentoo, BSD, and apt-build; and

    AUR but it is not as convenient as portage and overlays.

    • change init programs among systemd, system v, runit, others;

    I think only systemD is officially supported by Arch Linux team nowadays. However there is Artix available.

    Arch fio a little faster than Debian, enough to nudge 4k IOPS to well over 800 from Debian's 798. Single Core GB6 is 11 points slower. Compare at https://lowendspirit.com/discussion/comment/176796#Comment_176796.

    During a visit to France I got to see Agincourt. Apparently the battlefield still remains much as it was back in 1415, long and somewhat narrow, with forests on either side. There was a road across the battlefield. The road had a little sign saying the road marked approximately the location of the English archers at the start of the fighting. I am guessing the sign referred to the location after the English advanced to within longbow range of the French, who were massed at the top of the gentle gradient.

    I read that the trees on both sides of the battlefield prevented the French from surrounding the much smaller English army. And it had rained, so mud obstructed the attempted advance of the heavily armed French cavalry. The archers were on the far right and the far left of the English line, so I am guessing that the French cavalry trying to charge the English center must have received arrows from both sides.
