Well over that now; why do you ask?

We get around 50 new users per day at the moment; live VPS status goes up and down wildly all day, many people use them for a few hours and then destroy them to save money. We have around 2000 VPS shut down and only billing for storage alone.

From deploy to prompt was just under 3 minutes 128mb ram, 1GB disk, low everything.

Reboot to prompt was 28 seconds.

My best guess and it's just a guess, you have the 'button' module missing or unlinked so acpi is not responding, libvirt default is a 300 second timeout before it destroys, and if you have anything else installed on a micro that's gonna add to the time.

Just on my phone and totally guessing though happy to investigate in the morning if you want though.

Thanks for taking the time to try! It was at the UK location. It was linked to the disk/IOPS because the booting delay dropped after the increase of performance level. I actually kept the screenshots, see below! Nothing changed in the config between the two steps except the disk performance level setting. Also my Alpine version is: 3.22.2 (yours was 3.24.1 - I don't know if I should upgrade?).

BEFORE (@ lowest disk performance level):

AFTER (@ highest disk performance level):

Finally, my AI told me to give you this, and said "an ACPI issue would delay the shutdown time not the boot time":

Aaah ok @jcn50 ok so it's the older template I understand why now, that's the reason I recently 'rerolled' the new one, the official ones from alpine are super inefficiently made so they work on everything which means a lot of bloat and they have an odd acpi issue.

I left 3.22.2 alone so as not to mess with recipes that people might have pinned to the old version, maybe I should optimise that too.

The fun of alpha :) Ideally redeploy with the new template if that's not too much trouble or we have a blog entry on optimisation for alpine if you want to apply that yourself.

OK thank you! I guess there are no ways to upgrade without a redeployment because the kernel of the container won't change?..

Hostname changes in the panel are coming; you can't yet, because it's tied to the cloud-init config and has wider implications. You can't change your subnet; I can't see any common justification for anyone to ever need to?

Because you don't think about the (proper) hostname when you deploy ; and I have made a mistake for the subnet of a deployed VPS (my mind skipped the "Private IP" dropdown).

Could you add a "Copy" function along with the "Migrate" one?.. That would really save me a lot of time!

Are the backups of 1x VPS location available to another VPS in the same location?..

You can change it in the VPS directly in the mean time and this only impacts reinstalls.

@jcn50 said: and I have made a mistake for the subnet of a deployed VPS (my mind skipped the "Private IP" dropdown).

So do you mean change the IP not the "entire subnet" ? if so that is coming, also multiple IP's is coming, but we wont be doing full subnet changes I dont think.

@jcn50 said: Could you add a "Copy" function along with the "Migrate" one?..

Already in our sandpit version but probably wont be released until beta due to the amount of changes we need to consider for cloud-init a copied VPS right now would have no functional networking as it would hav ethe old VPS's IP and MAC. this has a log of subtle complexities for us on many levels, but its very much in progress.

@jcn50 said: Are the backups of 1x VPS location available to another VPS in the same location?..

You can attach a VPS's backup to any other VPS anywhere, you will see the backup volume as /dev/vdb in the OS, currently a full restore only works for the original VPS it was made against, again because of the networking considerations mentioned above.

Yes yes, the Private IP of the VPS~ not my own entire subnet.

I can imagine the mess of a "Copy" function but it should be less complicated than a "Migrate"~ and also you could just do:
    1) take a backup
    2) create new VPS
    3) restore backup on the new one
which is what I am going to try manually now.

So what do you do about the fact that it has the same IP and mac address as the other server you made a copy of? I know its simple on a single VPS manual scale, but its much less so when you have a mesh system that bridges your servers between all locations so they operate as 1 big lan, checking for network isolation between subnets and origina, HAProxy validation and L2 protection to consider and cloud-init data.

Anyway, as a tip if you want to do it quick, just spin up a new VPS, put them both in rescue and dd it over ssh, you have a copy, you can then manually update what needs to be updated.

  • A question for @AnthonySmith I deployed two backends with HAProxy. Is there a way to make HAproxy trust caddy's self-signed TLS cert on both backends? I am trying to set up zero trust where the traffic will flow to haproxy, it will then be re-encrypted and send to backends.

No, for that you need TCP mode, we are deploying it eventually, we have it working in the internal version.

For now, it's not possible using NAT IPv4 unless you use non-standard ports for SSL.

Either Los Angeles or Miami most likely, but not ruling out India.

We took a bit of a break from expansion and focused on availability/capacity instead, as some locations were constantly out of stock or overloaded, that is mostly solved now so we might look to start adding locations again within the next month.

I have not been well, so we are a few weeks behind where we planned.

Nope, just allocate a port from the VPS management page:

LowEndSpirit - VPS Hosting and tech forum

If you want a custom internal port (I suggest 443 for compatibility) then enter it there and then the panel will issue e.g. 6789 > 443 so https://domain-pointed-to-external-ip.com:6789 will reach your VPS on e.g. 10.100.101.102:443

    I hope that makes sense.

It does, thank you. However, the issue is I am trying to to use HAproxy to have 2-3 backends and port forwarding does not help with it. Is there absolutely no way to force HAproxy to send HTTPS traffic to backends? I guess I would have to wait for TCP mode then.
