Low End Dedicated Server Share, Vint Hill, Virginia, USA

Friendly greetings!

MetalVPS now has a new Low End dedicated server, an OVH SYS-LE-1.

From shell accounts on this server, we can

  • work directly on the bare metal,
  • make our own KVM VPSes with almost any operating system, and
  • make several kinds of containers.

Of course, we also directly can see how well the server node is performing.

Last, but not least, we can enjoy fun conversations right here in this thread!

Let's try!

Best wishes!

Tom

  • I know I'm mostly a lurker but this sounds right up my alley. I've been mostly experimenting with TierHive and shopping for a deal on a dedicated server with this exact OVH offering being on the short list of reasonably priced ones. I'd be happy to join in on the share if I'm elligble. Clueless ™ User.

  • I need a server that can be used for software compilation and packaging. Thank you.

Thanks for your comments. I'm sorry I'm just seeing them now, as I am on my way to sleep. A clueless™ user would be a perfect match, and, yes, the server is great for compiling. More tomorrow. Apologies that I am slow. . . .

    @xDorito @skyccc

Hello! When you guys have time, please fund your first month of service via PayPal:

From @xDorito an ed_25519 ssh public key is needed.

When funds are received, I will reinstall the server so it is pristine for you. Then I will make the funded account(s). I will post progress notes here.

Any questions or issues, if you want something special or different installed on the server, or a change in the server configuration, please let me know.

    Thanks again! Best!

  • Thanks for the oppurtunity! Just sent payment and my SSH key in a private message. The only specific thing I had in mind on the server would be Incus so I could experiment with deployments to a dedicated server as well as the standard devel packages I imagine others would also make use of.

  • Not_OlesNot_Oles Provider

@xDorito Excellent! Payment received! Thank you!

I am going for my daily walk around the block. Then I will try to add zswap and provision accounts.

    Any issues with the install?

  • Not_OlesNot_Oles Provider

Got in to the reinstalled server. Next up is to add accounts for me and @xDorito and also to provision zswap. Plus install Apache, development tools, Incus plus more.

  • Surprised the reimage takes that long but then again it is purely HDD storage.

    @xDorito

Welcome to MetalVPS! Your account is ready.

I sent you a PM with login info.

About sudo. Personally, it's okay with me to share sudo with our excellent neighbors on vh. However, in the past, one of our most wonderful neighbors objected strongly to anyone else besides me having sudo. Indeed, you yourself might not want sudo responsibility. Also, we need to check what @skyccc thinks. Only if it's 100% okay with @skycc, and with you, I am okay with sharing the root via sudo.

A few more neighbors would be welcome, too, although I am not expecting many. It's just fine with me if our neighborhood stays small and friendly. :)

Anything you need, I am delighted to help!

    Best!

    Tom

  • I'm fine with either. I don't expect I need much access outside of being added to specific groups. The way I see it operating without just slapping us in sudoers could be good practice.

Best!

I'm sorry, I just saw it. I have bought an independent VPS to use. Thank you.

@skyccc Congrats on your new VPS! Hope it works great for you! Best wishes!

Incus is installed! Approximately 328 Debian packages. :)

Now learning a little about Incus configuration options. :)

As you can see above, @skyccc has moved on, and noone else has appeared. So, for now, it's you and me. When you have time, please think on whether you want to share root with me. I'm happy to share, but only if sharing root is what you also want.

    Thanks! <3

Still need to add you to whatever groups you want; just need to know which.

The test instances are sleeping. Me too, in a bit.

More tomorrow. Thanks @xdorito for asking for Incus! I had fun installing Incus, which probably might not have happened if you had not asked. <3
