Cheapest KVM VPS in Frankfurt

Hi,

I'm looking for a very small VPS in Frankfurt to use as a internal VPN gateway for all client machines in Germany. Since this would only take care of the VPN connections and some routing to the other servers, I think it would be fine to go for something like

  • 1 vCPU
  • >=256 MB RAM
  • >= 1 TB bandwidth
  • 1 Gbps connection
  • dedicated ipv4 and ipv6
  • Only KVM

Was looking for vultr, but 5 € / month is a bit too much for this purpose.
So I wonder if someone here knows some better deals in this range and for this location.

Cheers!

CrownCloud offer KVM in Frankfurt - check with @SpeedBus to see if they might have a deal for you (possibly with discount for annual payment).

I know them as a consistently reliable provider.

Another option might be First-Root (in Düsseldorf, about 200 km from Frankfurt) - they may still offer a 512 MB ram KVM for €20 (yearly).

I would also vouch for First Root KVM Power Edition (KVM). They are providing reliable service, good network quality and support is quick and helpful.

Another option could be vserver.site Server Boerse where you can grab a VM perfectly for VPN and routing for only 20 EUR per year. Support is great and their servers are located directly in Frankfurt.

I am having routing/vpn VMs with both of them and both are doing a great job. Hard to decide which to prefer. That's why I took both of them. :)

Great recommendations already, let me add to the noise.
Look up Avoro offer in the deals somewhere. Overkill for your needs, but still below your budget.

    • amazon lightsail is $3.5 a month for the smallest plan. still not cheap but reliable and good for the intended purpose (Equinix DC in FRA).
    • avoro 3€ monthly, maybe cheaper if you can deduct german VAT (first-colo)
    • fastpipe.io 2.95€ per 30 days, maybe cheaper if you can deduct german VAT (afaik own peerings and DDOS protection)
    • arubacloud is 2.79€ - vmware works as good as KVM for me. (also Equinix DC)
    • greencloudvps offered something at around $24 yearly while on sale, maybe contact them directly. (23media)

from those I only have no service with fastpipe (yet), can recommend all of the others ;-)

    Thanks for the mention! :+1:

Maybe something like this could work @tehdartherer ?

    1 GB RAM
    20 GB SSD
    2 core fair-share access include
1 Snapshot Slot (User can restore/create/destroy snapshot from the panel)
    KVM based
    1 TB bandwidth per month
    1 Gbit/sec upink
    1 IPv4
    /64 IPv6

    Located at Frankfurt, Germany

    $25/year

Clouvider's network is many galaxies ahead of Hetzner's but I can understand that unfortunately such qualities don't matter much in LE world particularly

    Nah, definitely not as much.

Hardware is, but you get what you pay for, in this case an actual server not a soho.

Yep, sadly that does not translate to my customers getting what I pay for because they can pay less elsewhere, or I can make 5% profit margin by competing with hetzner and paying more for the hardware.

To low profit margins and to high risk in Frankfurt for me, but I assume you did not setup the Frankfurt location expecting many small VPS hosts to be customers there.

I should however say, that may well all change when solus.io comes out and my only USP no longer needs to be price.

Yeah but going after the price alone and using the same soho as everyone else means you compete on price alone, and there’ll always be a HostDoc cheaper than you, which will always win with you on price (at least until they die but then their reincarnation takes their place anyway). I personally believe price is the last thing one should aim to compete on if they are in for the long term.

Yes but there is a line, I have managed to intuit that line well for the last 10 years, but when I am paying more than double for hardware to provide exactly the same service to the perspective of 90% of the public, what else is there?
