Use for a VPS

I sometimes just randomly search for a vps order it and then not having a purpsoe for the server. I don't know why i am getting this urge and i would want some guidance how i can get rid of this urge.

Literally every usecase for a vps is free
Image or vide hosting? Icloud or google drive with encrypted volumes
    Web hosting? Netlify
    Email? Skiff tutanota or protonmail
    VPN? Use protonvpn or tor

    VPSes are useless

  • Buy VPS
    IDLE

Haven't bought a single service in VirMach Great Ryzen 2022 - 2023 Flash Sale.

  • You're doing everything just right if it's a decent deal. I doubt anybody else here could hesitate.

  • You're talking to a group of fellow addicts about why you can't stop.

We empathize. I'm not sure we have anything helpful though

You state the facts, but not the sentiments.

Does it bother you, keep you from completing (other) useful tasks? Do you get frowned upon when doing it in public, or are you more of a closet-VPS-buyer?

As far as urges go, I'd say this is one of the more harmless persuasion.

i hear you OP... the only way to treat this addiction is - avoid LE* or any other places you visit.

I am actually proud of my self - I didn't get any new service this BF (tempted - added account credits, but thats all)...

I cancelled a bunch of services and transferred a few with the community.

Its difficult - but, sooner you get to manage it, better it is in the long term.

PS: No, I am not saying I am all out of idlers. I have quite a bunch still with me, and its difficult to let go - cause FOMO and some are really decent deals.

    Good luck @catdrout

Depending on what you use it for a VPS can give the real freedom and control that are missing from the freebie offerings. I use mine to host ecommerce sites. If a provider deadpools or issues occur can move a site to another VPS and another provider and be up and running in under 10 minutes. Multiple LowEnd™ VPSs from different providers are good for redunant backups taken several times a day.

I'd never use a VPS for email, that's just not going to work in the real world at least not for long unless you are some kind of email guru. MXroute for a couple bucks a year for all domain email.

As has been said a million times if a product is free then most likely YOU are the product. That's not a problem a lot of the time but for important stuff you want to retain as much control as you can.

Let them idle. Keep them idle in the their darkness while they scream to come out and see the light of the day!

  • No no, install monitoring scripts and let your idler vps monitor eachother

Artificial intelligence is no match for our natural stupidity.

Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.

  • I can see that you don't need a new host, you need a detox.
Perhaps a new business to launch on the green forums.

Well, I have to say that I usually only have two servers that are really used.
But I think I'm diving into addiction. I currently have 7 and only need 3.

Of course, to feel reassured, you just have to look at those who have 30+ servers

  • Docker instances

Helped how? Please share your experience and your next steps

  • I know now that i should be avoiding VPSes if i don't have a usecase for them so my next action is to focus on coding instead of selfhosting as i don't need any hosting right now

  • If you don't count NAT, I actually use about 2 VPS (1 for HostHatch compute and storage combined).
However, I owned about 20 VPS last year (collected in previous years). I let go of about 15 on Black Friday this year.

Use vscode to connect to a remote env for development is a main use case in the old day. Installing and dockering on windows wasting me too much time. But after I graduated, I no longer needed Windows software and changed my laptop to Ubuntu, so there was very little in this aspect.

you can work i sadly cannot so buying VPSes is pointless if i wanna starve to death

You should try LET, over there starving to death is preferable to not buying more VPS.
