For context, please see @ExAjiMag's posts on the free Crunchbits server thread, especially my post suggesting to @ExAjiMag that he post a tutorial.

Does anybody know whether or not the hack described in the OP actually works? Is the whole thing a spoof?

I hope everyone gets the servers they want!

  • This server is intended to be used by researchers, not by kids.

I already reported this incident to GESIS administrators

I think they fixed it, chroot dun work no more.
    update: nope still works :p
update 2: instance is limited to 4GB while neofetch still does show 772GB

Shot them a paragraph at: https://www.gesis.org/en/help
I suggest everyone to do the same.

I wouldn't have cared if it was Google or Microsoft, but this is an educational institute, a place where many would need such compute resources, and it would be a shame if GESIS had to shut it down.

It's not chroot, but proot, a user-space implementation of chroot.
And the "free vps" is only a limited sandbox envirment which is under non-root user privilege.

Maybe it a good case to educate people how to use proot, but not for Social Sciences :) .

I didn't bother checking the script, but yes seems like it is proot, isn't that also the think people use in termux to run distros?

  • The service is "exposed" by design, as they clearly say:

    Who can use this service?

This service is intended for use by social scientists. You can build and launch all binder-ready projects without logging in.
    Is the service free?

The service is free for social scientists.
What languages/environments can be on the service? Can I use my preferred R, Julia or Python environment?

You can select any language/environment available as binder-ready projects. A collection of binder-ready examples is available at https://github.com/binder-examples.
    What are the service's restrictions?

For the anonymous use, the service has a limit of:

    4 GB memory
    2 CPU cores
    10 minutes inactivity timeout

Usage rights are limited to academic activities and governed by our Terms of Use.

    and

Why does Open Research Computing matter?

“Openness” is regarded by many researchers as the to most important property to any scientific endeavor. However, achieving openness has proven to be non-trivial and comes with many problems, in particular when large data-sets and complex analysis workflows are involved. This poses for infrastructure providers like GESIS an important question: How can we help to overcome these problems?

We, the GESIS Notebooks team, want to promote Open Science by offering easy-to-use technical solutions for documenting and sharing computational workflows for data-intensive research designs. To this end, we run a instance of BinderHub (called GESIS Notebooks - Open Research Computing for the Social Sciences) and are part of the mybinder.org Federation the service.

It is our hope that the GESIS Notebooks service helps in

creating incentives for scholars to make their work more easily reproducible,
promoting standards to ensure interoperability of Open Science repositories,
offering training material for scholars based on Open Science practices.

    Little did they know.

Anyway, they are informed about this development and I guess they will re-evaluate what "openness" should mean.

And this is why we cannot have good things.

    This seems pretty useful.
I hope this community does not exploit it to the point where this organization is forced to disable it for everyone to use.
