Contabo - No setup fee for VPS atm + free storage upgrade

Seems like Contabo has no setup fee for their VPS, and other products due to Sysadmin week special in case anyone wanted to give them a try or wanted to get a vps from them: https://contabo.com/en/

I can also (e.g. for smallest vps) choose free storage upgrade (400GB SSD -> 600GB SSD, or 100GB NVME -> 150 GB NVME)

Comments

  • Contabo was my very first VPS provider and they were so bad, they made me switch to dedicated servers completely. They made me think all VPS (including the ones from other providers) are all garbage because your neighbors steal all of your disk IO, bandwidth and CPU simultaneously. Didn’t touch any VPS again because I was afraid of them, until I stumbled across the free VMs from Oracle.

It was only at that moment I realized that VPSs actually able to deliver good performance, if you simply buy them from anywhere else other then Contabo haha.

That was a few years ago however. Not sure if their new VPS are still like that.

Rest assured, everything is still the same if not worse. Heavy overselling, crappy network and ~support.

My experience with them has been mixed, but I remembered some people here were using them, so perhaps for them this offer would be interesting. Right now, all my VPS are with ZAP Hosting (lifetime) and my dedi is with CloudCone (lifetime).

  • Contabo is like your very first car after you get license to drive. It is 10+ years old Dacia Sandero. It drives and there is brakes. That's actually it. And you better do not expect radio, isolation from water in the sealing etc. Just drive until you get understanding about what you want from life.

Than you get a fckin hetzner and call it a day.

What's your cloudcone dedi lifetime deal? Is it still available?

If you want a storage VPS (like in the title) then Servarica:

    — Here's an example entry offer (ref). More space, less money, high reliability.
Note this is nearly a random pick — there are many others of all sizes and types (HDD, SATA, NVMe, hybrid). Browse through "Categories" to see the rest.

If you want performance, i.e. something like Contabo's VDS (dedicated resources), they also have ones:

    — E.g. 2 dedicated AMD EPYC cores (ref), 8 GB RAM, etc.
People are buying those for prolonged heavy loads, however I don't have any, only storage.

There's also some promo currently. Try both CANADA_VDS_35 and CANADA_WILDBEAST_10 during checkout to see which works and which gives better discount.

StorageAMD EPYC VDS (ref) up to 4TB NVMe & 10TB SAN disk / Big HDD VPS (ref) from $2.42/mth/TB

What are some reliable VPS providers you would recommend based on current performance reviews?

Ranking of the ones I tried below (the ones I can remember), lower position always means worse
(I live in Germany, therefore this many German providers)

Honorable mentions, limited quantity per customer, hence no comparison possible

    • Oracle Cloud: reliable, huge and free VMs, limited per customer though, their paid VPS are expensive
    • MicroLXC: didn’t use them for long, but solid until now, perfect as a exit node or for micro applications
    • Aeza.net: their 4gb Sweden plan for 1€ is really good but limited 1 per customer, everything else is too expensive for me, didn’t try, wouldn’t try

    Never downtime, good performance

    • Hetzner Cloud: rock solid, price slightly higher but 100% worth
    • Strato: has gotten better over the years, price performance uptime tick all boxes, cheaper version of Ionos with more disk-space
    • Ionos: reliable over many years, never disappointed me, 1€ VPS cheap, other expensive
    • Misaka.io: 130ms ping 0 packet loss from Berlin to China for 10€

    Good uptime

    • Netcup: decent, usable, more performance would be nice though
    • Cloudie.sh: affordable American IXP VPS, especially their new 3-in-1 package, if you are into really into BGP

High performance good price but uptime depends on luck

    • Hostbrr: switched away after many DDoS, only one storage VPS left (5€ 6TB) which is working excellently, high performance high uptime, as long as they don’t get DDoS’ed, they are insanely good since they use Hetzner infrastructure
    • HT-Hosting.de: bad uptime but high performance, keeping one with 16GB zen4 5Gbps unlimited for 5€, if they fix their issues it’s a gem

Bad performance bad uptime but compensates with their price, wouldn’t really recommend

    • Prepaid-host.com: 24GB zen3 9€ crappy disk IO due to central ceph cluster instead of local NVMe, low bandwidth, left them due to their frequent downtime, would maybe reconsider if they fix their uptime and when I don’t need a fast disk, price solid
    • C1V: the one we all love ❤️, cheap performance, cheap network, cheap price
    • iHostART: no DCMA until caught, slow af, gave it away, price ok, wouldn’t recommend unless you really need the no DCMA, wouldn’t use again

Never again, (probably) won’t get better

    • Contabo lol: didn’t experience real downtime but the throttle was really horrible, would rather take something with occasional downtime but good performance then Contabo. Every time I tried to access any of my services hosted on their VPS it was just painfully slow, not endurable, wont use them even if it’s for free
    • Dashserv/Realtoxmedia: meh, mediocre, wasn’t satisfied, don’t excel in any category, no reason to choose them over anything listed above, don’t see any future potential
    • Caasify: Their UI is horrible, unstructured and full of bugs. During checkout they charged me 3 times for one top up (my first 10 attempts failed because of their unstructured interface, first time users using their mobile website will INEVITABLY press the wrong buttons and fail their payment multiple times). The one successful payment got charged from my card immediately, got added to my balance immediately, ok. BUT: 2 times out of the other multiple failures still got charged from my creditcard, long AFTER the failed payment attempts. Was literally getting one credit card notification every hour, making me think someone was abusing my card, until I saw the name caasify and checked my caasify account, where my balance increased by x amount each time. VPS also took a long time to fully provision, even though they claim everything is “automated” through direct API integration with the respective provider.

    Summerhost warning!

    • Evoshosting: 24GB zen4 (7950X3D) 10Gbps unlimited for 5€ lol, one month left until summer holidays are over, let’s see how long it lasts, if they stay, it’s one of the best deals I have seen in my life, after the always free 24GB armv8, even better than the 24GB zen4 anniversary deal from Hostbrr

Tbh, I was pleasantly surprised, (few weeks in testing one of your VPS), the performance and network indeed suck ass, as other members have already mentioned frequently xD, but as long as the price is low, it perfectly fits the requirements for certain applications (for private use only). Definitely wouldn’t recommend it to other people but for a small group of people, they are great boxes 👍 .

Below average but better experience than some other providers haha.
