Some forum/server performance stats.

InceptionHostingInceptionHosting Hosting ProviderOG

Thought I would start a new thread as the old one will be background noise by now.

I think at some point soon I will expand the disk to 10GB, ram seems fine and single core seems fine.

Server is managed via runcloud, backups of the site and database runs hourly now.

Webserver is Apache2 + NginX front end to keep htaccess functionality within vanilla because it hates change :)

At some point soon I will be adding railgun in to the mix to speed things up a bit more, the site has been slowing down according to google as it grows, not significantly but its an obvious trend.

Can upload of images to the forum be disabled - so only hotlinks are used?
    That would save on storage.

I agree, especially since I visit LES with my tablet all the time, I don’t need to go to another site, upload, then copy links and paste it here.

The disk is only about 70% full i just happened to screen grab during a backup which inflates the disk use.

I will just set the image expiry in off topic categories to 3 years and provide enough disk space until then.

The images are not really taking up that much space.

After todays small upgrades, I hope that is as far as it needs to go, it seems for anything multi user production the 2GB mark really is required these days :(

  • So, it's 2 GB RAM, 22 GB SSD now? :)

  • InceptionHostingInceptionHosting Hosting ProviderOG

    Yup and 2 cores burst.

  • That's probably "low end" these days mind.

When I get time I sometimes have a play in proxmox and spin up a small (64mb RAM) VM in there and have a play.

You should probably get that checked.

The low end spirit in us all suggests we should cram as much as possible on a server with specs (and more importantly price) as low as possible. Lots of fun, cheap and educational all at the same time.

A low end spirited community hosted on a legitimately low end server is the epitome of low end shenanigans in my highly retarded and extremely unpopular opinion :-)

Well personally I think it would be hypocritical to run this forum on anything more than could be bought within the budget in the rules for the forum, any again personal preference I would rather that was on the lower side of the budget :)

  • I'm surprised this board needs 2gb of memory. I wonder what is happening that is using so much. Database cache? Is the underlying disk an SSD?

It does not need 2GB, it was running on 512mb just fine however it was causing noticeable slowdowns of the site during the regular backup cycle.

I upped it to 1GB over Christmas, no ram related issues since it avg around 600mb ish now.

I had to upgrade the disk space though as it kept touching 100% use during the backup run so I figured, why not bump it up to 2GB ram at the same time as upgrading the disk to give plenty headroom for growth.

I cant imagine it will ever need more than that in the next 12 - 24 months.

2GB more than enough especially since it's been fine tuned. It's the disk usage that will continue to increase.

    I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.

  • well, technically cloudflare also contributes resources

  • Is Vanilla free/open source, or paid? (IIRC there options for both) :)

Both. Frontpage of the site below shows them.

  • Uhm, yes, meant to ask if this installation was OSS or paid :)

  • Aha, I see the stats in the top screen shot, saying there are 3366 comments. If they average 1KB each (that is probably a high guess), that is just 3.3MB. Of course there is some db overhead and stuff, some static files, etc. But still, yeah, 512MB of ram should be plenty ;).

Its just runcloud, even the free version is great, I grabbed a 50% off subscription during black Friday and upgraded it to a pro or business plan (I forget which one exactly) .
