How peaceful is your /etc file listing?

Hello LES!

Here are three screenshots of /etc file listings, from my

  • Chromebook Debian Linux container,

  • FreeBSD VPS, and

  • Void Linux VPS.

Do you feel an emotional reaction to any of these /etc listings? In particular, does any one of the three /etc listings seem more peaceful and attractive than the others?

Please feel free to post a screenshot of your distro's /etc listing!

    I may be biased but FreeBSD looks the best, followed by Void which leaves Debian coming in third. Is that the right answer? Do I win a prize? :grin:

    Our HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE is squeaky clean.

    My basement workstation:

    If you notice the timestamps on those files you might recognize that my only hope toward /etc is to spare myself a walk to the basement to crawl behind the bench and plug a monitor into a noisy machine that stopped responding to ssh.

    @Not_Oles Just saying as a friend, you might find more peacefulness for example by going fishing. Perhaps it would be time for you to take a day or two off instead of trying to deep deeper meaning in file listings.

    I imagined that the Yeti would enjoy seeing yet another Slackware /etc directory listing! Isn't Slackware kinda like 🍦 for a Yeti?

    When I first saw your comment, my initial thought was, "I don't remember ever seeing any dot files in /etc." Then I ranls -laand was reminded of the Posix dot files which always seem present, I guess, in everyls -la` directory listing.

    Surprisingly, I also found

    -rw------- 1 root root 0 Oct 16 2022 .pwd.lock

    This is in /etc on a Debian container in my Chromebook.

    Taking a quick look around, I saw

    Maybe I ought to update the Chromebook container. There is a Chrome OS update pending as well.

    When I started this thread, it really was meant to be about the mysterious, cosmic beauty in simplicity. There was something -- something seeming simple -- (but maybe not "really" simple) -- that I liked about the Void /etc screenshot in the OP.

    Yes! "-F" provides additional helpful information concisely expressed. I wish "-F" were the default. But maybe there is a disadvantage to making "-F" the default for ls?
