What forum platform do you prefer
I used to love using Flarum and recently discovered a new platform - Discourse, but it required a vps to set up

Vanilla looks nice and plain and is preferred.

Where's phpBB? MyBB? vBulletin?
Modern endless scrolling "instant post and forget" flat forums without proper category sections and subforums annoy me.
My 2c (what I tried, the pros and cons of each, and why I voted for XenForo):

Flarum, I use it for both forums in my signature.

I like this 'old school' one: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/
it's so pretty.

Don't like discourse. The others are kind of ok, I think. Xenforo is what the big forums are mostly using, I think. I like Vanilla for small boards but the moderation tools are sort of flaky. I miss Usenet. Lemmy more or less sucks, but if I were doing something new i would probably connect up ("federate") to it somehow. I wouldn't want to use its reddit-style UI. Maybe it needs an NNTP gateway.

None.
IRC for life.
phpBB is complementary to IRC! :P
...and crowded. But yes, it has something...
I can't stand https://budgetlightforum.com/ since the migration to Discourse. It used to be such a great forum with many informative threads I would return to, but now it's just another soulless, endlessly scrolling, utter mess flat forum - better suited to generations looking for instant chit-chat rather than seeking and sharing knowledge.

This thread is super interesting.
Anyone know what LET and LES are built on?
Both run on Vanilla. It's on the footer.
phpBB lives long enough.
Discourse seems to be quite popular with technical forums.
But I really prefer good old NNTP where you can have everything you care about in one place (btw, Gmane is really great to follow mailing lists).
That's epic, bro! I was really attached to IRC during its peak; it was my go-to for real-time chat.

I like the forum where you can share piracy between members.
This platform takes you to a secret forum
