I'm bored what are your plans for 2025? 2024 goals achieved?
What's on the tin. Doesn't matter if it's personal, business, etc. Just curious.
Business wise for my host Z Plus:
My goal for 2024 was to finally release a public offer that wasn't garbage, think I did pretty good with the storage offerings.
My 2025 goals are to get my monthly recurring revenue covering more than just the power the servers use. Want to be not only sustainable, but also in a position to grow. I'm personally in a good position to go from here.
Immediate task list:
- Replace 4 NUC servers with 1 well-done newer system due to the pain that the nucs are.
- Grow business
- Once I've got enough I'll finish building out a new system so I can service the west coast from Vegas
- Finish out a new node system for Storage
- Migrate users from the old storage VM host to the new VM host. (Better CPU performance, higher density)
- Continue to grow and hopefully provide above 4 8's of service at an affordable yet sustainable price.
Personally, I'm gonna continue on my path to lose another 10lbs to improve my blood pressure , improve my posture and re-setup my standing desk so I can be a bit more active while working.
I know not a lot of hosts talk about the "omg I just started where do I go from here" so I love chatting about starting from the beginning where I just dump my day job earnings into hardware and keeping the lights and networking on.
Starting a host is no joke, even though I kind of meme on it. Anyone have "Start a summer host" on their 2025 task list? Anyway lemme here y'alls idea of fun or plans.

My 2025 goal: don't deadpool too hard
Well for me it's probably to get good at coding and get some jobs, looking for them here and there. And also to not have idlers, so that was successful in 2024 as all flash deals were oos 😂 dunno bout this year. And btw Happy New Year 🎊 ♥️.
Trust me. Use OKRs. I fly like photons

No matter what anyone tells you, don't let them convince you to put NUCs into production. Even if its yourself.
my goal is to
the rest is just fluff
I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.
Sadly, i already have intel NUC sitting idle in my house
what were those please list out them, I might try some of them too

2024 mostly sucked for me - and I expect things to keep getting worse over the 2025.
On the bright side: there's still plenty of room for stuff to get worse, so it's far from the point of "it couldn't get any worse."
I'll try to fix what I can, relax about what I can't fix, and enjoy what's left of the good stuff (still plenty if you know how to enjoy it).

My goal for 2024 was to completely get rid of VMware and switch to Proxmox for my home lab. Dealing with the machines at home was easy, and for rented servers I was able to rent replacement hosts, install Proxmox, migrate VMs and cancel the old VMware-based ones.
The big challenge was my colo as I had to find a way to lift-and-shift migrate the VMs in a totally self-contained manner as I had no other resources available in the DC. Fortunately the SSD with the VMs was NVMe and I had a sufficiently large SAS SSD also in the host. My solution was to install Proxmox over VMware, then setup a VMware guest and passthrough the NVMe drive. From there I was able to migrate the VMs back into Proxmox using their native VMware import tools.
Probably not the smartest way of doing it, but I was able to migrate about 30 VMs that way and it only took me a few hours so I was pretty happy with the result.
A few months ago I completely overhauled my personal Root CA. I was using Active Directory Certificate Services and it was in a very poor state as I had basically no idea what I was doing when first configuring it. Over time I've been distancing myself away from Windows, so I went looking for an alternative and found XCA.
It's a decent replacement for ADCS as it handles all the CA functions, supports templates and CRL gen, while being easier to work with for non-Windows systems as it has way friendlier options for exporting certificates. It takes me a fraction of the time to issue a certificate with XCA vs ADCS.
Last thing I did for 2024 was implement 464XLAT. Implementing IPv6 was my 2023 goal, but I never tried out the transitional technologies, so out of curiosity I configured DNS64 with dnscrypt-proxy and NAT64 with the Tayga plugin on OPNsense. So far it's working except for the somewhat lackluster Tayga performance. With my hardware it bottoms out at 500 Mbps.
For 2025 I'm looking forward to permanently moving to the United States. I haven't set a big technical goal like I had in previous years but I have ideas, mainly revolving around removing as much Windows stuff from the environment as possible. Another thing I've been putting off for some time is rebuilding the file server.
I hope you all have a fulfilling 2025. Here's to another year for all things LowEnd 🥂
Wow, you have got a good handle on things.
One thing that piqued from your post...
Moving to US.
Curious what are your reasons? Can you share where you are moving from?
The (seemingly) political instability and uncertainty- does that come into factor?
I have been going back and forth on this and sometimes I feel it's not what it used to be
