Whatever doesn't flag your vps for resource abuse tbh
I have run windows vps on 512mb ram.
Not the best experience. But it did work.
Depending on your usage i would personally pick a vps with atleast 2 cores (not old xeons, newer cpu), atleast 4gb ram and 60gb ssd/ nvme fir a smooth experience.
Also try to install windows server editions instead of Windows 10/ 11. Purely for better stability
also what should be budget for this? Isn't linux better and lighter for this kind of operation? I am asking because your mentioned windows a few times.
For example, if you say "f**k security" and decide to run Windows Server 2012 R2, you can get away with single core 1.4 GHz CPU along with 512 MB of RAM as well as 32 GB of disk space. I mean dont expect to install any mordern software on it or even put it online (unless you wanna get insta hacked by bots) but it will still do RDP.
I think to satisfy RDP + web browsing + YouTube video playback, whether you intend to use Windows or Linux, you should need 2 cores + 3g RAM + 30 G SSD hard drive as a minimum, and given RDP's poor frame rate and the computation and traffic required for video playback, I think the experience of watching YouTube via RDP is poor.
You should try to keep the video decoding and playback as local as possible, and only connect to YouTube through a proxy server.
It is possible to play videos with minimal latency on a VPS. I use both Chrome Remote Desktop and NoMachine without any issues. YouTube runs blazingly fast on Xubuntu with 4GB of RAM.

To play videos its just better to create a wireguard vpn server on that same vps, connect to that vps via vpn and just play the videos on your pc.
+1 to this. Wireguard, OpenVPN or any similar sort of VPN would perform much better; and the video is still played on your favorite local machine.
Never make the same mistake twice. There are so many new ones to make.
It’s OK if you disagree with me. I can’t force you to be right.

Just follow the minimum requirements for whatever Windows Server OS you are using:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started/hardware-requirements?tabs=cpu&pivots=windows-server-2025

FYI, linux also can do RDP if you want that route. Look at this for ubuntu: https://greenhost.cloud/how-to-setup-vnc-for-ubuntu-24-04/
Similarly, other linux OS can also do similar things. Requirements would be almost the same as windows servers.

Why would you run youtube over rdp? Would it not be more efficient to run the vps as a vpn server and connect trough that?
I think "youtube" is just a keyword for spam/hack or other illegal activies RDP is generally used for.

@alim, Minimum VPS requirements for smooth RDP browsing on YouTube and social media:
> CPU: 2 cores | RAM: 4 GB | Storage: 40 GB SSD | Bandwidth: 100 Mbps | OS: Windows Server 2019 or 2022
These specs ensure lag-free streaming and smooth browsing.

I don't think that you will be able to play youtube videos on RDP like when you're in the same computer.
yes you can, even 4K.
It will always go down to the CPU you have on the VPS and at least 2 GB RAM.
Most V4 and upwards will do it. AMD Ryzen all can handle that, especially if you have 2 vCores.
Basically any/most systems on DDR4 and upwards will do it fine, AVX2 is what you need for that.
