Do they do BF promos for lifetime? Is it worth it?
Sorry haven't followed the whole thread
They've usually had BF discounts for lifetime products during BF/CM. I think around 20-35% for lifetime vps/rootserver. Are you finally tempted for joining the ponzy scheme?
Hiwz your experience been? Would you do that today?

I've been happy with my 2 vps with ZAP. Granted they are mostly idling these days, but it feels great that I can always spin them up for some new project without paying up again. I've got Google Calendar reminders to login every 2-3 months to keep them active (but they also send email reminders if you forget to login).
I also love how you can install their game panel and host gameservers at the click of a button. Yes, I know about Pterodactyl etc, but I like the easy integration they have. I'd still recommend them, especially with the new hw being on Ryzen now there should be a performance boost. I might actually grab a third idler this BF

How much did you pay for the 2 you already have?
I think the vps (originally lxc, now also kvm) was around 70€, the Rootserver (kvm) was around 130€. So roughly 200€ish.

What are you looking to run on it? Which specs are you looking to get. I think all vps now come with 1 gbit/s, which is nice. Before it was 500 mbits and you had to pay up for 1 Gbits

Have got a few small apis that I wanna start off with. Nothing more.
Ironically I think the lifetime rootserver I got, which was originally more expensive than the lifetime vps, now has noticeably less performance. And because I had one in Finland and one in Germany, now both are in Germany. But presumably they will both eventually get the epic upgrade if I understand things correctly. But who knows. They work great for "permanent" wireguard nodes at least, I don't use them for much more lol.
And yet, yes, i will probably look for a lifetime code this BF. Maybe see if I can get one in the US somewhere, I think they have them in Virginia.

Whats the difference between vps and the root servers?
Could not find any direct comparison on their site.
Originally when I purchased, Rootservers used KVM virtualization and had a dedicated standard or premium cpu (specific models) you could opt for. Vps was lxc and just x vCores (no cpu models).
It is my understanding that a couple of months ago, along with the Epyc upgrade, they announced that the "vps" now will also be moved to Epyc and KVM, eventually doing away with the differentiation all together. If I was to buy during BF, I'd get a vps, if still available. Why? Still cheaper, more vCores and will be KVM now as well as eventually will all be moved to Epyc anyway
What's more, Rootserver seemed like it would "lock" you to a specific cpu model, while lxc/vps nodes, due to having no specified cpu, were the first to be upgraded. If we're looking at lifetime vps, I think it's better to opt for no specific cpu to get upgrades faster as I can imagine Rootservers will be kept on old systems longer. Just a guess, though.
They've been around since 2010. Don't see them going anywhere anytime soon. Discord community of them is also very active. Total assets 2023 were around 5 million euros according to Northdata.

What you say is probably true. Better to stick to vps.

But yeah, might get one in a couple of years if ZAP is still alive and kicking (don't really see why they won't; seems like it's going great for them with new features and stuff being released frequently).
Yes, I am very tempted to get one on sale in BF but it is a substantial amount of money to put into gambling. (Because, after all, this is in best case scenario, for the lifetime of the company.)
Granted, they've been around for a while, but so was CloudAtCost and we all know what happened. Maybe not a fair comparison because the latter was a complete disaster and their credibility was next to zero (they were a joke) - but ZAP may as well change their terms from night to morning and determine your server is no longer a one-time fee and instead ask you for a monthly maintenance fee to keep your server.
In case they were to say the one-time product would suddenly incurr a subscription, I will happily make use of my legal insurance for once. Might as well use it, if needed.
I went ahead and asked them to clarify their stance on lifetime servers. I insisted on asking about the ownership structure. They basically told me that I am granted "exclusive usage rights for as long as we provide the service and the Lifetime product line exists". No ownership rights are transferred nor it is a lease to own scheme.
This wording seemed fishy so I asked again to clarify what "as long as we provide the service and the Lifetime product line exists" means:
Currently, there are no terms that would allow us to simply discontinue the Lifetime product line and remove your server. [...] Your rights are protected under the terms you agreed to at the time of purchase.
Which is not that much different from the "trust me, bro" that I mentioned a few comments ago.
As long as you log in every three months, you are good to go. For as long as the company survives.
They have also released Epyc [lifetime] servers, btw
Imagine spending 19k I must resist...

Thanks for asking, but I figured this would be a generic answer. Anyway, I feel somewhat positive that they'll continue their lifetime line, so not too worried. If it comes to that, I'll probably at least attempt legal steps via European Small Claims court (kinda easy procedure and fixed response times). How many dedis have you got with them now, anyway?
