Replacement strategies / expectations for dedis
Hi all,
I have a dedi that is reporting a failing disk, or actually, it is reporting that THE disk is failing.
How is a dying disk generally handled in such cases? It is, of course, a low-end dedi. Seeing current storage prices, I worry it may be taken as a reason to decommission the server. Is that a realistic scenario for a smaller, but legit provider?
I'm quite happy with the little server at the current price, and would hate to see it dying or going up in price.
I'd like to get a bit street wise before contacting them about the issue.
What are my options and perhaps opportunities?

Backups, Backups, Backups. In my experience I was able to send the logs to the provider and they added the new drive and even cloned it over for me.
Mileage will very but reach out to your provider.

Hahaha (pardon my French),
I contemplated mentioning I had backups, but thought it off-topic
I'll open a ticket with them.
Thanks for the quick advice!
They're already replacing it!
(It may already have been done, had I reacted to their reply sooner)
Yea, that's usually how it goes. Failing hardware gets replaced. In my case, a failed RAM got me a full upgrade to a newer dedi at no additional cost with one of my providers. Their way of saying sorry that I'll have to setup everything again on a new server.
So keep backups and the process to setup your dedi handy in case of such failures and ping the support team ASAP when a failure is noticed.
If you want information, feign ignorance reply with the wrong answer. Internet people will correct you ASAP!
It’s OK if you disagree with me. I can’t force you to be right!
Glad to hear it was a great experience.

In my case, I had a cheap server and a disk started failing. Hivelocity refused to replace the drive unless I paid more. This was years ago.
If possible, could you please tell me the name of this supplier? Thanks.
Yes, that incremental process got buried partly in the back of my mind, somewhere in scattered text files, a few bookmarks and notes on Nextcloud.
Yeah, it was. From their notice 'We'll pull the disk to test' to the update 'SSD replaced, please reload the OS' was less than 15 minutes.
The least I could do for them, shoutout to nocix.net !
