Better alternative to RDP?

iandkiandk Hosting ProviderOG

Hi,

Is there a stable solution to access a remote server running a GUI?
I've tried RDP but the performance is awful.

I'm running a remote terminal server with Ubuntu + GUI and I'd like to a access it from my mac.

Home internet: 300Mbit/s down, 20Mbit/s up
The latency to my server is around 15-20ms.

Thanks!

  • If you're just using Linux, a remote console is usually all you need unless you're needing a GUI for everything. I usually tunnel Xvnc through ssh when I need it. So far that has been twice in 14 or so years.

Sorry, I forgot to mention, I'm running Windows Server as well.

  • Nothing's usually going to be faster than native RDP. Try using xfreerdp to connect and make sure you have your server settings to disable the pictures in the background, animations, etc.

mhh, RDP doesn't even work properly when I try to connect from my Mac to my PC.
Both are connected via Gbit directly to the switch.

  • Well then the problem isn't network related.

I tried connecting via SPICE to the ubuntu VM, the performance is pretty good, but unfortunately the macOS client doesn't work.
So I could only use it with windows

I really like Apache Guacamole, which is browser (HTML5)-based instead of needing a client installed. I have a couple local Windows VMs that I use as remote desktop and other stuff. Guac still uses RDP to access the Windows boxes, but acts as the middleman. I run the Guacamole web interface on a home web server, which allows me to access the Windows VMs through the browser from anywhere externally without exposing RDP itself on the windows machines. Guac has a a slew of options for authentication (LDAP, user/pass, radius, duo 2fa, etc.).

On a recent LinusTechTips video they had a very very similar scenario (good/high speed internet + low latency to their machines), and came around to using https://parsecgaming.com/

haven't used it myself yet, but it looks really smooth on his editing / gaming demos.

    Oh awesome suggestion, thanks!
Unfortunately their clients fails to open under linux and macos.

NoMachine is great. From my experience, it's often faster than RDP - at least when you've got enough bandwidth and low latency.

  • And of course, you can use a third party solution. Teamviewer is an expensive crap these days, I would recommend anydesk with e whitelisting devices for more security.

    • If a program actually fits in memory and has enough disk space, it is guaranteed to crash.
    • If such a program has not crashed yet, it is waiting for a critical moment before it crashes.

    Seems interesting.

I think what would help 10x is if you expand on that a lot, what exactly is performing badly and what are the specs of the windows server.

10/10 would replace RDP with this.
