LES CyberMonday perfect idling box

LES didn't have a special event for Black Friday, and I thought it's a shame that we are not having some fun, so I am proposing that as a community, we do something fun for CyberMonday!

Everyone is entitled to design their perfect idling boxes that he wishes to buy during CyberMonday. List the specs and what price you are willing to pay for each box (bonus: give it a fun name).

Providers can look at the list and decide if they want to grant the wish. It's a win-win for everybody: customers get a shot at customising what they really want and providers can meet that need with a surprise offer on CyberMonday!

If you think this is a fun idea, just post the write-up of your dream idling box!

Note: Don't be too greedy! If you want it to happen, make sure that you ask for something that the providers can reasonably deliver. :)

What's that phrase, "the devil makes work for idle VMs"

2vcpu (20%), NVme, gigabit link, say 2 ram and a newish ubuntu image

Big fan of boxes that I can rebuild fast more than idle tbh.

(That def totally doesn't have anything to do with my go to troubleshooting strategy being nuke it from orbit)

  • Wow, this is a really interesting idea! Let's design some fancy box :)

    1vCPU
    64MB RAM
    1GB SSD or NVME
    10TB bandwidth or 100Mbps unmetered
    KVM
    1 ipv4 + /64 ipv6
    $2 - $5 annually (the lower the better ;)
    Name: Homunculus

If ipv4 is too hard under such budget, plz try nat ipv4 + /64 ipv6

    some explain from wikipedia:

A homunculus is a representation of a small human being. Popularized in sixteenth-century alchemy and nineteenth-century fiction, it has historically referred to the creation of a miniature, fully formed human. The concept has roots in preformationism as well as earlier folklore and alchemic traditions.

  • Here's mine:
    EU Region
    1-2vCPU
    2GB RAM
    100-200GB HDD
    1TB Bandwidth
    1IPV4
Price: Gimme some sexy annual deal.
    Name: The old standard

    DOS = HIGH?!?
I knew it was on something!

  • Take an old server box, stuff in 10TB+ of plain spinning disks, hook it up to a gigabit line, then give me a call.

  • The Inception Hosting €15/y box is a good choice.

  • I'm aiming for two different things. One is a failover server where I can easily spin up containers (so idle most of the time), and the other is a light-weight front-end for heavy DBs.

    1vCPU (not that important)
    4GB RAM
15GB HDD (SSD not so important)
    500GB bandwidth
    KVM
    Location: flexible
$30/yr or €30/yr-ish type of range

    1vCPU (not that important)
    512MB RAM
5GB SSD (HDD probably OK too)
250GB bandwidth (less probably OK, more interested in good speed to the back-end)
    KVM/OpenVZ
    Location: NL/DE + UK + Dallas + Los Angeles
$5-10/yr range depending if KVM or OpenVZ.
(In fact, if Alpha VPS re-stock their €5/yr special I'd take that for DE + UK, although I'd rather pay a little extra and get KVM.)

  • Let's be honest. Any box is an ideal idling box.

Somewhere in the range of 2 cores, 20GB storage, 2GB RAM. Preferably in NL/UK/FR. My real cyber Monday wish.

Pardon me sir but do you have a moment to hear about @liteserver ...? :scream:

May be a bit pricey for idling (discounted to €6/m for BF/CM) with 8 TB monthly traffic ...

Let's call it the LS NL NomNomNom PremIdler

    Aka NVME-2G

    - 2 CPU Cores
    - 2 GB RAM
    - 30 GB NVMe SSD Storage
    - 8 TB bandwidth / month

And might also keep an eye on HostDoc and Inception for possible deals in the UK

    Happy hunting!
