I just nabbed one. I don't need it, but figure I'll announce some V6 there for shits-n-gigs since it's BGP enabled and use it as an African continent website mirror since they're currently being routed to Singapore or Netherlands.

It might end up being worse than NL, honestly.
At least from my node in South Africa, it seems to go through London regardless, before looping back to Nigeria - See: https://dnstools.ws/traceroute/195.16.73.10/?workers=za

I'm not sure if that also affects other countries in the region though, or just happens to be how it is between Nigeria and South Africa (or that specific provider in ZA for that matter), though I remember someone mentioning the routes on LET as well.

Of course, I'm hoping that improves in the near-ish future. Nigeria is a pretty exotic location after all (and Terrahost is a solid provider).

We are definitely looking to improve this, but we need to start somewhere :) Our plan is to connect to more IXes in the region, and taking more diverse transit that should help alot!

Good to see that. The VPS isn't for anything mission critical, mainly just playing around. Just waiting for BGP to be enabled for it now. Network speeds are actually pretty decent.

By the looks of it, the network in Nigeria is single homed behind Hurricane Electric. That's not a problem when starting up, but it creates a higher RTT in this case when connecting to other African countries.

That being said, a major problem is that the well connected African countries, are usually well connected to other continents. Nigeria and South Africa are well connected to London (and SA also to Asia). Morroco is connected to Spain, etcetera. Of course there are cables running between the different African countries, but the capacitiy is much less than submarine cables, so sending traffic through them is much more expensive.

Lastly, if your target audience in Africa is South Africa, Nigeria is never going to be the perfect POP for you. It's about 4500 kilometers/3000 miles away. That's the same as creating a European POP in NYC. If your target audience is in SA, choose a provider in SA.

Many people from SA are currently hosting content in the UK, as the local hosted SA prices are rather high.
