Nothing's usually going to be faster than native RDP. Try using xfreerdp to connect and make sure you have your server settings to disable the pictures in the background, animations, etc.

If you're just using Linux, a remote console is usually all you need unless you're needing a GUI for everything. I usually tunnel Xvnc through ssh when I need it. So far that has been twice in 14 or so years.
