I gave Hetzner a try - so far it's the best experience (but I've compared it to the free offers of other companies, so that should be taken with a bucket of salt).

I can't speak from personal experience, but in terms of pricing (per GB), Hetzner is clearly the best deal

Fair to note that TAB.DIGITAL 8 GB free tier works very well for Contacts, Calendars, Tasks, and even file sharing.

Do they throw many ads at the user in the web interface?

"A single swap file or partition may be up to 128 MB in size. [...] [I]f you need 256 MB of swap, you can create two 128-MB swap partitions." (M. Welsh & L. Kaufman, Running Linux, 2e, 1996, p. 49)

I haven't seen any - with adblocker disabled and all.

Could be my Serbian IP though - no one likes us, not even the advertisers LOL. :)

Pivoted to the managed solution and very happy for now. Chose Hetzner managed Nextcloud ("Storage Share"). Details:

I have recently started using the Deck Nextcloud app for organizing my bike repair work and scheduling. Looks promising. Rough notes:

  • If you are only using it for contacts and calendar sync (CardDAV/CalDAV), Nextcloud is a massive overkill. It's like buying a school bus just to commute to work alone.

You might want to look into Baïkal or Radicale. They are incredibly lightweight, use a fraction of the resources, and run absolutely perfectly on shared hosting without throwing a dozen PHP warnings.

Totally agree with you on the file storage part though. Hetzner Storage Boxes are unbeatable for that.

    That was my reasoning. However:

I have - you can see my linked article(s) for details.
Nextcloud seems like the most stable solution for keeping contacts working accross platforms and devices (source of truth).
Also, in the post above, I mentioned the use of Nextcloud Deck, so I am no longer using just contacts and calendar (Deck integrates with Tasks, pretty neat).

Yup - very happy so far.

  • Btw https://tierhive.com/ have Nextcloud recipe and you can offload database... So maybe is a good option too
