VDS hosts (Actual VDS not VPS with freindly FUP) ?? or stupidly cheap dedi's ?? Suggestions? Offers?

I want to add a few test locations to TierHive at some point, possibly as a free/trial tier. I will need to make them public to see real word data, I don't want to mess with dedis for this, and I also dont want to piss off good fellow VPS hosts with heavy CPU Use (we hate that)

But actually finding a VDS is not so simple, I have never heard of half the ones I find and the ones I do are so expensive I might as well get a dedi.

Looking for something with minimum specs (higher is better), like:

  • 2+ cores (need to be able to actually run at 100% for extended periods)
  • 8GB Ram (not contested or very low contention)
  • 100GB NVMe (must be pre-allocated, can be iops capped)
  • Even 100 Mbps is fine
  • 1 IPv4
  • IPv6 not required.
  • basically, if I use it to 100% 24x7 i dont want to hear from you (not that this is the plan)

No specific price in mind, or if I am missing somewhere that has ultra cheap dedi's (apart from online.net/kimsufi/ovh/hetzner/webtropia/worldstream), I am all ears

I love the super cheap NAT vps approach with hourly billing :)
Have you thought about a (bigger) investment in a lifetime ZAP Hosting Dedicated Server? Could be worth a thought

I still think VDS is just marketing bullshit. It's inherently a shared environment, and honestly no company selling VDS is going through the hassle of pinning CPU cores/threads, restricting/slicing storage resources, unless it's a high cost VDS that nobody wants (as you said.) Budget VDS aren't worth the hassle compared to standard VPS that work fine most of the time.

  • Vultr in mind ? Also like said in discord . Advin or SGraf could have some interesting options as well

Yeah, it kind of, I agree, but it works both ways, you can't market it as a VDS then get annoyed at me if I smash all the cores for 4 hours. you pay extra not to deal with a FUP. and that has advantages, if you have any offers I am all ears :D i know you have been around and relaiable for a long ass time so I would trust you to at least say... dude... i throttled you instead of "FUCK OFF I dont want you as a customer"

  • Netcup do VDS (aka root-servers) in US, Germany, Austria and Singapore and they are a solid provider.
Not sure if it's on your price range.

I have to admit, ever since you got the new username, the name AnthonySmith doesn't come to mind that automatically anymore (blame me getting towards 30 years old, I guess). I knew you were Anth somewhere in my head though. I was reminded of that a couple of days ago, when I read the ORL thread where you explained your new username. That said, I completely missed the launch of your new Hosting service lol. Life's been busy, I'm gonna take my final exams in March.

I thought I must have annoyed you or something, I sent you a message ages ago and on steam on got no reply haha.

No man, all good. Sorry about that. I probably just opened the message, then did smth else, and forgot to reply. I still love you <3 Feel free to msg again :D

Isn't that what they usually call "pinned cores"?

I.e. no other process (even the OS and hypervisor, IIRC) can utilize those. You also get the same cores each time the server restarts.

I could offer you the following plan that is "semi-dedicated"

    KVM Standard M
    AMD EPYC Milan (2 vCPU)
    16GB DDR4 ECC Memory
    128GB NVMe SSD Storage
    32TB Bandwidth (10 Gbps)
    Located in Kansas City, MO
    $8/month

If you are interested, just PM me and I can provide you with an order link.

The reason why I say "semi-dedicated" is because you can use the CPU 24x7 without issue. However, your VM will be on a hypervisor with shared CPU servers, and there is still a small % chance of CPU steal under peak loads if our monitoring system does not kick in quick enough to keep the other VMs in check.

Yeah but you can also pin multiple virtual servers to the same cores :)

I really appreciate that but I would feel rude only paying $8 for that.

  • Checkout @bingobangobongo HostBilby, they have VDS plans where you are allocated the cores.

You can also checkout layer7.net , greencloud , hostbrr
They have some value for money VDS plans, but those are not dedicated cores, but you can use the vCPUs 100%
