Request for a Small VPS for Learning Linux & Lightweight Desktop Use
Hi everyone,
My name is Naeem, and I’m looking for a small VPS to help me continue learning Linux and experimenting with lightweight desktop environments like Lubuntu and LXQt. This is purely for personal learning — I’m not running anything commercial or heavy.
I don’t need high specs. Even something like:
1 vCPU
512MB–1GB RAM
A few GB of storage
IPv6 or NAT IPv4
…would be more than enough for what I want to do.
My goals are to:
Practice system administration
Set up a minimal Lubuntu/LXQt environment with XRDP or VNC
Learn more about networking, SSH, and remote management
Explore lightweight Linux workflows
I’ll follow all community rules, keep resource usage low, and avoid anything that could cause issues (no mining, no bots, no spam). I just want a stable place to learn and grow my skills.
If anyone has a spare VPS slot or knows of an opportunity within the community, I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks for taking the time to read my request.
— Naeem

Why do you need VPS for this? Do you have a computer you can run virtualbox?

Thanks for the question!
I do have a laptop, but it’s an older Toshiba Satellite with limited resources. Running VirtualBox with a desktop environment on top of Windows slows everything down a lot, even after upgrading the RAM.
A small VPS lets me practice Linux administration in a more stable environment, without my local hardware bottlenecks. I also want to learn remote access tools like SSH, XRDP, and VNC in a real server setup, which is harder to simulate properly on my machine.
I’m not running anything heavy — just trying to build my skills in a clean, consistent environment.
You can always try the Oracle Cloud Free tier.
Not sure if will have available resources on your region, but when you set up and change to Pay As You Go you still can use the always free resources.
Just pay attention on the instance shape to get the right one, and set up budgets to stop everything if there is a cost involved.
Not safe for 24/7 production environments (the always free can be decommissioned at any time, but usually they don't do that for those on PAYG)
The river runs towards the sea, but the sea is never full...
oracle cloud free tier or picking up any laptop with 4gb of ram and a semi modern x86-64 cpu on marketplace and installing ubuntu on it (to learn). Lets you debug issues in person too, highly recommend the laptop solution.ww
Use Linux. Why you need windows on old hw ? Just install lubuntu/LXQt and work from it. I can advise you to try also LinuxLite or Peppermint OS
Getting VM with 512-1GB for vnc will be slower than running on your old hw
ServerStatus , slackvpn , linux mirrors
