mailbox.org price hike

On mailbox.org there was announced a price hike from 15. july for new users and for actual members 1st september. This changes as follow

Standard account €3/m
Premium account €9/m
This 2 plans getting doubke storage

Light stays at €1/m

Who still was on light can get standard or premium for the old price if change before end of august.

A bit more detailed: the price hike is actually only removed discount for the yearly payment (e.g., the Standard account is now €36/year instead of €30/year), while the monthly €3/m price remains the same.
Until the end of this month, you can extend your account as far into the future as you want at the old yearly price. I'm good for the next 5 years.

With the mail/cloud storage quota doubled, it's not that bad at all. In fact, I feel like this price hike with doubled storage quota has made their offer more attractive than before.

I don't think they compete in the same email service segment. Mailbox.org is a heavily privacy-oriented provider with complete productivity suite that competes directly with Proton and Tuta.
Besides that, it seems you didn't read beyond the thread title. :P

Admittedly, I am not familiar with the features of this provider, I do recall looking at them for email services a while back, but I didn't see the office suite stuff.

I did read your prior comment, anytime prices increase, seems like some people look for alternatives, even if the price increase is justified. But I agree they are not a 1-to-1 comparison.

I am not the biggest fan of Mailbox. Used it for a while. Would rather give Posteo a try, over Mailbox.

Have been very happy with Mythic Beasts, though.

This is the exact reasons why other providers will get a couple of new customers.

As soon as there is this title, "price hike", some people panic and move.
Not cause they actually have to, instead they move because they don't understand what it really means for them.

I don't think people are generally keen to switch their main mail provider unless it's really necessary. Especially if they don't use their own domain, which I believe is the vast majority of population if we look beyond the LES community niche.

Moving mail with your own domain, especially if it's just one domain, is trivial. But moving everything tied to a hosting domain (@gmail.com, @mailbox.org, and so on), with all the services, subscriptions, purchased play store items, etc. that have piled up over the years or decades, is painful.
Or the opposite - it's also annoying to move the 20+ domains (setting up all the DNS records ... MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, filters, redirections to own folder, etc... for every one of them) I have in my mailbox.org account.

Then you read beyond the thread title and think what to do. :P
Anyway, when I got their email about the price hike, it didn't even feel like a price hike to me, for the reasons stated above. Now it's even better value for money to me.

History tells me a different story

I'm with you on this, all the way. I stay with some providers, just because it works and I pay for a stable infrastructure and peace of mind.

But there is people who doesn't calculate with the time it takes to move everything to a different provide if they feel mistreated in any way.

Mail, using a common/joint domainname, as you mention is probably less likely.
But if you have your own domain, or if its a VPS provider...... Things get rolling fast in the low end world.
