cPanel Alternatives 2026/2027

If I recall correctly, reviving old topics aren't too popular, and I was thinking it would be nice with some updated inputs on which control panels should be considered in 2026/2026.
(The previous thread is from 2023 ...)

Personally I've been using ApisCP by @nem (great panel, IMO!) and I just installed the free version of @aaPanel, looks good, but I still haven't gotten to use it much yet. Hopefully will soon. :)

As a reseller I have used both cPanel and DirectAdmin, and I actually prefer DA, especially with the extras (JetBackup, PHP version selector, WP admin, Softaculous etc). But according to @jarland and others, updates, upgrades and more is built on not the best code. (As a reseller there's been some issues, services not enabled/started after upgrades etc. And the SSL certs lately, what a mess.)

But there's quite a few alternatives. Like SPanel (used by @MikeA ?), HestiaCP and others?

(And also various vibe coded alternatives these days.)

Which other panels should be considered now, and why/for whom or what?
(I mostly use it for managing client web sites, prefer to keep email separate.)

If you want the best direct competitor, then the answer there is DirectAdmin. It's not a modern control panel, but it's cheap and has all of the functionality that cPanel has.

Enhance.com is a more modern alternative, it doesn't have all of the functionality of cPanel/DirectAdmin but it has pretty much everything you need to manage a website. I can't really comment on other panels just because I haven't really experimented with them or used them in depth.

  • Last time I used it, Keyhelp was pretty slick and cool. Might wanna look into that.

Heavily depends on your use case, so exactly the why that you rightfully mentioned.

If you use the wrong tool for a job and get a bad result it is easy to blame the tool but often enough thats just wrong.

That said I am still using Hestia or meanwhile my own fork.
However I wouldn't put that in the same box like cpanel or direct admin...

I like SPanel as it is, and don't regret at all switching to it from cPanel many years ago, but it has some flaws which are annoying in some cases. SPanel can't be installed yourself, it's done by their team, and they always will have access since they push software/stack updates. Things are locked down just like cPanel (though they can't be compared, since WebPros[cPanel] is dogshit). Though honestly SPanel is great for people who want a managed service, since they update it and offer affordable managed service with the license as an option. I haven't tried the reseller feature in SPanel, last I checked it wasn't fully implemented but did work - but basically didn't have proper API functionality if you wanted to sell reseller accounts. And I personally hate dealing with reseller so I'll probably never do it anyway..

I think Enhance is the best option now days that's best for security as well, but also, everything cost money. Enhance is per account billing just like cPanel, Spanel, etc.

For personal use I love DirectAdmin, but I know some people don't like it for a multi-client environment (like offering web hosting).

Tbh there's no perfect option. Everything has its flaws. And everything that's considered "good" usually cost money, and if you grow with it, it'll end up eating you. If not now, in the future when the company does price increases.

I think KTS24 / @RapToN use KeyHelp. Maybe I should try it out there. :)
Not sure if I ever tried HestiaCP. I think I tried VestaCP at some point.
    I guess I should check out Enhance.com, though. :)

Thanks for giving aaPanel a try! After you’ve had some time to explore it, I’d love to hear what you find intuitive or convenient. Also, please let me know what you feel might be missing—especially when it comes to managing client websites—compared to platforms like cPanel or DA. We truly value user feedback!
If you come across anything that’s confusing, or if a feature doesn’t behave as you expected, please let us know right here. We’re always eager to hear your suggestions and honest feedback!

  • Thanks for your opinion on @aaPanel. Since cPanel and DA started charging abruptly, hosting providers started looking for other alternatives. I am sure a few new control panels will definitely do the good job and give web hosting businesses what they require in affordable prices.

I think this is very naive to expect. It could be said to have been proven wrong, because this story has been repeated since the first price hike in 2019 or so - and we still have alternatives that are mediocre at best (DA).

Cpanel itself started getting shittier since it got corporate owned.

We have bad to OK-ish at best options now, and I expect it will get slightly worse over time.

Get in touch with me, and I'll be happy to give you some credit so you can try out our Keyhelp web hosting. I wouldn't be disappointed if, after the trial, you decided to switch to your own Keyhelp instance or another provider.

sadly I am not a provider tag on this forums, but please let you know I have something a bit different: slime.okane.id. It doesn’t follow a monolithic concept; instead, it’s modular. You can install and run multiple web servers simultaneously per domains. It also supports the installation of various types of database servers, allowing for the use of multiple versions at the same time. It was designed from the ground up to support multi-tier accounts (users, resellers, and master resellers) as well as multi-cluster setups. The panel supports IPv4, IPv6-only, and NAT-based servers (for clusters). Furthermore, the panel can be installed on a wide variety, including various Linux and BSD distributions. It's success installed on openSUSE MicroOS and NixOS, OS with immutable/atomic OS consept.

user not only can hosted PHP, NodeJS, Perl or Rust, It's support any programming languages, runtimes and binaries can running on their shell including Basic, Fortran, Pascal, LISP, Go, Bun, Deno, Dart, Rux, C, .NET and NASM. each users running on shell with Alpine Linux OS except on FreeBSD using Jail, resource limitting with cGroups 1 and 2, quotas, tc, LVE (if running top of CloudLinux).

If you’re interested in giving it a try, it’s not limited to deploy web hosting; it can also can Tor network (including .onion domain generate), also can deploy VPS based on Dockerizer containers, Containers in general, and KVM-based VPS.

  • Since you manage client sites and keep email separate, I’d compare panels on four things rather than features: how users are isolated from each other (cgroups/containers vs plain Unix users), whether backup and restore are built in and tested, whether there’s an API for provisioning, and how licensing scales with account count.
From the replies so far, Enhance and KeyHelp look like the ones worth a trial for multi-client hosting, while HestiaCP tends to fit single-owner servers better than reseller setups. A short trial on a throwaway VPS with a real site migrated in will tell you more than any feature table.

A few free ones nobody's mentioned yet: Virtualmin (GPL, mature, handles multiple client accounts and resellers properly, a bit dated UI but very solid), CloudPanel (free, fast, very PHP/Node-focused, good if it's mostly WordPress sites and email lives elsewhere, which fits your setup), and Froxlor (lightweight, multi-customer, been around forever). And one to avoid: CWP. There's a thread in the Security section right now about trojanized CWP installs being used for backdoors.

  • Are you asking as an end-user or as a reseller? I can't comment on the latter because I just don't understand the market for such panels as an end-user (and I thought the margins were too low to bother with).

As an end-user I think most panels have lost what little utility they had when docker came out. PHP version selector? What the fdisk is even that? I can deploy a container with whatever version of PHP I want. I can deploy 800 containers with each version of PHP ever released.
