Gmail was down in Hong Kong for a split second as far as I could see. No big deal.

Apparently (not seen it confirmed) it was due to their auth system breaking. YouTube worked OK if you were logged out. Anything requiring auth stopped working.
In my experience, even cached pages still put a burden in the server. The burden in the server instantly going away when I put static index.html pages on the server instead of the index.php of the wordpress.
