Investigating the cause of latency differences

@MikeA said: I randomly checked latency to your LG compared to OVH stuff in Sydney and lord, 180ms (FlowVPS) vs 260ms (OVH) from central U.S. That's pretty nice.

How would one investigate and determine the cause of latency differences like this? Thanks!

I hope everyone gets the servers they want!

  • Just contact OVH support and provide them with some traceroutes. They'll fix it.
    You can't do anything.

So I asked Google how to investigate the cause of latency in networks. The featured search result was https://www.inap.com/blog/troubleshooting-network-latency/

@MikeA Do you feel like rechecking the pings to see if the difference still remains? Want to put up some traceroutes? If not, that's fine. I just thought the big difference was interesting, and I wondered why the difference was happening.

I hope everyone gets the servers they want!

Can you fix Geographical differences? No. But peering ? Yes.

Trace route will show you the path it takes to reach your server.

Some companies spends crap tons of $$ in hardware's, some focuses on network, very few does both and many average end users don't really care.

I remember seeing a trace to SG, where the traffic routes through LA before reaching SG.

Run an mtr both ways, submit on the forum and you should get some assistance :-)

My original post in this thread was unclear. Instead of asking about a performance problem that I am experiencing, I am hoping for more information about an interesting comment @MikeA made in another thread. @MikeA posted about latency differences between his location in central US and two other locations close together in Australia:

    https://talk.lowendspirit.com/discussion/comment/17481/#Comment_17481

I'm wondering what caused the big difference @MikeA observed.

I hope everyone gets the servers they want!

It is pointless to test, my comment was regarding how OVH latency from US>AU was much higher. There's no way around that, it's just OVH, just like how their US locations still have poor routing to some states.

@MikeA Thanks for your interesting comment!

Today, from Sonora, MX, I seem to be seeing latency of about 209 ms (OVH SYD) versus about 160 ms (flowvps).

It's fun that the ping time from flovps seems to be about 268 ms versus about 160 ms to flowvps and 209 ms to OVH SYD. I didn't seem to find an easy way to get a ping from OVH SYD.
