HOST-C General Downtime 21-SEPT-2024

Hy Guys,
I do not intend to use this forum as a ticket system, but since we are light on KYC, I wish to inform all customers on the General Downtime we will do.
If admins/mods think this is not the place to post this, feel free to delete the tread. ![]()
Thanks to your continued support, we’ve outgrown our current rack and have successfully secured two adjacent units in the data center. Unfortunately, this expansion requires us to schedule a period of general downtime. While we’d prefer not to take this route, we have no other choice, as a live migration would take weeks and severely impact performance for everyone.
We’ve been granted access to the data center on 21-SEPT-2024 to move all servers, routers, and switches.
We expect the process to take 4 to 6 hours, during which all HOST-C services will be offline.
Once the devices are set up in the new racks, we will immediately start restoring services.
General downtime is scheduled to begin on 21-SEPT-2024 at 08:00 AM Bucharest Time.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

Very professional to announce it 10 days before!
Congrats for the expansion (but not surprising considering your prices and professionality).

Hmmmmmmm, does it.....................
Let me study this for a sec..........
Until then, we appreciate the patience you all had with us today.
The upgrade and migration went flawless, until shit hit the fan.
The Fabric Extender refused to communicate with the Nexus N9K we had there, so we had to take the whole RJ45 networking appart and put back the Catalyst Switch we had. This costed us little over 1our.
Downtime was 5h to 8h for some, not proud of the later number.
Also, customers that had services on Xeon Gold 6138 (2.0 GHz ) got a free upgrade to Xeon Gold 6148 ( 2.4 GHz )
Xeon 6130 ( 2.1 GHz ) will follow later the next week for the Xeon Gold 6148 Upgrade.
Xeon V4 2680 and 2660 got free upgrade to E5-2687W v4 ( 3.0 Ghz ) ( almost all nodes, 2 remained, but those will be decommissioned soon.
We swapped out some Consumer NVME's we had and replaced it with Dell PM1725. ( I promise you, I/we will not touch another consumer NVME in PRD again, they can have the 5G/sec speed, but they wear out in 3-6 mo )
I will post pics as promised but we still have a few tickets to reply to, until then...

Hmmm, wished for a 850-900 Single Score on this, but hey, the node is pretty bashed to the wall for the moment.
At 6 cores it does scale better then a V4.
We will see what the users say, AVX-512 extensions and the increased memory Bandwidth should translate to better overall performance compared to a V4.
THX for the test!

As promised, here are some details on the move.
We started out with this:

and we had to go to here:

during this time we also decided to upgrade a few stuff:

As usually, we are very organized

by the 7th hour things started to look a little better:

And in the end, we ended up like this.

@host_c gpt email about cpu upgrade, if you could share yabs it would be more helpful for people to decide
Want free vps ? https://microlxc.net
Don't expect miracles purely CPU-wise, a few percents maybe. The benefit might come from the greater memory bandwidth and new cpu instructions... if your software make use of it.
Happy customer at AlexHost, AxusHost, Bakker-IT, Host-C, Ionos, Veesp + NanoKVM ftw.
True, so here it is:
From @mikewazar
Xeon Gold 6148 @ 2.4 GHz
Xeon E5-2687W V4 @ 3.0 GHz
Xeon CPU E5-2690 v4 @ 2.60GHz
So higher CPU Clock beats Newer Gen with lower CPU Clock in Synthetic Benchmark.
Synthetic tests show only one part of the a performance aspect. The newer the CPU, the newer the Chipset, more modern storage controllers, lower latencies, and so on.
Even if each of those brings 1%, all added up the final product should be better.
Now, if I run something that will make no use of the newer features, then yes, an upgrade like this makes no sense.
For me personally, when I moved my PLEX server from Xeon E5-2687W V4 @ 3.0 GHz to a Xeon Gold 6130 @ 2.1 GHz I saw better performance trans-coding 4K and the over-all VPS worked much faster. SQL Database on the other hand was slower due to the lower CPU Clock.
The two Xeon V4 yabs test I used:
YABS - Xeon E5-2687W V4 @ 3.0 GHz
YABS - Xeon CPU E5-2690 v4 @ 2.60GHz
