  • Lots of control panels offer SLL certs for free. Why would I need this?

If you don't know why you would need a ssl cert that is usually paid for, odds are you won't need it, and LE is enough for you.
Companies may require different kinds of ssl certs (for mostly security reasons) than you do. That doesn't mean that probably 90% of LES users are probably fine rolling a LE cert offered by the hosting panel their provider offers.

If their clock is off by so much, I wonder if any browser accepts their certificates

The issued certificates are chained to Sectigo's root certificates.

Likely free. But at first this website needs to survive for a year...

Generally, CAs won't revoke certificates simply because a reseller goes out of business.
Anyway, this is a free service—use it at your own risk.

  • Perhaps this is a way to acquire customers, similar to Linode.
