Looking for a stable YouTube alternative

bikegremlinbikegremlin ModeratorOGContent Writer

I've seen many platforms rise and fall.
Vimeo used to be fine, then they introduced high fees and very high limits on free tiers.

I'm looking for a free alternative to post my YouTube videos, as a sort of a backup in case YouTube has a problem (that would be in addition to offline backups, but I digress).

What would LESbians recommend?

A few of the platforms I've been looking into:
Dailymotion seems popular.
Rumble is advertising a lot but I'm not sure how long-term sustainable the platform is.

IMO, it all looks a lot like a half-baked solution compared to YouTube, but as a free alternative, it could be acceptable.

Almost forgot, if that's relevant: YouTube has strict policies (I'd call it censorship), and my videos are aligned with those (nothing controversial etc.). So, I would expect the other platforms to not have stricter (crazier) policies, and those should not be a problem.

Rumble seems fine. Or Bitchute or wait for BF and look up one of the deal aggregator sites for "Video Hosting". I got a couple of such deals that way- since it is backup to YT, even if one is gone, there is still the other.

Edit: Odysee is what I was also looking at when @lowendspiritxdax mentioned it below. Possible option

I fear they would ban me on that platform.
    It's just way different standards:
All the videos involving mechanics on Xvideos end a lot more happily than mine. :(

I gave it a go. From the time of testing:

    Pros:
    It is free.
It can automatically import YouTube videos.

    Cons:
    Quite slow & buggy.
Doesn't allow monetization for us in Serbia (don't like being discriminated).
Not sure about those other platforms' monetization - may be the same there too.

Rumble seems to be the clear #2 at the moment, and are quite well funded. They've been doing contracts and other exclusivity deals with big content creators. I'm also seeing more ads on videos/streams so it looks like their sales team is doing some work.

Odysee has also been around for years, but I find their UI to be super clunky.

    Same experience with Odysee.

    Rumble:
Yup. I found out about the platform when they emailed me, suggesting I start uploading my videos there, alongside YouTube (their policy doesn't prohibit hosting videos on both platforms). And I could exchange back-and-forth emails with a real, live person there (as opposed to YouTube for example).

Floatplane requires viewer to pay subscription.
    I don't like that.
Everything I make and publish should be available for free.
Patreon donations are more than welcome, but not required in order to see any article or video. I still remember the times when one dollar was an unachievable amount of wealth (or price to pay) for me. :)

    Edit:
Apparently, it doesn't cost to host videos there, but I'd prefer to find a free to watch alternative.

    I don't like that.

Thing is serving vast amounts of video b/w ain't cheap. So your options are either the google model (ads, tracking) or paid model.

There is no "other"...unless you count ones that are still bootstrapping or using venture cap money to subsidize it temporarily. Eventually those too will need to pick option 1 or option 2.

Lately I've much preferred to support places that are upfront about what the plan is to reach financial viability. Been burned too many times by "option" 3 and dislike the google model

    I understand.
From a low-income-friendly perspective, the Google model is better.

I don't mind posting on a third, paid only platform though. Not that any of such platforms seem interested into non-commercial stuff as far as I can see. Applied to the Floatplane (doesn't cost :) ), and previously uploaded a few videos to Rumble (works OK for now).

That cost money though. And not a low amount, if you accumulate a lot of videos over the years.

  • I'd recommend Peertube as well. Run it self hosted and let it sync your Youtube channel; you can replicate over multiple instances or have others federate your videos.

  • Something else, I don't know if your against self hosting, but I have used https://mediacms.io/ in the past for self hosting, and it is pretty powerful, much more so if your not going to encode your videos in anything outside of the uploaded "default". I say powerful as I ran this off of a 2 GB Linode for over a year without a lick of problems.
The only "problems" I ran into it was it is not very easy to theme, and can't really mod it to well to say add ads/banners such if you want to make some monies.
    Thanks
