  • From installing slackware with 3 1/2 disks with fvwm, gone through a LOT to finally settle on Kubuntu vanilla (or KDE Neon) for about 10 years now.

  • My goto is Ubuntu. Fallback is Centos. Have eyed Debian but never touched it.

Learning and getting comfortable with FreeBSD as I get time now, trying a few things out and troubleshooting. I hear BSD is the future and I have had my head in the dirt too long maybe.

  • tl;dr: A little bit of everything.

Daily driver at home: EndeavourOS w/ KDE Plasma unstable (bc I'm an unstable person so a rolling Arch-based distro with a sweet Calamares installer that's got a purple haze as its primary color theme, plus Konqi fits me perfectly).

Debian 12 testing on the majority of my LEStuff. SSH from home base's Yakuake so no DE needed. I'm very used to Granddad Debian. Rarely breaks. Testing is still pretty freakin' stable and feels like a rolling release since I kind of guess it is. Topgrade ftw on all these semi-idlers.

Just put Fedora Server 34 (GASP!) on a VPS I chose to kill because the storage bloated and I'm really not sure why nor do I care since backups were invented and used. Going through the process of getting 34 up to 41 (is that the current one?) on that one. The old adage about seven years of a dog's life equaling one year of a human's life is based on some longevity numbers somewhere but isn't carved into stone. Your mileage, the doggo's, and the human's may all vary, and probably will.

One dedi (or vdedi?) I'm renting runs Proxmox 8-whatever. Can't remember if that was an iso install on bare metal or on top of Debian. I'm still learning THAT. Proxmox backup server (and client) are INSANELY awesome stuff. Fast as a Cheetah.

One colo-to-own dedi also runs PVE and PBS on its bare metal.

The newest member to my computer family, a Dell Poweredge r710 heating up my computer room now (it's not THAT loud - fan noise is kind of like white noise), FINALLY just got AlmaLinux 9.5 with Gnome put on it with Ventoy helping get everything there. I'm so tempted to put Plasma on it but I have to keep reminding myself that I need to just slow down, soak in the fact that it's running an OS WITH internet connectivity (that's NOT Windows Server 2008 R2), and meditate on the Beastie Boys' wise words of wisdom to just let it flow, let myself go, slow and low, that is the tempo. :)

On all my PC's I use Arch, and kind of varies, I like KDE plasma, but I also use Hyprland on rare occasions. (I'd recommend KDE for the ease of use.)

Do you have problems with Arch's stability because it's a rolling release?

Well, actually, on my Laptop, none at all, even with an Nvidia GPU it works fine, on my Desktop, its a whole story, my Wayland is broken on my desktop, and it has been for a long time, and no update seems to fix it yet. So I use X11.

So moral of the story, if you're lucky you face less issues, if you're unlucky, you may face issues. But most of the time it works flawlessly.

If you're familiar with vim, then I guess it willl take less than 5 minutes to learn the basics of i3-wm.
Sadly i3-wm doesn't support wayland yet, while its counterpart sway has slight differences compared with i3-wm, which I find inconvenient.
