  • One more thing I forgot: if there’s a database, copying its data folder while it’s running often won’t start cleanly on restore. A proper dump (mysqldump / pg_dump) is the first thing I’d check in a test restore.

  • The test that matters most to me is restoring from a different machine. If the backups are encrypted and the key or passphrase only lives on the server that just died, the clean logs don't help much.
