(Quote) I don't pretend to understand the complications of accepting donations, but if there were a way to accept optional membership or service fees with something like Donorbox, I think many of us would be more than happy to contribute.
-
Are you not legally able to accept donations or are you choosing not to? If the former, what about changing legal ownership to an entity that can. If the latter, why?

(Quote) I like the member vouch approach. You could also make the good reputation on the forum requirement more explicit. Something like provider polls or domain auctions might work: Registered for at least 30 days with at least 25 non-spammy posts.

GitHub account created 4 days ago, 4 commits that create four files, LES account created today, and necros the wrong thread. So many red flags.

(Quote) I believe sheldonbrown.com was an example of an info site that bots scrape but no one visits.

(Quote) After getting rid of Runcloud, donations could probably cover the remaining yearly cost without resorting to ads. I'm not against ads, but it feels nicer without them. Or the costs could be reduced even further with a few provider sponsorshi…

Careful with Pico. This is at the top of their README: (Quote)

I used Wasabi for several years for backups but moved to B2 and storage VPSes. It worked well for the most part, but they had some issues with 500 errors on writes even after several retries. I also didn't like that they make you pay 90 days for all…

(Quote) If you didn't enjoy working on it and didn't learn anything, then it's rubbish. Yes, most work projects are rubbish :)

(Quote) Your projects aren't rubbish if you enjoy working on them and learned something while doing it.

I'm not in the target audience , but the design looks great and I like the domain. Hope it works out for you.

You may already be aware, but Nocix has dedis for $15/month that meet most of your specs. A regular SSD instead of NVMe and the CPUs are ancient, but you can burn them up 24/7 at 100%.

(Quote) NodeQuery was beautiful. I also miss NixStats

I got the 2 TB JumboDisk without realizing it was NAT (my fault for not reading closely). But now that it's up and running, it does feel reasonably snappy. It's a great price, I hope it continues to run well. :)

rclone compatibility makes a cloud storage far more useful. I have lifetime deals with both Filen and Koofr, but I use Koofr more because of rclone. I'd like to see cloud storage providers prioritize rclone, or even make substantial annual donations…

(Quote) I spent an hour exploring different cities on citywalki.com. That's a brilliant idea for a site, thanks for sharing!
-
Yeah, I'd probably just let it idle anyway.

After seeing this thread I tried to order with the promo code. It took longer than I'd like to admit before I figured out why they weren't working. I missed out on some sweet deals last year :'(

(Quote) Could you chat more about when chatting is appropriate?

(Quote) I bought the 100 GB lifetime plan almost 4 years ago and although I've barely used the service, they're still in business so I consider it a win. Hopefully they stay in business for both of our sakes :)

(Quote) The calm before the storm of deals :)

The end result looks great! I was a little surprised that it's over 7,000 (!) lines of code, but there are extensive comments, so those add up. Cool idea :)

(Quote) Surprised no one mentioned using Ansible...

(Quote) I tried looking at their history on the internet archive to find clear evidence, and it's excluded. Seems suspicious. (Image)

Thanks for the recap. I tried looking at the incident from April that you linked but it now returns a 404. That's not a good look for transparency. https://status.filen.io/incident/544157

(Quote) You can use RustDesk with their relay servers. Self-hosting your own relay servers is completely optional.

Thanks for the heads up!

(Quote) You were smart to get an account when you did. According to their docs, they no longer offer a free plan :/

(Quote) Agreed, each client machine has its own key pair and the private key never leaves that machine.

Looks like a decent server. How old are the hard drives? Any reasons for getting rid of it?

(Quote) On a previous renewal the invoice was higher than $7.99. I had to ask customer service about it and they apologized and lowered it. I've barely dealt with them other than that, so I can't say if it was intentional or not.
