Might as well buy a used micro form factor PC and ask someone to host for you... Better performance.

I "want" a cheap dedicated derver in US east coast to rent...

As for your suggestion, I think I am a bit beyond owning a micro PC and asking someone to host it... This is what I am hosting from my home...

Dual Intel Xeon CPU E5-2695 v4 (36 cores)
    128 GB DDR4 2400 mhz ECC RAM (8 lanes of 16GB)
    2 TB NVMe SSD
    2x 1TB Sata SSD
    8TB HDD (backup dumps)
    2.5Gbps down, 1Gbps up unmetered
    1 static IPv4
    /64 IPv6

And that's just 1 of my 2 Xeon servers at home (other one is solely used for backups)

So, ya, I dont "need" a dedicated server overseas. I "want" one...

Also it's good to have backups spread across different timezone, so in the unforeseen even of a fire, I wont lose all the data.

It’s OK if you disagree with me. I can’t force you to be right!
IPv4: 32 bits of stress. IPv6: 128 bits of... well, more stress... Have anyone seen my subnet?

  • Those cheap dedis though... So weak.

You gotta pay more to get what you host at home in a DC.

I just need those cheap dedis for their storage. Performance, well if it's not a years old atom cpu, it's good enough for me. Most of my servers are not to, well, serve people. A VPS would do just fine. I just like having control of the dedicated server as well.

@sh97 looks like i'll need to stick to known good hosts... But their prices are so cheap!

@arirang what is the network speed looking like on your dedicated server? Is it slow like ours or is it fine?

    I've not seen yours.

speed test below. It seems fine

My speed test is in the first post, and needless to say, it's not good...

Yours on the other hand looks great! Thanks to you, I know what I am getting this black friday

Hope they have offers on dedicated server this year as well!

Based on these observations, I dont think he is losing money, but might be closer to break-even or even a slight profit ;)

But break-even is not a sustainable business plan and doesn't factor in OPEX either... hopefully there's a growth plan behind it :)

Probably earn recognition, then move on to broader client base to earn back the money?

Ask him. Open a ticket. You never know if you don't ask about...

  • Backup your data !!!
last week I bought two Dedirock and few days after deployment they were shut down for no reason. I opened a ticket and they reactivated my VPS, but everything was gone. my data disappeared and the IP changed.
They gave no explanation, even after I asked.

The things I put on most servers, I have at least 2 backups in 2 different locations. I trust people with my data as much sheeps trust wolves with baby sheeps...
